How Do I Change Words in a Picture? A Complete Editing Guide

The method depends on whether the words are still a text layer or have been flattened into image pixels. In a layered Photoshop or GIMP file, select the existing text layer and edit it with the Type or Text tool. In a JPG, PNG, screenshot, or other flattened file, you cannot select the original letters as text; you must either extract them into a new editable layer or repair the background and place replacement type over it. Always preserve an untouched copy, and keep a layered working file when you may need to revise the wording again.

What kind of text is in your picture?

Before changing a single letter, identify how the image was built. Open the file in your editor and inspect the Layers panel. The distinction determines whether you can make a clean, direct edit or must reconstruct part of the design.

Live text on a layer

A live type layer stores characters, formatting and position separately from the background artwork. You can change the wording, font, size, color, alignment and line breaks without repainting the original letters. Photoshop identifies these as type layers; GIMP creates a distinct text layer with its Text tool.

If the project contains a live layer, it is the preferred route. It preserves the original background and usually produces the most faithful result. Save an editable copy in a layer-retaining format such as PSD when working in Photoshop, rather than overwriting a flattened export.

Flattened pixels

In a JPG, PNG, screenshot or an exported graphic with no text layer, the lettering is part of the pixel image. A conventional text tool cannot select those pixels as the original words. You have two practical choices:

  • Extract the lettering: use a feature that recognizes text and creates a new editable layer.
  • Reconstruct the area: remove or cover the old lettering, repair the background, and typeset the replacement words on top.

The second approach is often necessary when extraction is unavailable or when the recognition result needs extensive correction. Its difficulty depends on what lies behind the old words: a flat color is relatively forgiving, while a photograph, texture, shadow or object crossing the lettering requires careful retouching.

How do I edit text that is already editable?

Photoshop: change a type layer

  1. Make a safety copy. Duplicate the original file or save a second working version before editing.
  2. Select the type layer. In the Layers panel, click the layer containing the words you want to change. Do not rasterize it; rasterizing converts editable type into pixels.
  3. Choose the Type tool. Select the Horizontal Type tool or Vertical Type tool from the toolbar. Adobe’s desktop instructions support clicking in the text, editing the characters, and committing the change.
  4. Edit the wording. Click inside the text and replace all or part of the sentence. You can select individual words or the complete layer, then adjust the font, weight, size, color, tracking, leading and alignment in the type controls.
  5. Commit the edit. Use the editor’s commit control or select another tool. Check that the new line breaks do not collide with nearby artwork.
  6. Save an editable master. Save as PSD, or another format that retains layers, before exporting a JPG, PNG or PDF for delivery.

Changing the length of a sentence can alter wrapping and the text box’s height. Review the complete composition at 100 percent and at the size at which people will normally view it. A short replacement may leave an unexpectedly large gap; a longer one may overlap a logo, border or image subject.

GIMP: edit an existing text layer

  1. Keep an untouched copy of the image or project.
  2. In the Layers dock, select the layer marked as text rather than a painted or background layer.
  3. Activate GIMP’s Text tool, then click in the lettering and make the change.
  4. Adjust the type options for font, size, color, justification and spacing as needed.
  5. Leave the layer as a text layer and save the project in a format that preserves layers, such as GIMP’s native project format.

GIMP’s manual warns that manipulating a text layer with a different tool can affect subsequent editing or undo changes that occur when the text is redrawn. If the words must remain editable, avoid painting directly on that layer and perform visual cleanup on a separate layer.

Can I edit text in a JPG or screenshot?

Not as the original text object. A JPG or screenshot normally contains only pixels, so the editor has no character data, font setting or text box to modify. You can still produce a convincing change by extracting the lettering or rebuilding it.

Option 1: extract text into a new layer

Canva’s Grab Text feature is designed for this workflow. Select the image text, let the feature turn it into an editable layer, correct the wording, restyle it and export the result as PNG, JPG or PDF. Canva states that Grab Text requires a Pro account.

Extraction is not the same as recovering the original project. Recognition can misread characters, punctuation, accents or line breaks, and the resulting layer may not retain the exact original font. Proofread every word and compare the new layer with the image before exporting.

Option 2: cover the old lettering and typeset over it

When the background is simple, manually repairing the region can be faster and more controllable than extraction:

  1. Duplicate the image layer so the original pixels remain available.
  2. Select the area containing the old words, leaving a small margin around edges, shadows and halos.
  3. Use retouching, cloning, healing, painting or another background-repair method appropriate to the image. Sample colors and textures from nearby, undamaged areas.
  4. Inspect the repaired area without the replacement text visible. Remove remnants, repeated texture patterns and hard selection edges.
  5. Create a new text layer and enter the replacement wording.
  6. Position and format the new type to match the design, then review the entire image at normal viewing size.

There is no single repair tool that is best for every background. A uniform wall, gradient or solid color is much easier to rebuild than hair, foliage, fabric, reflections or a subject that passes behind the letters. Keep the original layer hidden rather than deleting it, so you can recover details if the repair damages the surrounding image.

How do I match the original font and layout?

Matching is a visual reconstruction, not merely a spelling change. Compare the replacement with unaffected lettering elsewhere in the design, if any exists.

Font family and weight

Look at distinctive letter shapes: the lowercase “a” and “g,” the width of numerals, the terminals, the height of capitals and the thickness of strokes. Then match the font family and weight as closely as the available library allows. A font that is technically similar can still look wrong if its width or x-height changes the line length.

Photoshop’s Match Font feature can suggest similar fonts from a selected text region. Adobe describes this as finding similar-font suggestions, not guaranteeing an exact identification. Treat the suggestions as a starting list and compare the result by eye.

  • AI Image Enhancer with Face Retouch - Clearer, sharper photos with AI denoising, deblurring, and face retouching.

Canva says exact-font matching depends on the original font being available in its library. If it is absent, Canva chooses a close font. That substitution may require manual adjustment of size, tracking and line breaks.

Size, spacing and line breaks

  • Size: Match the height of capitals and lowercase letters, not just the nominal point value.
  • Weight: Check whether strokes are regular, medium, bold, condensed or outlined.
  • Tracking: Compare the overall width of a word and the space between individual letters.
  • Leading: Measure the vertical distance between lines if the original is multiline.
  • Alignment: Reproduce left, center, right or justified alignment and the text box’s anchor point.
  • Case and punctuation: Preserve capitalization, apostrophes, quotation marks, accents and symbols exactly when accuracy matters.

When a replacement sentence is longer or shorter, do not force it into the old box without checking readability. Adjust the box, tracking or line breaks deliberately, and keep the visual hierarchy consistent with headings, labels and nearby objects.

Which editing route should you choose?

Situation Best starting point Important trade-offs
Layered Photoshop project with a type layer Photoshop Type tool Directly edits the existing lettering; save a PSD or another layer-retaining master for future changes.
Layered GIMP project with a text layer GIMP Text tool Retains editability while the text layer remains intact; using other tools on that layer can complicate later edits or undo intervening changes.
Flattened graphic and an online guided workflow is acceptable Canva Grab Text Turns selected image text into an editable layer; Canva says the feature requires Pro, and an exact font is not guaranteed.
Exact visual matching is critical Use font suggestions, then compare and tune manually Photoshop offers similar-font suggestions; Canva uses the exact font only when it is in its library. Neither source promises perfect reconstruction.
Simple background behind the old words Manual repair followed by a new text layer Often manageable with careful sampling, but inspect for seams, halos and repeated patterns.
Complex photographic background Test extraction and reconstruction on a duplicate Objects, texture and shadows can make cleanup time-consuming. Official feature pages do not establish a universal winner or comparative accuracy for every image.

Use these questions to decide before you start:

  • Does a live text layer already exist?
  • Must the result remain editable for another person or a later revision?
  • How exact must the font and placement be?
  • What is behind the lettering: a solid color, a gradient, texture or a detailed photograph?
  • Do you need a desktop application, or is an online workflow acceptable?
  • Does the chosen feature require a paid plan?
  • Will the final file be shared digitally, printed or imported into another design project?

At full size

  • Check every character, accent, number and punctuation mark against the intended wording.
  • Look for halos from the old lettering, hard selection boundaries or a repaired patch that does not follow the surrounding texture.
  • Inspect shadows, glows, outlines and partially covered objects around the text.
  • Confirm that letter edges are sharp enough for the output resolution and that no accidental blur was introduced.
  • Compare the replacement’s baseline, cap height, weight, spacing and alignment with nearby design elements.

At normal viewing size

  • Make sure the new words remain legible and have the same visual priority as the original.
  • Check whether the changed line length creates an unbalanced gap or draws attention away from the image subject.
  • View the image against the background color or page where it will actually appear.
  • Ask another reader to proofread the final wording if the image carries important instructions, dates or names.

Zooming in helps find seams; zooming out reveals hierarchy and readability. Both views are necessary, and neither is a measured guarantee that every background will look seamless.

How should you save and export the finished image?

  1. Preserve the source. Keep the untouched original in a separate location.
  2. Save the editable master. Retain text and repair layers in PSD, a GIMP project file or the editor’s equivalent. This is the file to use for later wording changes.
  3. Save a delivery copy. Export PNG when you need lossless pixels or transparency, JPG for a conventional photographic share, or PDF when the destination requires a document-style file. Choose the format required by the recipient rather than flattening your only copy.
  4. Reopen the export. Verify that fonts, transparency, color, line breaks and image dimensions survived the export.
  5. Name versions clearly. Use separate names for the layered master and the final delivery file so a flattened export is not mistaken for the editable source.

Adobe specifically recommends a layer-retaining format such as PSD when a Photoshop type layer needs to remain editable. A flattened export is appropriate for sharing, but it should not replace the working file when future edits matter.

Common problems and fixes

The Type tool will not select the words

You may be clicking a flattened image layer or the wrong layer. Return to the Layers panel, look for a text-layer indicator and select it before activating the Type tool. If no text layer exists, switch to extraction or reconstruction; repeatedly clicking a JPG will not turn its pixels into original text.

The extracted wording is wrong

Zoom in and proofread character by character. Recognition can confuse similar shapes, especially at low resolution or over textured backgrounds. Correct the text manually on the new layer and compare punctuation, capitalization and line breaks with the source.

The replacement font looks close but not convincing

Try a different weight or width, then adjust size, tracking and leading. Use Photoshop’s Match Font suggestions as candidates rather than proof of identity. In Canva, check whether the original font is in the library; if not, expect to tune a substitute.

The repaired background has a visible patch

Hide the replacement text and inspect the repair alone. Sample from several nearby areas instead of copying one small region repeatedly, soften abrupt transitions, and rebuild shadows or texture that the old lettering interrupted. If the background is highly complex, test a different repair strategy on a duplicate rather than damaging the original.

The new words overlap other design elements

Shorten the copy only if the intended message permits it; otherwise resize the text box, adjust line breaks or rebalance surrounding spacing. Review the entire composition at normal viewing size before committing.

I saved over the only editable version

Stop editing that file and check autosave, version history or backups. For future work, keep the layered master separate from every exported JPG, PNG or PDF and make a duplicate before any repair operation.

What the evidence does—and does not—establish

Official instructions support direct editing of live text in Photoshop and GIMP, extraction of image text into an editable layer with Canva Grab Text, and the use of font-suggestion tools as aids. They do not publish a universal accuracy score for extraction, a guaranteed seamless repair method, or comparative performance across every background. Software interfaces, plan requirements and available features can change, so confirm the current controls in the application you are using.

The dependable principle is therefore simple: preserve layers whenever they exist, treat flattened lettering as a reconstruction job, and inspect both the typography and the repaired pixels before delivery.
