On Discord for Windows, macOS, Linux, or a web browser, open User Settings → Voice & Video, then choose your microphone from Input Device. Speak and use Mic Test → Let’s Check to confirm that Discord is capturing the intended device.
Change the microphone on desktop or browser Discord
The current desktop and browser path is the same across Windows, macOS, Linux, and Discord in a browser:
- Open Discord and select the User Settings gear beside your username.
- Choose Voice & Video.
- In the Voice section, open Input Device.
- Select the microphone you want Discord to use, such as a USB microphone, headset microphone, webcam microphone, built-in laptop microphone, Bluetooth headset, or virtual microphone.
- Speak and watch the input indicator respond.
Discord may keep using a previously selected microphone after you connect another one, so select the new device manually rather than assuming it switched automatically. Discord documents this path in its audio-input troubleshooting guide.
Do not confuse input and output
Input Device is your microphone. Output Device is where you hear other people, such as headphones, speakers, or a headset. If your microphone is correct but Discord audio comes from the wrong speakers, change Output Device separately.

Test the microphone you selected
- Remain in User Settings → Voice & Video.
- Find Mic Test and select Let’s Check.
- Speak, then listen to the playback through the selected output device.
The built-in Mic Test is documented for desktop and browser Discord, not the mobile app. If you start it while connected to a voice channel, Discord temporarily mutes and deafens you until the test ends. The procedure is described in Discord’s Mic Testing guide.
A successful test confirms basic microphone capture and playback. It does not override a server mute, a missing channel permission, or Push to Talk that has not been activated.

Change audio input behavior on iPhone or Android
Mobile Discord does not consistently provide the same desktop-style microphone list. The phone’s operating system and connected accessory generally control which physical microphone is routed to the call.
- Tap your avatar in the bottom-right corner.
- Tap the gear in the top-right corner.
- Scroll to Voice under App Settings.
- Connect the desired wired microphone, headset, or Bluetooth headset through the phone’s controls before or during the call.
- If the accessory is not active, open the phone’s call audio, Bluetooth, or audio-output controls and select it.
On iPhone, Discord’s troubleshooting instructions refer to the in-call Bluetooth icon and AirPlay selection for external audio output. That is primarily an output-routing control, not a guarantee of a universal manual microphone selector. See Discord’s mobile voice troubleshooting guide.

Input Device, Input Mode, and sensitivity explained
| Setting | What it changes |

| Output Device | Where Discord plays other people’s voices and other audio. |
| Input Mode | When Discord transmits: Voice Activity or Push to Talk. |
| Input Sensitivity | How loud a sound must be before Voice Activity transmits it. |
| Input Volume | The level of the microphone signal sent to Discord. |
Voice Activity or Push to Talk?
In User Settings → Voice & Video, open Input Mode and choose:
- Voice Activity: hands-free transmission when Discord detects speech. Adjust sensitivity if speech is cut off or background noise opens the microphone.
- Push to Talk: transmission only while you hold the assigned shortcut. It is useful around keyboards, fans, family, or game noise, but requires deliberate key presses.
In a browser, Push to Talk works only while the Discord browser window is focused; system-wide Push to Talk requires the desktop app. Discord explains these options in its voice input modes guide.

If the microphone does not appear in Input Device
Work through these checks in order:
- Disconnect and reconnect the microphone. For USB devices, try another USB port.
- Turn off the headset’s physical mute switch and check that its cable or adapter is fully inserted.
- Verify that Windows, macOS, Linux, or the phone recognizes the microphone and that it is not disabled at the operating-system level.
- Grant Discord microphone permission in the operating system. In a browser, also allow microphone access for the Discord site.
- Close recording, meeting, streaming, or voice applications that might have exclusive control of the microphone.
- Quit Discord completely and reopen it, then check Voice & Video again.
- Install available Discord, operating-system, and audio-driver updates.
- For Bluetooth headsets, check that the correct call or hands-free profile is connected; a stereo playback profile may not expose the headset microphone.
If the operating system cannot see the device, Discord cannot select it. Resolve the hardware, port, Bluetooth, or operating-system detection issue first. Discord recommends checking physical connections, permissions, software, and drivers in its audio-input troubleshooting instructions.

- Check your local microphone mute button and whether a server moderator has server-muted you.
- Confirm that your role and the channel grant the Speak permission.
- Make sure Input Mode is not set to Push to Talk unless you are pressing its assigned key.
- Raise Input Volume if the signal is extremely quiet.
- With Voice Activity, lower or disable automatic sensitivity and adjust it manually if speech is being missed.
- Run Mic Test → Let’s Check. If it works there but not in a server, the problem is more likely mute status, permissions, Push to Talk, or a channel-specific restriction.
- Test the microphone in another application. A failure there indicates an operating-system or hardware problem rather than a Discord selection problem.

- In User Settings → Voice & Video, switch Audio Subsystem between Standard and Legacy for persistent desktop audio problems.
- Try disabling Enable Quality of Service High Packet Priority when voice audio is robotic, cuts out, or behaves inconsistently; this is a conditional network-related fix, not a microphone-selection requirement.
- On Windows, try running Discord as administrator if another application or permission boundary prevents access.
- Use User Settings → Voice & Video → Debugging → Reset Voice and Video Settings as a last resort. Resetting removes customized voice settings, so reconfigure Input Device, Input Mode, volume, and sensitivity afterward.
- Restart the computer and reinstall Discord only after the less disruptive steps fail.
Discord’s voice-chat client requirements can change. Its notice dated February 20, 2026, introduced minimum supported client versions and encryption requirements; if an old client cannot join voice chat, update Discord before deeper troubleshooting. Check the current requirements at Discord’s minimum client-version notice.
