How Do History Writers Get Paid? Rates, Rights, and Payment Terms

History writers may be paid a flat fee, an advance against royalties, royalties on sales, or a combination. There is no history-specific standard rate established by the available sources. To judge an offer, look beyond the headline payment: the rights granted, royalty calculation, payment schedule, and costs or extra work assigned to you can all change its value.

Common ways history writers are paid

Fees for commissioned work

An article, educational resource, or other defined assignment may pay an agreed fee. Put the deliverable, word count or scope, deadlines, revision rounds, and payment dates in writing. Clarify whether research, promotion, or additional revisions are included. Society of Authors guidance for educational writers says promotional work should be paid separately when the writer is paid on a fee basis, and cautions that broad competing-work restrictions can constrain future assignments. These are negotiation points, not universal terms for every history-writing job. Society of Authors guidance on rates and fees.

Advances and royalties for books

A book deal may include an advance against future royalties, royalties without an advance, or another negotiated structure. An advance is normally accounted for against royalties: it should not be read as a guaranteed extra payment on top of all royalties. Check the contract to see when installments are due and how earned royalties are applied to the advance.

Royalty income depends on the contract’s definition of the royalty base, deductions, formats, discounts, returns, territories, and licensed rights. A percentage alone is not enough to compare offers.

Payment through an agent

A contract may direct advances and royalties to an agent, who deducts commission and remits the balance. The Authors Guild advises authors to specify the remittance period, require accounting, and define which work and rights the agent represents. Authors Guild contract guidance.

What rates can history writers expect?

The sources reviewed do not establish a current, history-specific rate survey or a standard per-word figure for history writers. The Society of Authors reports that, in its experience, translation fees are negotiated starting in the region of £100 per thousand words; the page was updated in March 2022 and expressly says that figure is an observed blended translation fee, not a recommended, standard, or maximum rate. It is not a history-writing benchmark. Society of Authors: Rates and fees.

Instead of treating an unsourced figure as a market rate, assess an offer against the work and rights requested. Relevant factors include the research burden, length or deliverable, revision scope, deadline, exclusivity, and whether the payment covers additional tasks. These help frame negotiation but do not substitute for a reliable rate survey.

How rights and contract terms affect income

Define exactly what rights you grant

Specify the work covered and the formats, languages, territories, term, exclusivity, and subsidiary rights involved. Establish whether rights are licensed or assigned, and when and how they can return to you. The Authors Guild notes that publishing-agreement terms affect both the control an author retains and how much the author is paid. Authors Guild: Author Contracts.

Separate formats and licensed uses

Print, ebook, audiobook, adaptation, translation, serialization, and other uses may receive different royalty treatment. Ask how income from licenses to third parties is accounted for and what share is payable to you.

As examples in its US-facing model contract—not as evidence of universal industry rates—the Authors Guild specifies 25% of publisher net receipts for the electronic edition and electronically delivered audiobook. Its physical-audio example is 10% of publisher net receipts on the first 10,000 copies and 12% on additional copies. The model also includes print and large-print examples. These are negotiating reference points, not a survey of what history publishers pay. Authors Guild model-contract guidance.

Understand the royalty base and deductions

Check whether the royalty is calculated from list price or publisher net receipts, and how discounts, returns, reserves, taxes, and third-party licenses affect the calculation. The same percentage applied to net receipts can yield less than a percentage of list price. Confirm whether each format has a separate rate and whether rates change at specified sales levels.

Require clear statements and payment dates

The Authors Guild model clause calls for semiannual royalty statements and payment within three months after each accounting period closes. It is a model proposal, not a default term; check the actual contract for reporting detail, payment timing, and a process for notifying the publisher in writing if money is late. Authors Guild contract guidance.

Account for permissions, indexing, and extra work

History books can use images, quotations, and documentary extracts. Publishers commonly place permissions work and costs on the author, and nonfiction contracts may require the author to supply or fund an index. Clarify who obtains permissions, who pays, whether there is a cap, and whether expenses are charged against an advance or royalty account. Do not assume every quotation or image requires paid permission; requirements depend on the specific material and applicable rules.

Also define what research, manuscript materials, and revisions are included, and whether promotion or exclusivity is expected. Society of Authors educational-writer guidance recommends narrowing overbroad competing-work restrictions and treating additional promotional work as separately paid when the arrangement is fee-based. • Guaranteed payment: fee or advance amount, installment dates, and any conditions attached to payment.
  • Royalties: calculation base, rate by format, deductions, and any escalation points.
  • Rights: formats, territory, term, exclusivity, subsidiary rights, and reversion conditions.
  • Accounting: statement frequency and detail, payment lag, and late-payment or audit provisions.
  • Costs and obligations: permissions, index, promotion, revisions, and other out-of-pocket or unpaid work.
  • Agent arrangements: commission, remittance timing, and the work and rights covered.

Terms vary by publisher, format, territory, and negotiation. The Society of Authors material is UK-oriented; the Authors Guild model contract is a US-facing negotiating resource. Neither guarantees what a particular writer will be offered, and neither is legal advice.
