How Do Fungi Keep the Planet Healthy? Decomposition, Roots, Soil and Carbon

Fungi keep ecosystems running by decomposing dead material, partnering with plant roots, building soil structure and feeding the wider food web. Their effects are powerful but conditional: the species present, their plant partners, moisture, temperature, soil chemistry and land use determine whether a fungal process stores carbon, releases it, suppresses disease or causes harm.

How do fungi keep the planet healthy?

Fungi are the connective tissue of many terrestrial ecosystems. Their threadlike hyphae extend through soil, leaf litter, wood and other habitats, where they move nutrients and carbon and interact with plants, microbes and animals.

  • Decomposition: fungi digest cellulose and lignin in dead plants, converting complex residues into fungal biomass, carbon dioxide and smaller molecules that other organisms can use.
  • Root partnership: mycorrhizal fungi exchange soil resources for carbohydrates made by plants.
  • Soil and food-web support: hyphae help aggregate soil, while fungi provide food, disease suppression and habitat for other organisms.

FAO describes soil organisms as a connected food web that cycles energy and nutrients, supports plant growth, filters water, sequesters carbon, degrades some contaminants and supplies compounds used in medicine.

Decomposers return nutrients

Dead leaves, roots and wood contain compounds that many organisms cannot break down efficiently. Fungal enzymes attack cellulose and lignin, preventing organic debris from accumulating indefinitely. The resulting fungal tissue, dissolved compounds and mineral nutrients enter the soil food web, where they can be consumed or taken up by plants.

Decomposition is not the same as permanent carbon storage. Fungal metabolism releases some of the carbon in dead material as carbon dioxide, even while other carbon remains in fungal residues or soil organic matter.

Hyphae change the physical soil

Fungal threads bind soil particles into aggregates and create connected pore spaces. Better aggregation can improve infiltration and water storage, reduce erosion and give roots and soil organisms a more stable habitat. These effects are especially relevant where soil has been compacted or disturbed, although their size depends on local conditions and the fungi present.

What do mycorrhizal fungi do?

Mycorrhizal fungi form symbioses with plant roots. The plant supplies carbon compounds produced by photosynthesis; in return, the fungus explores soil beyond the root surface with a branching hyphal network and helps the plant obtain nutrients and water.

Because one fungal network can contact many soil particles and, in some systems, connect multiple roots, it changes how plants acquire resources. Kew describes these partnerships as fundamental to plant and ecosystem functioning, and Rutgers New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station calls mycorrhizal fungi “a foundational aspect of terrestrial ecosystems, driving nutrient cycling, supporting plant health, and promoting biodiversity.”

Two major mycorrhizal patterns

Fungal role Exchange Documented scale or setting
Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi Plant carbohydrates exchanged for greater access to soil nutrients and water through hyphae A 2026 report on a Science analysis of 322 studies and more than 16,000 soil cores said these fungi associate with about 70% of land plant species worldwide.
Ectomycorrhizal fungi Carbon from woody plants exchanged for soil-resource acquisition University of Florida IFAS reports symbioses with approximately 60% of trees and woody plants in temperate and boreal forests.

The percentages describe different fungal groups and biological settings; they are not a single estimate for all plants or all forests.

Are fungi good for soil?

Often, but “fungi” is not synonymous with “beneficial.” Decomposer and mycorrhizal species can improve nutrient cycling and structure, while pathogenic species can damage plants. The outcome also changes with soil chemistry, moisture, temperature, disturbance, land use and the identity of the plant partner.

Benefits to soil function

  • Nutrient cycling: decomposition releases compounds and nutrients that move through the soil food web.
  • Aggregation: hyphae help bind particles, producing pore spaces for air and water movement.
  • Plant performance: mycorrhizal networks can improve access to water and nutrients.
  • Disease pressure: diverse soil communities can compete with or suppress some pathogens.
  • Resilience: fungal responses to drought and other stressors influence how ecosystems recover and continue functioning.

USGS reports that greater soil biodiversity, including fungi, is positively associated with nutrient cycling, decomposition and plant production, and with a lower potential for pathogenicity. Those are observed associations across soil communities, not a guarantee that adding any particular fungus will produce the same result.

Do fungi help store carbon?

Yes, fungi can move plant carbon into soil and contribute to its stabilization, but the climate pathway is not one-way.

How carbon enters fungal and soil pools

Plants send photosynthetic carbon to mycorrhizal partners. Carbon then enters living hyphae, fungal residues and soil-associated organic matter. Hyphae also help form aggregates that can physically protect some organic material from rapid breakdown.

Rutgers’ 2025 New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station page cites an estimate that mycorrhizal fungi store 13 gigatons of carbon annually, described there as roughly one-third of current annual fossil-fuel carbon-dioxide emissions. That figure is a cited estimate, not a universal measurement of yearly storage, and it should not be interpreted as an offset for fossil-fuel emissions.

Why the balance is difficult to predict

Fungi also respire. Decomposers release carbon dioxide while breaking down litter, and mycorrhizal fungi can alter how much organic matter free-living decomposers consume. University of New Hampshire research notes that nutrient-acquisition strategies may either accelerate soil-organic-matter decay or suppress it through competition with free-living decomposers. Which effect dominates varies by ecosystem and remains an active research question.

How fungi support biodiversity and food webs

Fungi are both ecosystem engineers and food. Soil animals consume fungal tissue, and those animals become prey for larger organisms. Aboveground fungi provide food for animals and rely on animal-mediated spore dispersal; Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria identifies spore dispersal, pathogen suppression and physical soil stabilization among their ecosystem roles.

Fungal partnerships also support plant diversity. Different plants can associate with different fungal communities, changing access to nutrients and water and influencing which species establish after disturbance. A diverse fungal community can therefore affect vegetation, decomposition rates and the flow of energy through the entire soil food web.

Where fungal effects vary or fail

There is no universal “good fungus” rule. Outcomes depend on:

  • the fungal species or community;
  • the plant partner and its carbon supply;
  • soil pH, nutrients and texture;
  • water availability and temperature;
  • drought, fire, cultivation, compaction and other disturbances; and
  • whether the process is decomposition, mutualism, disease or consumption by another organism.

These conditions explain why a fungal inoculant that works in one soil or crop cannot automatically be expected to work elsewhere. Kew and UC Agriculture and Natural Resources describe continuing efforts to measure fungal communities, carbon flows and drought effects, so several mechanisms are still being refined.

What to remember about fungi and planetary health

Fungal strategy Main service Carbon pathway Important qualification
Decomposer Breaks down cellulose and lignin; returns nutrients Releases some carbon as carbon dioxide while leaving some in biomass and soil compounds Rate changes with substrate, moisture, temperature and community composition
Mycorrhizal mutualist Improves plant access to nutrients and water; moves carbon belowground Carbon enters hyphae and soil-associated pools Benefits depend on plant partner, soil conditions and fungal strategy
Soil-food-web resource Feeds animals and supports biodiversity and spore dispersal Transfers carbon among organisms Effects vary by habitat and food-web structure
Pathogen or antagonist Can cause disease or suppress competing pathogens Carbon effects depend on the interaction Not all fungi are beneficial to plants
