Engineers test a rocket-engine restart by reproducing the conditions and sequence the engine will face in flight, then collecting evidence that it can ignite, run, shut down, and ignite again without unacceptable behavior. A credible test is more than pressing the start command twice: teams condition the propellants and hardware, simulate the expected space environment, monitor pressures and temperatures through ignition and shutdown, apply abort rules, and inspect the engine before another firing.
The exact qualification plan depends on the engine, stage, mission and certification rules. NASA’s public work on RL10/Centaur, the Space Launch System’s Interim Cryogenic Propulsion Stage (ICPS), and new-production RS-25 engines shows the pattern, but it does not establish one universal pass/fail checklist for every launch provider.

What a restart test has to prove
A restartable engine must operate at separated points in a mission rather than only during one continuous burn. Between burns, the engine and stage may coast for a long time, experience very low external pressure and temperature, receive solar heating, and manage propellants that have changed state or distribution. Valves, turbomachinery, igniters, controllers, tanks and thermal protection all have to be ready for the next start.

- Can the engine reach the intended ignition conditions after a coast or conditioning period?
- Does the ignition transient stay within allowed pressure and temperature limits?
- Can the engine deliver the planned thrust and mixture conditions for the next burn?
- Does shutdown leave the hardware, lines and controls in a state suitable for another start?
- Can the test team distinguish an engine problem from a facility, sensor or software problem?
Those questions are answered with a sequence of firings and inspections designed around the mission, not with a generic “second start” demonstration.
Four dimensions engineers match to flight
NASA examples can be compared along four practical axes. They are useful for understanding test design, but they are not a formal industry-wide taxonomy.
| Dimension | What engineers try to reproduce | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Environment fidelity | Ambient stand conditions, or simulated altitude, vacuum, low background temperature and changing thermal exposure | External pressure and heat transfer affect nozzle flow, valves, tanks, insulation and ignition behavior |
| Sequence fidelity | One firing, repeated starts, or the actual order and spacing of burns in a mission | A start after a long coast can be different from a start immediately after a previous run |
| System level | Engine-only testing, stage testing, or an integrated vehicle test | Stage tanks, vents, relief devices, avionics and structural interfaces can change the restart conditions |
| Test objective | Development, troubleshooting, acceptance, or design certification | A diagnostic firing may deliberately explore a problem, while certification testing must demonstrate defined requirements |
How a restart test is run
1. Define the mission sequence and test limits
Before hardware is fired, the program converts the flight plan into test conditions. Engineers identify how many burns are required, the expected burn durations, the coast or conditioning intervals, propellant temperatures and pressures, commands sent by the flight computer, and the limits that trigger an abort. They also decide which parts of the vehicle must be represented on the ground and which can be modeled.

For a three-burn upper-stage mission, for example, a test series may include firings that represent the first, second and third engine burns, in the relevant order. NASA’s historical RL10/Centaur account used that type of mission-oriented organization rather than treating each firing as an isolated event.
2. Check out the vehicle, engine and facility
Checkout verifies electrical connections, valves, instrumentation, propellant systems, control software and safety systems before hot fire. A historical NASA Rocket Engine Test Facility description illustrates the logic: instruments were calibrated, pressure and temperature channels were recorded, propellant and chamber pressures were checked after valve opening, and the test had provisions to abort if monitored pressures became abnormal.
Modern facilities can use different hardware and procedures, so that historical sequence should be read as an example of the safeguards involved, not as a universal current checklist.

3. Reproduce the relevant space environment
Some restart tests are performed on ordinary stands when the objective does not require a vacuum or long-duration thermal simulation. For missions in which altitude or space exposure changes the physics, engineers use facilities that lower the surrounding pressure and control thermal conditions.
NASA describes its In-Space Propulsion Facility as able to expose an engine or vehicle to low pressure, low background temperatures and dynamic solar heating before and during firings. The facility’s published capability reaches a vacuum of up to 10-7 torr. NASA also lists nominal thrust capability of 100,000 lbf and a 400,000 lbf maximum; those are facility ratings, not a statement that every engine or every test uses those values.
4. Condition the propellants and hardware
Teams establish the temperatures, pressures and valve states expected at the instant of a flight restart. Cryogenic stages may need controlled chill-down and venting, while other engines may require different thermal conditioning. The purpose is to avoid proving only that an engine can start in an unusually convenient ground state.
Conditioning also includes the state left by the previous burn: residual heat, trapped gases, tank pressure, line pressure, turbopump speed and controller status. A test can intentionally vary one of these parameters to investigate a starting difficulty, but the variation is recorded so engineers know what the result actually represents.
5. Fire an igniter or perform a start sequence
The ignition sequence opens valves, admits propellants, energizes the igniter and commands the engine controller through its programmed start. Historical NASA procedures included a pretest igniter firing and then a closely monitored engine start. Current engines may use different igniters and control logic, but the evidence sought is the same: repeatable timing, stable pressure rise and confirmation that combustion begins as intended.

6. Monitor pressure, temperature, thrust and controls
High-speed instrumentation records chamber and propellant pressures, temperatures, valve positions, turbomachinery behavior, structural vibration and thrust. Control-room displays and automated limits compare measurements with the test’s approved envelopes. If a pressure rises or falls outside an allowed range, operators can shut down or abort instead of allowing a damaged engine to continue firing.
Data quality is part of the test. A sensor that is misconfigured, saturated or wired incorrectly can create a false failure—or hide a real one. Engineers therefore check calibration, channel configuration and time synchronization before interpreting a restart result.
7. Shut down, purge and prepare for another start
A restart demonstration includes the end of the first burn. Shutdown commands close valves and remove thrust in a controlled way; purges clear residual propellant or combustion products where the design requires them. The hardware is then returned to the thermal and pressure state needed for the next sequence.
The interval between firings is significant. A rapid second start tests one condition; a restart after a long simulated coast tests another. The schedule is chosen to represent the mission or to isolate a suspected failure mechanism.
8. Inspect, analyze and repeat
After firing, teams review time histories, inspect hardware and reconcile instrumentation with independent measurements. They look for erosion, leaks, unexpected deposits, damaged insulation, valve wear and changes in start timing. If a start problem appears, engineers may run a series of shorter or differently conditioned tests to identify the cause before returning to the full mission sequence.
NASA’s historical RL10/Centaur report describes facility and vehicle checkout, a cold-flow acceleration test, a 10-second shakedown firing and a series representing the engine firings in a three-burn mission. It also records a series of 10-second restart tests used to investigate and resolve starting problems. That is a concrete troubleshooting example, not a universal recipe for every modern engine.

What NASA’s In-Space Propulsion Facility demonstrates
The ISP facility matters because it can combine environmental simulation with repeated hot fires. NASA says the facility can duplicate multiple ignition sequences to simulate actual space-flight operation. Its capability to apply low pressure and thermal exposure lets engineers test more than the engine’s response on a sea-level stand.
More than 100 RL10 engine hot firings were conducted during Centaur development, according to a NASA facility history. The number reflects an extensive development campaign for that engine and stage family; it is not a required count for all restartable engines. The value of such a campaign is the accumulated evidence across different configurations, operating points and failure investigations.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Concrete flight example: the SLS Interim Cryogenic Propulsion Stage
NASA identifies the ICPS as the in-space stage used for the first three Artemis missions and says its RL10 engine is intended to fire twice. That second burn is why restart capability is a stage-level requirement, not merely an engine laboratory feature.
The ICPS uses liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen. NASA notes that the stage includes modifications such as a modified liquid-hydrogen vent and relief valve that supports in-flight engine restart. Such hardware changes show why engineers test the integrated propulsion system: tank pressure management, venting and relief behavior can determine whether the engine receives acceptable conditions for its next ignition.
Testing for this mission therefore has to represent the planned two-burn sequence and the stage’s propellant-management configuration. It would be misleading to generalize the ICPS arrangement to every upper stage, because restart timing, propellants, vents and engine controls vary by vehicle.

Certification evidence is program-specific
Development and troubleshooting tests answer “what is happening?” Certification tests answer whether a particular design meets its approved requirements. NASA’s new-production RS-25 certification effort illustrates the scale of one such program. NASA described plans for 12 starts and 6,150 seconds of hot-fire time, with test power levels from 80% to 113% to satisfy throttle-verification requirements.
Best Value
Those figures belong to that RS-25 certification series. They are not generic acceptance criteria for restart engines, and they do not mean that another engine must complete 12 starts or 6,150 seconds. A different program may set different counts, durations, power points, environmental conditions and inspection rules based on its design and mission.
Why an apparent failure may be a test-system problem
Engineers must separate propulsion behavior from the way the test was instrumented. NASA reported an RS-25 hot-fire that ended early when a non-flight vibration-monitoring system triggered a shutdown. Review found that accelerometers had been configured improperly, while preliminary data indicated the engine was performing nominally.
That event was not a restart test, but it demonstrates an important discipline: an early shutdown is an observation requiring diagnosis, not automatic proof that the engine failed. Teams examine sensor setup, software thresholds, wiring, facility commands and independent measurements before changing the engine design or declaring a qualification failure.

| Approach | Typical strength | Main limitation | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ambient engine-stand firing | Accessible, repeatable measurements and relatively simple operations | Does not fully reproduce vacuum, thermal exposure or stage propellant behavior | Early development, component checks and controlled troubleshooting |
| Altitude or vacuum hot fire | Closer representation of external pressure and nozzle environment | More complex facility operations and instrumentation | Verifying starts and burns whose behavior depends on space-like conditions |
| Repeated mission-sequence firing | Tests start order, shutdown state and readiness for another burn | Requires longer campaigns and careful conditioning between firings | Restart development and mission-specific qualification |
| Integrated stage or vehicle test | Includes tanks, vents, relief devices, avionics and interfaces | Harder to isolate the source of an anomaly | Confirming that the engine receives the conditions created by the flight vehicle |
| Certification series | Produces documented evidence against approved requirements | Exact limits and test counts are program-controlled and may not be public | Design certification and production acceptance |
What counts as convincing evidence?
A convincing result is a traceable set of firings, measurements and inspections tied to the planned mission. Engineers want repeatable ignition timing, pressure and temperature behavior inside approved limits, the required thrust and duration, a controlled shutdown, and no unacceptable hardware damage before the next start. They also need confidence that the sensors and abort systems were configured correctly.
Public NASA material does not establish one current, universal pass/fail standard or a complete restart qualification protocol for all launch providers and engine designs. Exact thresholds, instrumentation limits and proprietary procedures are therefore program-specific. Publicly reported numbers—such as the ISP vacuum capability, its thrust ratings, the RL10 development firing history, or the RS-25 certification plan—should be read in their stated facility or program context.
The practical answer
Engineers test a rocket-engine restart before launch by building a ground version of the mission: prepare the engine and stage, reproduce relevant vacuum and thermal conditions, execute the planned ignition and burn sequence more than once, monitor every critical transient, enforce abort rules, purge and inspect the hardware, then repeat until the evidence supports the program’s requirements. The test is successful only when the data, hardware condition and test-system integrity together show that the engine can be ready for its next burn in the conditions the flight plan demands.
