The exact fees depend on the provider, country, account, and transaction.
Who pays when you use a digital wallet?
For an ordinary purchase, the consumer may pay no separate wallet fee while the merchant pays a processing fee. The wallet or payment provider earns revenue for facilitating the payment, even if the buyer sees no charge at checkout.

PayPal illustrates this two-sided model in the United States: its consumer fee page says purchases are generally free unless currency conversion applies, while its business fee schedule sets fees for merchants accepting payments. When a wallet handles a customer’s purchase, it may charge the merchant for processing. That charge can vary by payment type and transaction details. PayPal’s US merchant schedule, for example, separates standard commercial transactions from QR transactions, Pay Later, and other payment types, and distinguishes domestic from international terms. There is no single “digital wallet fee” that applies across providers. A merchant’s costs depend on the specific service and transaction category, and the customer may not see the merchant’s processing charge as a separate line item.
Why is an instant transfer not free?
Some wallet services offer a slower transfer from an app balance to a linked bank account at no charge, alongside a faster transfer option that carries a fee. The paid option generates revenue by charging for expedited movement of funds. The availability, speed, and price are provider-specific; check the provider’s current terms rather than assuming a universal fee or delivery time. Funding a person-to-person payment with a credit card can also trigger a wallet fee. In some cases, the card issuer may separately classify the transaction as a cash advance, which can mean additional costs under the card’s terms. A payment involving different currencies or countries can create additional fee opportunities. PayPal identifies currency conversion and cross-border transactions among its revenue sources. Its US merchant schedule also adds a percentage-based charge for international commercial transactions to the applicable domestic rate. What other services can bring in revenue?
Wallet businesses may earn money from services beyond routine checkout and transfers. In its annual report for the fiscal year ended December 31, 2024, PayPal lists fees associated with cryptocurrency purchases and sales, as well as miscellaneous fees, among its revenue sources. - Purchase fees: Does the consumer pay, does the merchant pay, or can both be charged?
- Transfers: Is a standard withdrawal free, and what does an instant option cost?
- International use: Are currency conversion or cross-border charges involved?
- Payment funding: Does using a credit card for a person-to-person transfer incur a wallet fee or possible cash-advance treatment by the card issuer?
- Eligibility: Do the terms differ by country, account type, or transaction category?
Read the provider’s current fee schedule for the country and account you use. One provider’s published rates cannot establish the price another wallet will charge.
