How Do Deep-Sea Fish Swallow Prey Larger Than Themselves?

Some deep-sea fish manage oversized meals by combining an unusually wide gape, mobile jaws, teeth or other structures that hold prey in place, and stomachs or body tissues that can stretch around the meal. The black swallower is the clearest example: Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) reports that it can swallow fish up to twice its own length and ten times its weight.

That ratio describes a reported extreme for one species, not a rule for deep-sea fish generally. A large-looking mouth does not prove that a fish routinely eats giant prey; the pelican eel, for example, has an enormous expandable mouth but appears to feed mostly on small crustaceans.

What “larger than themselves” means

“Larger” can describe length, mass, or both. A long, slender prey fish may exceed a predator’s body length while weighing relatively little. A compact, muscular fish may be shorter yet much heavier. Reports about the black swallower use both comparisons: WHOI says the species can ingest fish up to twice its length and ten times its weight. Those are upper examples of swallowing capacity, not an average meal size for deep-sea predators.

Deep water also changes the feeding problem. In the darkness below the sunlit ocean, a predator may encounter food only occasionally. Being able to engulf a large meal can provide a substantial energy return when the opportunity appears. The same adaptation creates a serious risk if the meal is too large to digest before it begins to decay.

The anatomy that makes an oversized meal possible

A wide gape and mobile jaws

The first requirement is room for the prey to pass through the mouth. Some deep-sea fish have mouths that open far wider than their heads appear capable of accommodating. A long lower jaw can increase the opening, while flexible joints and soft tissues allow the mouth cavity to expand around prey instead of acting like a rigid container.

Opening wide is only the entry stage. The jaws must also close around an irregular, struggling fish without pushing it back out. The exact jaw motion differs among lineages, so a mouth that looks similar externally may support very different feeding strategies.

Teeth that let prey enter but resist escape

Oversized prey cannot be held with a simple pinch of the jaws. In the black swallower, the teeth point backward and can retract while the prey is being drawn in. Once the meal is inside, the teeth interlock and act like a one-way retaining barrier. WHOI summarizes the arrangement this way: “Hooked, backwards-pointing teeth retract to make room for prey—and interlock to keep it inside.”

Backward-pointing teeth are mechanically useful because force from a struggling prey tends to drive it deeper into the mouth rather than toward the opening. Retention matters especially when the predator’s jaws must open repeatedly as the prey moves toward the throat.

An expandable stomach and body wall

Even a very wide mouth would not help if the digestive tract were rigid. The black swallower has a balloon-like stomach that can enlarge around a fish much wider than the predator’s normal body profile. Other deep-sea fish also have distensible stomachs or tissues, but the degree and function are species-specific.

Expansion is not the same as unlimited capacity. Stretching the stomach can compress other organs, alter buoyancy and swimming ability, and leave the fish vulnerable while digestion proceeds. A stomach that accommodates a large meal therefore solves one mechanical problem while creating physiological costs.

Moving food from the mouth to the oesophagus

Swallowing is a sequence, not a single bite. The predator first aligns the prey, opens the gape, and draws the prey inward. Teeth, jaw closure and throat movements then prevent backward motion while the prey is passed toward the oesophagus. The available evidence describes the relevant anatomy, but researchers have not documented a complete, high-resolution sequence of a black swallower taking an oversized fish in its natural habitat. The sequence above is therefore an anatomy-based explanation, not a filmed behavioural record.

How the black swallower handles a giant meal

Its mouth, jaw and stomach

WHOI describes the black swallower as having a large mouth, a long lower jaw and a balloon-like stomach. Together, those traits let it engulf prey whole instead of tearing off pieces. The retracting teeth make room during entry, then interlock to hold the prey after the jaws close.

The species is rarely seen in its natural habitat, which WHOI places at about 700–3,000 metres. Much of what is known comes from specimens recovered at the surface. Those specimens have sometimes contained large fish that were barely digested, providing evidence of the capacity and its risks without showing how often the behaviour occurs.

What the reported ratios actually say

Claim What it applies to Qualification
Up to twice the predator’s length Black swallower Reported by WHOI as an upper swallowing example; it is not a cross-species average.
Up to ten times the predator’s weight Black swallower Reported by WHOI alongside the length ratio; it describes an extreme capacity.
About 25 centimetres long Black swallower Approximate length stated by Smithsonian Ocean in its October 2013 explainer; it should not be combined with the WHOI ratios as though both describe one measured specimen.
700–3,000 metres Black swallower habitat context WHOI’s reported depth range where the fish has rarely been seen in its natural habitat.

Why an oversized meal can kill the predator

A large fish in the stomach may take longer to break down than the predator can tolerate. If the meal remains undigested, decomposition can generate gas. Smithsonian Ocean explains that gas can make a dead black swallower buoyant enough to rise toward the surface; this helps account for surface specimens containing conspicuously large, poorly digested prey. WHOI also describes the digestion hazard.

This is not evidence that every black swallower dies after a large meal. It shows that the same anatomy enabling exceptional ingestion has a failure mode: the predator may be unable to process the food before decay changes its buoyancy and condition.

Why the pelican eel’s huge mouth does not prove it eats huge fish

A pouch-like mouth with a different job

The pelican eel, also called a gulper eel, has an extensible lower jaw and a mouth cavity that can expand dramatically. At first glance, that anatomy resembles an adaptation for swallowing a large individual fish. Stomach-content studies and collected specimens point to a different primary diet, however. The National Oceanography Centre says pelican eels mostly eat small crustaceans.

WHOI describes the jaw as scoop-like: the eel can open the mouth around a concentration of shrimp or other small crustaceans, then expel excess water through the gills. The National Oceanography Centre likewise interprets the mouth as a net, allowing the eel to swim into a group of prey, collect it in the expanded cavity, filter water and swallow the remaining animals.

The lesson from the contrast

An expandable mouth tells you that a fish can create volume; it does not tell you whether the volume is used for one giant prey item or many small ones. The black swallower’s hooked teeth and stomach expansion support whole-fish engulfment. The pelican eel’s pouch and water-expulsion route support scooping and filtering. Diet evidence, not mouth shape alone, determines which interpretation is justified.

Other deep-sea examples and what they show

Fish or group Relevant feature What can safely be concluded
Deep-sea anglerfish Some species have stomachs that permit prey larger than the predator. The Natural History Museum identifies expandable stomach capacity as part of their deep-sea feeding adaptations; it does not establish one universal prey ratio for all anglerfish.
Viperfish Large jaws and prominent teeth. The Natural History Museum describes the jaws as useful for catching prey. Large jaws indicate capture potential, not a measured frequency of swallowing prey larger than the predator.
Pelagic saccopharyngiform eels Diverse body forms, diets and expandable anatomy. A 2018 PLOS ONE study documents diversity in this deep-sea eel group. Large-prey claims must remain species-specific rather than being generalized across the group.

A useful comparison outside the deep sea: moray eels

Moray eels demonstrate that fish can use an additional prey-transport system. A 2007 Nature study found that raptorial pharyngeal jaws in the throat can project forward, seize prey and pull it back toward the oesophagus. Morays are not evidence that deep-sea fish generally use this mechanism, but they show why “swallowing” cannot be explained only by the visible jaws at the front of the head. Different fish lineages have evolved different ways to move prey from the mouth into the digestive tract.

What happens during a successful oversized swallow

The following model combines the known structures described for large-prey specialists. It explains the mechanical logic while keeping the evidence limits clear:

  1. Detection and alignment: The predator positions its mouth around the prey. In darkness, the encounter may be brief, so the initial strike must put the prey within the gape.
  2. Gape expansion: The jaws open widely and flexible tissues accommodate the prey’s width. A long lower jaw can increase the opening.
  3. Entry: The prey moves into the mouth while teeth or other retaining structures are positioned to avoid blocking the opening.
  4. Retention: Backward-pointing or interlocking teeth resist escape as the prey struggles and the jaws begin to close.
  5. Throat transport: Jaw and throat movements pass the prey toward the oesophagus. In some fish, specialized internal jaws perform part of this transport; the mechanism is not identical across species.
  6. Stomach expansion: A distensible stomach enlarges around the meal. Digestion then begins, but the time required depends on the prey and the predator’s physiology.

Only the broad anatomical principles are well supported across the examples above. The exact timing, muscle actions and success rate of an oversized swallow in wild deep-sea fish remain difficult to observe because these animals are rarely encountered in place.

Why scientists avoid a single rule for all deep-sea fish

Deep-sea fishes are not one anatomical group. Anglerfish, viperfish, saccopharyngiform eels, black swallowers and pelican eels occupy different branches of the fish family tree and face different prey fields. A shared environment can favour wide mouths or expandable tissues, but those traits may evolve for distinct purposes: engulfing one large fish, collecting a cloud of crustaceans, or simply improving the odds of seizing scarce prey.

No reliable cross-species statistic establishes how often deep-sea fish swallow prey larger than themselves. The black swallower’s reported ratios are therefore best treated as a documented capacity, while the pelican eel demonstrates that dramatic anatomy can accompany a diet of small prey. Statements about typical meals need direct stomach-content, specimen or observation evidence for the species in question.

How to interpret a claim about a “fish that eats prey bigger than itself”

  • Check whether “bigger” means longer, heavier or both.
  • Identify the species; a record for the black swallower cannot be applied to deep-sea fish as a whole.
  • Separate a maximum reported capacity from a typical diet.
  • Look for evidence from stomach contents or specimens rather than inferring diet from mouth size.
  • Ask whether the fish was observed swallowing the prey or whether the conclusion comes from anatomy and a recovered specimen.
  • Consider the cost of the adaptation: an exceptionally large meal can be difficult to digest and may produce dangerous buoyancy changes if it decomposes.

The central mechanism is straightforward: a wide, mobile mouth gets the prey in; retaining teeth or related structures keep it from coming back out; and a stretchable digestive system provides room for the meal. The remarkable ratios belong to particular species and should not be mistaken for a universal deep-sea rule.
