Chromatophores rapidly rearrange visible pigment into spots, bands and patches; reflective cells add optical effects; and muscular papillae rise from the skin to create three-dimensional texture and break up the animal’s outline. These systems work together, but they are anatomically and functionally separable, so a cuttlefish can alter color pattern without making the skin bumpier, or express papillae without changing every pigment pattern.
The short answer: camouflage is a visual-to-skin control loop
A cuttlefish does not simply select a color from a palette. Its eyes detect features such as brightness contrast, the size of light and dark patches, edges, and texture. Neural circuits interpret those features and send commands to skin organs. The resulting display may be a relatively even tone, a stippled or mottled pattern, a high-contrast disruptive pattern, a smoother surface, or a surface covered with raised projections.

Most of the detailed experiments discussed here used the common cuttlefish, Sepia officinalis. The findings show how this species responds to controlled visual scenes; they do not prove that every cuttlefish species has exactly the same skin anatomy, repertoire or control rules.
Which skin structures create the visible color?
Chromatophores expand and contract pigment patches
A chromatophore is an organ built around a pigment-filled sac. Radial muscles pull on the sac. When the muscles are activated by nerves, the sac spreads and exposes more pigment at the skin surface. When the muscles relax, the visible area shrinks. Coordinating many chromatophores produces dots, stripes, bars, clouds and other patterns that can change quickly.

This is a change in exposed area, not a magical conversion of one pigment into every possible hue. The chromatophore organs provide much of the fast, high-contrast patterning, while other skin layers affect the final appearance. Neural-control research on cephalopods describes very rapid chromatophore activation and coordinated pattern control, but the exact timing depends on the species, body region and experimental conditions. It is safer to describe the response as rapid than to assign one universal speed to all cuttlefish.
Reflective cells add color and brightness
Under and among the pigment organs are reflective layers, including iridophores. Their structural arrangement reflects light and can add colors or sheen that pigments alone cannot provide. A 2023 review describes a comparatively limited pigment palette centered on yellow, red and brown, expanded by structural color from iridophores and reflectin-based materials.
That combination explains why a cuttlefish can look silvery, bluish, greenish or otherwise different under changing illumination without possessing a separate pigment sac for every apparent color. What an observer sees is the product of pigment coverage, reflected light, viewing angle and the surrounding light field. “Changing color” therefore includes changing pattern and brightness as well as changing the relative contribution of reflective layers.

How do cuttlefish change physical texture?
Papillae rise as muscular skin projections
Papillae are muscular projections in the skin. When they are expressed, they form bumps, ridges or other relief that makes the body look rougher and can imitate nearby rocks, algae, rubble or sand-like irregularity. When they retract, the surface becomes smoother and the body outline is less broken up.
Nine distinct sets of papillae were described — Allen and colleagues, 2009 — in Sepia officinalis. That is a count for the species and anatomy examined in that study, not a claim that every cuttlefish has nine identical sets.

Neural circuits can hold a papilla in position
Work published in 2018 identified motoneurons and neurotransmitters involved in papilla activation and relaxation. The papillae can be expressed and retracted quickly, yet they can also maintain tension for a period without requiring continuous neural firing at the same level. This combination lets the animal make a fast adjustment and then hold a textured silhouette while it remains in a scene.
Papillae and chromatophores have distinct control circuits and can be activated separately in experiments. That separation matters: a cuttlefish is not limited to an all-or-nothing “camouflage mode.” It can tune color pattern and three-dimensional relief as related but different outputs.
How the main camouflage mechanisms compare
| Mechanism | What changes | Main camouflage role | What the evidence does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chromatophores | Visible pigment area and pattern | Creates rapid patches, spots, bands and disruptive contrasts | Chromatophores alone do not explain reflective or structural color |
| Iridophores and other reflective layers | Reflected light and structural color | Adds optical effects, brightness and hue shifts to the pigment display | They should not be described as an unlimited pigment palette |
| Papillae | Three-dimensional skin relief and silhouette | Breaks the outline and imitates fine surface texture | Some papilla-group responses remain incompletely resolved |
What does a cuttlefish actually see before it changes?
Contrast and spatial scale
Experiments with controlled substrates found that background contrast and the size of visual checks affected whether common cuttlefish produced relatively uniform, mottle or disruptive body patterns. The animal is therefore responding to spatial scale: a scene made of broad regions can call for a different display from one made of small, high-frequency marks.
These results do not mean that the cuttlefish copies every pixel of a background. They show sensitivity to visual statistics that are useful for hiding an outline at the distances and viewing conditions tested.
Edges can trigger disruptive patterning
In edge experiments, isolated boundaries were sufficient to elicit disruptive patterning. A sharp transition in the visual field can be more informative than the average brightness of the whole background, because a predator’s eye may use edges to detect an object’s contour.

Texture can be detected without a brightness difference
Research on visual texture showed that common cuttlefish could distinguish texture-defined objects even when the objects had the same mean luminance as their background. In other words, a camouflage decision can depend on the arrangement and variation of light, not only on whether one region is simply brighter or darker overall.

In the 2009 study, presenting substrates visually elicited papilla responses; physical contact with the substrate was not required for the tested responses. This supports a visual control loop rather than the idea that the animal must feel a surface before deciding how rough to make its skin. The authors also reported irregular responses in some papilla groups, so not every papilla type should be portrayed as fully understood or perfectly predictable.
What happens from scene to camouflage?
- Light enters the eyes. The cuttlefish receives information about brightness, contrast, edges, spatial scale and texture in the scene around it.
- Visual features are processed. Neural systems classify the scene’s useful properties rather than producing a conscious, pixel-for-pixel copy. Experimental studies identify responses to particular features, not a complete map of every computation.
- Pattern commands are sent to the skin. Motor pathways activate selected chromatophores, changing the size and arrangement of visible pigment patches.
- Reflective contributions alter the optical result. Iridophores and related layers reflect available light, modifying hue, brightness and sheen alongside the pigment display.
- Papillae are raised, shaped or retracted. Separate motor circuits alter the surface relief and silhouette, allowing the skin to look smoother or more like a textured object nearby.
- The display is held or adjusted. Papilla muscle tension can sustain a configuration, while continuing visual input allows the animal to modify the pattern if the scene or its position changes.
This sequence is a functional description of the observed mechanisms, not evidence that a cuttlefish consciously plans each step. The experiments demonstrate stimulus-linked neural and skin responses; they do not settle questions about subjective experience.
How color patterns and textures work together
Uniform or stippled displays
Against a relatively even background, a cuttlefish may produce a more uniform appearance or fine stippling. The goal is not necessarily to match one exact color, but to keep the animal’s overall visual statistics close to those of the scene.
Mottle patterns
Mottling uses patches of different sizes and intensities. It can fit backgrounds with intermediate variation where a single tone would leave a conspicuous shape but a strongly disruptive pattern would be too extreme.

Disruptive patterns and outline breaking
Disruptive displays use strong patches or bands that interrupt the apparent body boundary. Raised papillae can reinforce this effect by adding physical peaks and valleys, making the outline harder to trace and reducing the impression of a smooth, animal-shaped object.
Texture matching
On a visually complex surface, papillae add a three-dimensional component that pigment alone cannot supply. A rough-looking animal can be less conspicuous among irregular objects than a smooth one with a similar average color. The match is an approximation based on detected features, not proof of perfect imitation of every natural texture.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does lighting change the camouflage response?
Yes, under the conditions tested in recent experiments. A 2025 study reported papilla expression associated with contrast from object features and with dynamic caustic lighting—moving patterns of light produced when illumination is focused or refracted by a surface. This finding shows that illumination can contribute to the visual contrast relevant to three-dimensional camouflage.
It should not be generalized into a rule that every change in lighting always produces the same papilla response. The result comes from specific experimental conditions, and natural scenes contain many combinations of light direction, motion, texture and background structure.

What cuttlefish camouflage cannot do, based on current evidence
- It is not unlimited color manufacture. Pigments provide a limited base palette; reflective structures contribute substantially to the appearance.
- It is not one single “color cell.” Chromatophores, reflective layers and papillae are different structures with different jobs.
- It is not guaranteed perfect background copying. Studies show responses to contrast, scale, edges and texture, not flawless matching to every detail of a natural scene.
- It does not require touching the substrate in the tested papilla experiments. Visual presentation alone elicited the measured responses.
- It is not fully mapped for every papilla group or species. Some responses were irregular, and much of the evidence concerns Sepia officinalis.
- It is not evidence of conscious, human-like planning. Neural control linked to visual features is established; subjective intention is not demonstrated by these experiments.
Why using both color and texture is so effective
Predators can detect an object through several channels at once. A cuttlefish that changes only pigment may still cast a recognizable smooth silhouette. One that raises papillae without altering contrast may retain an obvious color block. Coordinating the two lets the animal address both the two-dimensional image and the three-dimensional boundary.
Best Value
The division of labor also makes the response flexible. Chromatophores can rearrange visible patches while papillae remain flat, or papillae can rise while the pigment pattern is controlled separately. Reflective layers then modify how the combined display looks under the available light. This modularity is why “changing color” and “changing texture” should be explained as coordinated mechanisms rather than as synonyms.
How scientists know these mechanisms are separate
Researchers combine anatomical descriptions, visual experiments and neural studies. The 2009 work linked visually presented substrates to papilla expression and documented nine papilla sets in the common cuttlefish. The 2018 study examined the neural and muscular control that allows papillae to rise, relax and hold tension, and reported separable papilla and chromatophore control. Pattern experiments tested contrast, check size, edges and texture under controlled conditions. Reviews integrate these findings with the optical roles of chromatophores and iridophores.
Together, the evidence supports a layered explanation: visual analysis guides neural commands; chromatophores set much of the pigment pattern; reflective cells shape the light returned to an observer; and papillae alter relief and outline. Each layer is supported by experiments, while the exact decision rules used in a free-swimming animal in every natural habitat remain an active scientific question.

“Cuttlefish change color only by opening pigment sacs.”
Opening and closing chromatophores is central to rapid pattern change, but it is only part of the optical system. Reflective layers contribute to the final color and brightness, so pigment area alone cannot explain the entire display.
“The skin becomes textured because it touches the background.”
Visual substrate presentations produced papilla responses in the cited experiments without requiring tactile contact. Touch may matter in other contexts, but it was not necessary for those tested responses.
“Every papilla rises in a perfectly predictable way.”
Different papilla groups can respond differently, and irregular responses were reported. The broad mechanism is clear—muscular projections alter the skin surface—but the detailed mapping is not complete.
“Camouflage means an exact copy of the background.”
The experiments instead show sensitivity to measurable visual properties such as contrast, spatial scale, edges, texture and, under tested conditions, dynamic illumination. Those cues can produce an effective approximation without requiring exact replication.
Bottom line
Cuttlefish camouflage is a coordinated, visually guided skin display. Chromatophores rapidly rearrange pigment; iridophores and other reflective layers add structural optical effects; and independently controlled papillae reshape the skin and silhouette. By combining these mechanisms in response to contrast, scale, edges, texture and illumination, a cuttlefish can become less conspicuous without relying on a limitless palette or a perfect copy of its surroundings.
