How Do Astronomers Pinpoint the Source of a Fast Radio Burst?

Astronomers locate a fast radio burst (FRB) in stages: a survey telescope first records the burst and an initial sky region, separated antennas then refine the position through interferometry, and optical or infrared observations identify a possible host galaxy. Dispersion measure helps test distances along the line of sight, but it is not a coordinate and cannot identify a galaxy by itself.

What “pinpointing” an FRB actually means

An FRB is a short-lived radio pulse. Because it vanishes almost immediately, astronomers cannot simply point a telescope at it after the fact and expect to see the burst again. The first observation therefore has two jobs: capture the pulse and preserve enough timing and telescope information to estimate where it came from.

There are several different results that are often compressed into the single phrase “the source was found”:

  • A discovery position: the direction and uncertainty region supplied by the detecting survey.
  • A refined radio position: a much smaller error ellipse or contour measured with an interferometric array.
  • A host-galaxy association: a galaxy whose location, distance and environment are consistent with the radio position and other evidence.
  • A redshift and distance estimate: usually obtained from optical spectroscopy of the candidate galaxy.

A galaxy inside a broad error region is only a candidate. Even a very precise radio coordinate does not guarantee that a visible host will be found: the galaxy may be faint, distant or hidden among unrelated objects.

Step 1: A survey catches the burst and records its first position

Wide-field radio surveys continuously search many beams and frequency channels for a brief signal. When a pipeline identifies a pulse, it records the arrival time, the frequencies in which the pulse appeared and which beam or antennas detected it. Those metadata produce an initial direction and an uncertainty region.

The first position is deliberately a compromise. A survey designed to watch a large fraction of the sky can discover a burst without knowing when or where it will occur, but each beam covers a relatively large angle. The result may be an elongated contour or an area spanning many arcminutes rather than a single useful coordinate.

What the CHIME/FRB example shows

CHIME/FRB Catalog 1 illustrates how a catalog should report such a result. The instrument used four cylindrical reflectors measuring 20 by 100 metres and operated from 400 to 800 MHz. Its catalog lists central coordinates, approximate uncertainties and localization contours derived from real-time pipeline metadata. Those dimensions and frequencies describe the Catalog 1 instrument and its publication era, not every later configuration or every FRB survey.

The important point is the reporting style: a position is accompanied by its uncertainty. Saying that a burst occurred “in” a particular galaxy before that uncertainty is considered can turn a rough direction into an unjustified identification.

Step 2: Interferometry turns a broad direction into a precise coordinate

To improve the position, astronomers combine recordings from antennas separated by known distances. The same wavefront reaches each antenna at slightly different times and phases. Comparing those differences constrains the incoming direction much more tightly than a single dish or one survey beam can.

How the measurement works

  1. Record the signal at multiple antennas. Each station keeps synchronized timing information and a copy of the radio data.
  2. Align the recordings for trial directions. A computer applies the delays expected if the burst came from each possible point on the sky.
  3. Find the direction that produces the best match. When the trial delays are correct, the signals add coherently; incorrect directions do not reinforce as strongly.
  4. Calculate an error region. Calibration quality, signal strength, antenna geometry and timing determine the size and shape of the resulting error ellipse or contour.

Many early single-dish detections had positions uncertain by a few arcminutes. A robust host association generally benefits from a position at the few-arcsecond level or better. Very-long-baseline interferometry (VLBI), which uses extremely widely separated antennas, can reduce the uncertainty further when the data and observing setup support it.

Why the burst must be captured at high resolution

Interferometry cannot recover information that was never recorded. A one-off FRB must be detected while the array is collecting suitably time-resolved data, or it must produce a detectable counterpart that can be tied to the radio event. A repeating source is easier to target: once its approximate position is known, an array can monitor that region and wait for another burst.

The first direct high-time-resolution interferometric imaging of FRB 121102 was a landmark example. Repeated bursts allowed astronomers to place the source in a compact region and then connect it to a dwarf galaxy more than three billion light-years away.

Step 3: Use dispersion measure as a distance clue, not a sky coordinate

Radio waves at different frequencies travel through ionized material at different speeds. The resulting frequency-dependent delay is summarized by the dispersion measure (DM), which represents the integrated column of free electrons along the line of sight.

A measured DM can be compared with an estimate of the Milky Way’s contribution. If the total is larger than the expected Galactic foreground, the excess supports an extragalactic origin. Astronomers then consider possible contributions from intergalactic space and the FRB’s host environment when judging plausible distances.

DM does not point east, west, north or south. It is a line-of-sight quantity, so different galaxies at different distances can produce compatible values if their surrounding gas differs. Uncertainty in the Milky Way model, the intergalactic medium and the host galaxy means DM alone cannot select a unique host.

How DM narrows a host search

Once a radio error region exists, astronomers use DM as a consistency filter. A galaxy whose estimated distance would require an implausible electron column can be deprioritized. A galaxy with a compatible distance remains a candidate; it is not confirmed until the positional and physical evidence is convincing.

Step 4: Search optical and infrared images at the radio position

With a refined coordinate, teams inspect deep optical or infrared images for galaxies inside or near the radio error ellipse. Better radio localization reduces the number of unrelated galaxies that overlap the search area. This is why a few-arcsecond position can be scientifically transformative compared with a broad survey contour.

The search is not limited to the galaxy whose center lies closest to the coordinate. Astronomers examine the full uncertainty region, account for the burst’s offset from a galaxy’s visible center and consider whether a faint or diffuse object could have been missed in a shallow image.

Spectroscopy supplies the redshift

Imaging shows where a galaxy is; spectroscopy measures how its spectral lines are shifted, yielding a redshift. That redshift provides an independent distance estimate that can be compared with the FRB’s DM and with the geometry of the radio localization.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A convincing association therefore combines several tests: the galaxy must lie within the radio uncertainty, its redshift must be compatible with the dispersion-based distance range, and the probability of an unrelated galaxy appearing there must be acceptably small. If several galaxies survive those tests, the result should remain “candidate” or “most likely,” not “definitive.”

What determines the quality of an FRB localization?

Factor What it improves Limitation
Wide-field survey coverage Chance of detecting an FRB without advance warning Initial beam positions can cover large areas
Multiple separated antennas Angular precision through arrival-time and phase differences Requires synchronized recordings, calibration and suitable data capture
Repeating emission Opportunities to schedule targeted high-resolution observations A one-off burst may never recur during follow-up
Optical/infrared imaging Reveals galaxies inside the radio error region Faint or distant hosts can remain undetected
Optical spectroscopy Measures a candidate host’s redshift Requires a sufficiently bright target and telescope time
Dispersion measure Checks whether candidate distances are plausible Uncertain intervening and host-galaxy electron contributions prevent unique identification

Case study: FRB 171020 and a large candidate field

ASKAP localized FRB 171020 to a region measuring 50 by 34 arcminutes, according to ESO’s 2018 account. Hundreds of galaxies lay in that area, far too many for a positional association alone.

Researchers used the burst’s DM to narrow the plausible candidates to 16 galaxies. They then used the Very Large Telescope’s X-shooter spectrograph to examine the candidates. ESO reported ESO 601-G036 as the most likely host. The wording matters: the process reduced a crowded field to a leading association, rather than proving that every other galaxy was impossible.

Case study: FRB 121102 and the power of repetition

FRB 121102 demonstrated why repeaters are valuable. Repeated bursts gave observers additional chances to capture the source with high-time-resolution radio interferometry. Direct imaging supplied a precise radio location, which enabled optical observations to identify a dwarf-galaxy environment more than three billion light-years away.

“We now know that this particular burst comes from a dwarf galaxy more than three billion light-years from Earth.”

— Stuart Ryder, quoted by NRAO

Shami Chatterjee of Cornell University, also quoted by NRAO, described finding the host and its distance as “a big step forward,” while noting that the result did not by itself explain what FRBs are. Localization turns a transient signal into an astrophysical setting; it does not solve the source-physics question on its own.

Case study: FRB 150418 and combining redshift with DM

A Nature paper on FRB 150418 reported a fading radio transient lasting about six days and a proposed host at redshift z = 0.492 ± 0.008. The analysis combined the reported redshift and the burst’s dispersion measure to estimate the cosmic density of ionized baryons.

This is an example of what a host redshift adds: it supplies a distance anchor that DM alone lacks. The identification route depended on associating the fading radio transient with the proposed host, so the case should be described as the paper’s reported host-identification method rather than as a universal procedure for every FRB.

Case study: FRB 20220610A and a distant host

ESO reported that ASKAP localized FRB 20220610A and that follow-up with the Very Large Telescope identified its host. ESO said the host’s light had traveled about eight billion years to reach Earth. That was the framing in ESO’s 2023 report; it should not be restated as a guaranteed current distance record, because records can change as new bursts are localized.

The sequence remains representative: a wide-field discovery, a radio position narrow enough for host work, optical imaging and spectroscopy, and a distance interpretation that combines the host measurement with the burst’s radio properties.

Case study: FRB 20190208A and VLBI precision

A 2024 paper reported that a single burst from FRB 20190208A was found during 65.6 hours of European VLBI Network monitoring. The resulting position had an uncertainty of 260 milliarcseconds at 2 sigma.

This illustrates both the power and the cost of high precision. Monitoring a repeating source for many hours can eventually capture a burst in the right data stream, after which VLBI can deliver a position far smaller than a typical survey beam. The quoted uncertainty belongs to that observation and confidence level; it is not a universal accuracy for all EVN or FRB measurements.

How astronomers decide whether a host association is convincing

  1. Check the radio contour. The proposed galaxy must be evaluated against the full reported uncertainty, not just the best-fit coordinate.
  2. Estimate chance alignment. A bright galaxy in a huge error region is less persuasive than the same galaxy inside a very small, well-calibrated contour.
  3. Compare the redshift with DM. The distance must be compatible with plausible Milky Way, intergalactic and host-galaxy electron columns.
  4. Examine the host environment. Offset from the galaxy center, morphology and local radio or optical features can help distinguish alternatives, but they do not erase positional uncertainty.
  5. State the confidence level. Reports should distinguish a measured coordinate, a candidate host and a most-likely association.

This discipline prevents a common error: treating “a galaxy lies in the error region” as equivalent to “the FRB came from that galaxy.”

The complete localization chain at a glance

Stage Primary output Question it answers
Survey detection Arrival time, beam or antenna metadata, broad coordinates Where on the sky should follow-up look?
Interferometric refinement Best-fit radio coordinate and uncertainty contour Which small patch of sky contains the burst?
DM analysis Plausible line-of-sight distance range Which candidate distances are consistent with the ionized material?
Optical/infrared imaging List of galaxies in the radio region What possible hosts are present?
Spectroscopy Candidate-galaxy redshift How far away is each plausible host?
Association analysis Confidence-ranked host interpretation Which galaxy, if any, is the most likely source environment?

What a careful FRB report should include

  • The facility and observing mode that produced the position.
  • The best-fit coordinates and the size, shape and confidence level of the uncertainty region.
  • The burst’s dispersion measure and the assumptions used to interpret it.
  • Whether the source repeated or was seen only once.
  • The imaging and spectroscopic observations used to evaluate host galaxies.
  • Whether the result is a confirmed association, a candidate or merely the most likely option.
  • The publication date when describing records, instrument specifications or historical milestones.

That level of detail lets readers separate a measured radio location from the more interpretive step of assigning a host galaxy.

Bottom line

Astronomers pinpoint an FRB by combining independent clues rather than relying on one measurement. A survey catches the pulse and supplies a broad sky region; interferometry uses timing and phase differences across separated antennas to shrink that region; DM checks plausible distances through the ionized material along the path; and optical or infrared imaging plus spectroscopy links the refined coordinate to a galaxy and its redshift. Repetition makes the process easier by providing more chances for targeted high-resolution observations, while one-off bursts demand that the necessary radio data be captured at discovery. The final result is strongest when every coordinate, uncertainty and host claim is reported separately and explicitly.
