They publish deprecation notices, migration guidance, replacement options, and shutdown dates; developers must monitor those notices and test changes against their own applications.
What backward compatibility means for an AI API
Compatibility can refer to several different things: whether a request endpoint still accepts the same parameters, whether a response keeps the same structure, whether an SDK continues to work, or whether a model produces sufficiently similar results. These are related but distinct. An API call may remain valid while a model update changes its behavior; a schema change may break response parsing even if the model itself is unchanged.
Policies are provider-specific rather than an industry-wide guarantee. The official OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google materials reviewed on October 4, 2026 describe their own policies and examples; they do not establish a cross-provider rate of breaking changes or migration failures.
How the providers describe compatibility and change
| Provider | What its official guidance covers | What developers should take from it |
|---|---|---|
| OpenAI | OpenAI says it aims to avoid breaking changes in major API versions where reasonably possible. Its documentation also notes that prompting behavior can change between model snapshots. It publishes model deprecations, minimum notice periods, shutdown dates, and suggested replacements. OpenAI deprecation policy | Watch both API changes and model lifecycle notices. A callable API does not guarantee identical model behavior. |
| Anthropic | Anthropic publishes model deprecation schedules, recommends migrating and testing before retirement, and says partner-hosted schedules on Amazon Bedrock and Google Cloud can differ from Anthropic-operated platforms. Anthropic model deprecations | Check the schedule for the platform that actually serves the model, not only the model creator’s schedule; test replacements on your application’s tasks. |
| Google Gemini API | Google release notes document model and API changes. For the Interactions API, Google staged a schema change through an opt-in period, a default change, and sunset of the legacy schema. Gemini API release notes Interactions API migration guide | A staged transition provides time to adapt, not permanent support for old parsing or SDK behavior. |
What deprecation notices and deadlines actually mean
A deprecation notice is a signal to plan a migration, not a promise that the old version will remain available indefinitely. OpenAI’s policy, as reviewed October 4, 2026, specifies at least six months’ notice for generally available models and at least three months for specialized variants, with an exception when safety or compliance requires a faster timeline. It also lists shutdown dates and suggested replacements. OpenAI deprecation policy

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Anthropic advises developers to test replacement models well before a retirement date, because a suggested successor does not establish that it will meet an individual application’s quality or behavior requirements. For services hosted through Amazon Bedrock or Google Cloud, check the host’s own retirement schedule: it may differ from Anthropic’s. Anthropic model deprecations
Google’s 2026 Interactions API migration illustrates how a schema transition can have several dates. The guide set May 7 for opt-in, May 26 for the default flip, and June 8 for the sunset of the legacy schema. It warned that Python and JavaScript SDK 1.x versions would break for Interactions API calls after the sunset, and that the legacy REST schema would be removed. These dates describe that specific migration, not a general Gemini API notice period. Interactions API migration guide

How to keep a production integration working
- Inventory what you depend on. Record each provider, serving platform, model name or snapshot, endpoint, SDK version, request parameters, response fields, and features such as tool calls. This makes it possible to match a notice to the affected parts of your application.
- Monitor the relevant official pages. Track provider changelogs and deprecation pages for every model, endpoint, and feature in production. Include the cloud or partner platform that serves the model, since its lifecycle schedule may not match the model creator’s.
- Pin snapshots when reproducibility matters. A pinned model snapshot can reduce unintended drift, but pinning does not prevent eventual deprecation or shutdown. Treat it as a way to control change timing, not as a permanent compatibility guarantee.
- Test the contract as well as the output. Integration tests should cover request parameters, response shape, tool calls, errors, and downstream assumptions. For a model replacement, compare representative application tasks and the quality criteria your product actually requires.
- Complete migrations before the cutoff. Update SDK versions and response parsing, exercise the new schema in a test or staging environment, and verify the production path before the legacy endpoint, schema, or model is retired.
What a provider’s replacement recommendation does—and does not—tell you
A recommended replacement is a useful starting point for migration planning; it is not proof of behavioral equivalence for your workload. Model behavior can matter even when the request and response formats remain compatible. Compare the replacement on representative prompts, tool use, error handling, and other outcomes your application depends on before routing production traffic to it.
Likewise, a compatibility statement usually has a defined scope. OpenAI’s aim to avoid breaking changes in major API versions is qualified by “where reasonably possible,” while its guidance recognizes that model prompting behavior can change between snapshots. Read model lifecycle and API-version notices separately rather than treating either as a blanket promise. OpenAI deprecation policy
