Researchers design strands to fold into precise shapes, then use those shapes to position metals, polymers, graphene or carbon nanotubes at nanometre-scale locations.
A 2026 laboratory prototype shows a second route: synthetic DNA embedded with silver nanoparticles works inside a hybrid perovskite memristor. Its reported low-voltage switching is promising, but it remains a research device rather than a commercial memory product.

How can DNA be used in nanoelectronics?
DNA offers something conventional lithography finds difficult: programmable self-assembly. By changing the nucleotide sequences, scientists can make strands recognize one another and fold into a predetermined object. The resulting structure can act as a scaffold, mask, mold or placement jig for electronic materials.
The method most associated with this work is DNA origami. A long scaffold strand is folded by many shorter staple strands into a designed geometry. A 2021 Nature Reviews Methods Primers article describes structures from tens of nanometres to sub-micrometre dimensions and surveys their use in nanofabrication and nanoelectronics. The geometry is set in the sequence design before assembly, so researchers can place binding sites at planned coordinates rather than patterning every feature directly with a top-down tool.

A typical DNA-templated fabrication sequence
- Design the geometry. Computer models specify the scaffold path, staple strands and attachment points. Shapes can be flat, tubular, three-dimensional or arranged as repeating units.
- Fold and purify the structure. The DNA components are mixed under conditions that allow the staples to bind the scaffold. Excess strands and malformed structures are removed before device fabrication.
- Add chemical handles. Selected staples can carry binding groups for metal ions, nanoparticles, polymers, graphene or carbon nanotubes. The location of each handle is part of the design.
- Assemble the electronic material. Researchers may bind pre-made particles, grow a material along the DNA, or metallize the DNA pattern. DNA–metal, DNA–polymer and DNA–carbon-nanotube assemblies are all represented in the literature.
- Place or transfer the pattern. The decorated structures can be deposited on a substrate, used as a mold, or converted into a pattern that is transferred to another surface. One reported strategy transfers metallized DNA patterns to graphene.
- Verify structure and function. Atomic-force and electron microscopy check shape and placement. Scanning tunnelling microscopy, conductive atomic-force microscopy and Kelvin probe force microscopy can measure local electrical or surface properties. These instruments characterize a structure; they do not, by themselves, prove that it is a working circuit.
What does DNA contribute, and what supplies the electronic function?
In most proposed devices, DNA provides addressable geometry while another substance carries charge, switches resistance or forms the electrode. That division of labor is essential when interpreting headlines about “DNA electronics.” A DNA shape with a metal attached is not the same thing as a circuit made from DNA alone.
| Approach | DNA’s role | Material responsible for electronic behavior | Evidence described in the literature |
|---|---|---|---|
| DNA as scaffold or template | Positions, spaces or aligns components at designed nanoscale coordinates | Metals, conductive polymers, graphene or carbon nanotubes | Reviews describe DNA–metal, DNA–polymer and DNA–carbon-nanotube assemblies, including nanotube placement and metallized patterns transferred to graphene |
| DNA as part of a hybrid active layer | Forms an engineered composite with functional particles or a host material | A device stack such as a halide perovskite plus silver nanoparticles | A 2026 prototype memristor used a silver-nanoparticle-embedded synthetic DNA composite with a quasi-2D perovskite |
This distinction also prevents a common error: the extraordinary information density of biological DNA storage does not describe the speed, endurance or capacity of an electronic memory cell. Chemical information storage and electronic resistive switching are different technologies with different metrics.
What is DNA origami?
DNA origami is a bottom-up assembly method in which sequence-designed strands fold into a defined nanoscale object. It is not a biological extraction technique and does not mean folding a random sample of genomic DNA. The staple sequences are selected to force the scaffold into the intended shape.

Its attraction for nanoelectronics is spatial control. A researcher can specify where a particle should sit, how far two components should be separated, or which side of a structure should face a substrate. Structures may range from a few tens of nanometres to below a micrometre, according to the methods primer. That scale fills a gap between molecular chemistry and larger lithographic patterns.
DNA origami compared with top-down nanofabrication
| Characteristic | DNA origami and related bottom-up assembly | Top-down nanofabrication |
|---|---|---|
| How features are defined | Base-sequence recognition folds strands into a programmed geometry | Patterning, etching, deposition and transfer remove or add material on a substrate |
| Main advantage | Very specific three-dimensional placement and molecular addressability | Established process control for wafer-scale patterns and device interconnects |
| Typical integration challenge | Aligning many self-assembled objects, maintaining shape and connecting functional materials | Creating complex three-dimensional or molecular-scale features without costly process steps |
| Scale limitation identified by reviews | Object size, structural stability and production throughput | Process complexity, resolution limits and the need for multiple fabrication steps |
The available reviews do not establish a controlled cost, yield or performance advantage for DNA origami over conventional fabrication. The approaches solve different manufacturing problems, and a useful device may combine them: DNA can create a nanoscale pattern while lithography supplies electrodes, contacts and larger-scale wiring.

How do DNA nanostructures help build smaller circuits?
At very small dimensions, placing a component can be harder than making the component itself. A nanotube, nanoparticle or conductive strand may have the right electrical properties but land at a random location. DNA binding sites can act as molecular coordinates, increasing the chance that the component appears where a circuit designer intended.
Reviews from 2020 and 2021 describe several routes:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Nanotube arrangement: DNA structures can capture or organize carbon nanotubes into lines, bundles or defined junctions.
- Metal growth and metallization: Metal ions or nanoparticles bind to DNA, after which chemical growth can produce a conductive pattern.
- Polymer assembly: DNA can organize polymer components or provide a template for a composite material.
- Pattern transfer: A decorated DNA object can leave a metal pattern on a substrate such as graphene, separating molecular placement from the final electronic surface.
Each route still needs a continuous conductive path, controlled interfaces and contacts that can be addressed by external equipment. A visually precise shape is only the first fabrication milestone.
Is DNA a conductor?
DNA can participate in charge transport under some experimental conditions, but the evidence is highly sensitive to sequence, humidity, ionic environment, length, defects, contact geometry and measurement method. Results from one sequence or setup cannot be treated as a universal conductivity value for DNA.
For that reason, the strongest current nanoelectronics case is DNA-assisted assembly rather than ordinary DNA serving as a reliable wire. When a paper reports a DNA-templated metal line or a DNA-containing switching layer, the electronic behavior must be attributed to the complete material stack and its interfaces. Conductive atomic-force microscopy or scanning tunnelling microscopy can reveal local transport, while Kelvin probe force microscopy measures surface-potential variations; none of these measurements turns every DNA molecule into a practical interconnect.

What did the 2026 DNA–perovskite memristor demonstrate?
Keremane and colleagues reported a peer-reviewed prototype in Advanced Functional Materials in 2026. The device combines a quasi-2D organic–inorganic halide perovskite with a silver-nanoparticle-embedded synthetic 22-mer DNA composite. It is a hybrid resistive-switching memory: the DNA composite is part of the active material system, while the perovskite and silver nanoparticles provide the environment in which the device changes between resistance states.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The following figures are measurements reported for that study’s prototype. They are not field-wide benchmarks.
| Metric | Reported result | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Operating voltage | Below 0.1 V | Reported by Keremane et al. for the 2026 prototype |
| Power density | 0.01 W/cm² | Reported device value in the same study |
| Endurance | 10³ cycles | Number of switching cycles reported for the prototype |
| Retention | 4 × 10³ seconds | Reported retention interval for the tested device |
| ON/OFF ratio | Above 10⁵ | Maintained for more than six weeks under ambient conditions |
An ON/OFF ratio above 10⁵ means the measured current in the programmed high-conductance state exceeded the low-conductance state by more than five orders of magnitude under the study’s test protocol. It does not indicate a storage capacity, a read/write speed or a guaranteed lifetime in a production chip. Likewise, a sub-0.1-volt operating value is useful only alongside information about current, switching speed, electrode design and long-term cycling.
No independent replication of those figures is established by the sources available here. The university project description presents integration and further development as continuing objectives, so the result should be read as a promising laboratory demonstration rather than a finished memory technology.
Can DNA make electronic devices?
Yes, if “make” means helping assemble or forming part of a hybrid device. DNA origami can position the materials from which a nanoscale circuit is built, and the 2026 memristor shows that an engineered DNA composite can be incorporated into an active memory stack.

No, if the claim means that ordinary DNA strands can simply be wired into consumer chips. The reviewed evidence does not show routine commercial deployment, a DNA-only processor or a replacement for silicon memory. The 2025 Chemical Communications review identifies scalability, stability and performance as open challenges, while the DNA-origami methods primer emphasizes object size and production scale.

Uniform production
Self-assembly can produce many correctly folded objects, but a manufacturing line also needs a predictable fraction of correctly folded, correctly decorated and correctly positioned objects. Batch-to-batch variation in strand quality, folding conditions and purification can become an electrical yield problem.
Structural and environmental stability
DNA structures respond to temperature, salt concentration, hydration and mechanical handling. A shape that is stable in a buffered laboratory solution may deform during drying, metallization, transfer or operation on a chip. Encapsulation and compatible processing steps must preserve both the DNA and the attached material.
Material continuity and contacts
Nanoparticles separated by tiny gaps do not automatically form a low-resistance wire. Researchers must control particle-to-particle connections, interfaces with graphene or polymers, and the electrodes that connect the nanoscale object to a measurable circuit.

A device containing one carefully placed DNA object is different from an array containing millions. Larger systems need registration marks, compatible substrates, repeatable placement and wiring schemes that do not destroy the self-assembled structures.

Device-level reliability
Endurance, retention, switching speed, operating temperature and failure distributions must be measured across many devices. The single prototype’s 10³-cycle endurance and six-week ambient observation are useful evidence, but they do not establish production lifetime or reliability statistics.
When is DNA templating a sensible research choice?
- Use it when the central problem is positioning nanoparticles, nanotubes or other components with molecular precision.
- Consider a hybrid design when DNA can add useful chemistry or morphology to an established electronic material such as a perovskite.
- Pair DNA assembly with conventional lithography when the project needs macroscopic electrodes, registration and packaging.
- Do not choose it solely because DNA has high biological information density; that property does not predict electronic memory performance.
- Require structural imaging and electrical measurements before calling a DNA pattern a device.
Bed Poudel, co-corresponding author and research professor at Penn State, framed the motivation this way: “As the demand for artificial intelligence (AI) grows, we need a new strategy for low-power, high-storage devices.” That statement explains why hybrid materials are being explored; it is not evidence that the reported prototype has already met commercial requirements.
Where the field stands
DNA shapes are becoming credible tools for bottom-up nanofabrication because their sequences can encode three-dimensional placement. The most defensible near-term role is as a template or scaffold that organizes materials conventional patterning struggles to position. Hybrid devices, including the 2026 DNA–perovskite memristor, extend that role by making DNA part of an active composite.
The gap between a precise molecular object and a manufacturable electronic product remains substantial. Stability, scale, interfaces, reproducibility and array integration will determine whether DNA-assisted fabrication moves beyond laboratory demonstrations. For now, DNA is best understood as a programmable construction technology for nanoelectronics, with selected hybrid devices showing what that construction approach might enable.
