Protect the owner account before anything else: add a passkey or security key when available, or an authenticator app, and store Discord’s one-time backup codes somewhere safe. Then reduce the damage a stolen moderator account could cause by removing unnecessary Administrator access, using narrower roles, adding verification friction that fits your community, and training staff to reject suspicious bot messages, “free” offers and unsolicited links.
Why the owner account needs the strongest protection
A Discord server can be disrupted through two related paths: an attacker can take over the owner’s account, or they can compromise a moderator or administrator and use that account’s permissions to damage the server. The controls are different. Multi-factor authentication (MFA) protects the login itself; role design limits what a compromised staff account can change; verification settings make mass abuse harder; and staff awareness addresses phishing that bypasses good intentions.

Discord’s official guidance describes passkeys as phishing resistant and recommends security keys. It also supports authenticator apps and SMS MFA, although Discord warns that text messages can be intercepted through SIM swapping and says it does not recommend SMS MFA. See Discord’s MFA guidance and its security-key and passkey instructions.

Choose an MFA method you can recover
| Method | What Discord documents | Main security and recovery consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Passkey or security key | Discord calls passkeys phishing resistant and documents security-key registration. Up to 16 security keys or passkeys can be registered. | Authentication uses a device unlock such as a fingerprint, face scan or screen lock. Register more than one device where practical so losing one does not remove your only sign-in method. |
| Authenticator app | The app generates a time-based one-time password; Discord says the code changes every 30 seconds. | You need access to the enrolled app or its backup. Losing the phone without a backup or Discord backup codes can prevent login. |
| SMS | SMS MFA is supported after an authenticator app is set up. | Discord warns that texts can be intercepted and phone numbers can be taken over through SIM swapping, so it does not recommend SMS MFA. |
A USB security key is optional equipment, not a requirement. Compatibility depends on the key, device and operating system; check those details before buying. Passkeys may be device-based or stored in a password manager, and a password manager can also protect backup codes.

Set up passkeys, security keys or an authenticator
- Open Discord and go to User Settings.
- Open Account. On desktop or in a browser, the relevant controls may appear under Password and Authentication; Discord’s passkey article also identifies Security Keys and an Add button.
- Choose Add for a security key or passkey and complete the device prompt. Depending on the device, that prompt may ask for a fingerprint, face scan, screen lock or hardware-key touch.
- If you use an authenticator app instead, select the authenticator option, scan Discord’s QR code or enter its setup key in the app, then enter the current six-digit code to confirm enrollment.
- Register a second passkey or security key if you have another trusted device. Discord says the account can hold up to 16 security keys/passkeys.
Keep your Discord password unique even after enabling MFA. MFA is an additional login challenge; it does not make a reused password safe on other services. If labels differ in your client, use Discord’s current passkey instructions and MFA instructions as the reference.
Make recovery part of the setup
Discord backup codes are single-use credentials. Download them when MFA is enabled and store them in a password manager or a protected, hidden printout. Do not leave them in a public channel, an unencrypted shared document or an inbox that other staff can access.
Discord warns that support cannot restore access if you lose the backup codes. Losing an authenticator phone without a separate authenticator backup or Discord backup codes can also block login. After using a backup code to regain access and reconfigure MFA, generate a fresh set of codes and protect the new set. Treat a used code as permanently invalid.

For a team-owned server, decide who can access recovery material before an emergency. The owner should retain control; moderators should not receive the owner’s backup codes merely because they help run the community.
Reduce the blast radius of a compromised staff account
Discord’s roles and permissions guide calls Administrator the most powerful permission: it grants every permission and bypasses channel restrictions. Discord’s warning is direct: “Administrator is the most powerful role permission. It grants all permissions and bypasses all channel restrictions, so be sure to assign this role with extreme caution.” Give it only to accounts that genuinely require complete control.
Inventory current access
- List every account with Administrator and identify the specific task that supposedly requires it.
- Check whether former moderators, contractors or emergency accounts still have staff roles.
- Remove access as soon as a person no longer needs it, rather than waiting for a periodic cleanup.
Delegate by task
Create roles that match the work: for example, a moderation role for handling member behavior, a support role for answering questions and a content role for managing a limited set of channels. Grant only the permissions each job needs. Avoid bundling unrelated powers for convenience.

Use role hierarchy deliberately
Discord explains that role hierarchy limits which members and roles an account can affect. A person can use Manage Roles only on roles below their own highest role, and only with permissions they themselves possess. Put high-trust roles above routine moderator roles, and make sure no lower role can alter the role that controls its own access. Hierarchy is not a substitute for MFA, but it can prevent one compromised account from changing every other staff role.
Review channel overrides
Administrator bypasses channel restrictions, while narrower permissions can preserve those boundaries. Check private staff, moderation and announcement channels for unnecessary overrides. A moderator who can handle reports does not automatically need access to every private channel or every management function.
Use verification levels to add proportionate friction
Verification levels govern the conditions a member must meet before sending text messages. Discord presents five levels that move from immediate participation to increasingly strict checks:
Rank #4
- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key NFC via USB-A and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.

| Level progression | Requirement described by Discord | Practical trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Lowest | Members can participate immediately. | Lowest onboarding friction, but fewer barriers to newly created or disposable accounts. |
| Verified email | A verified email address is required. | Adds an email step that can deter some throwaway accounts while delaying legitimate newcomers. |
| Email-age check | The account must have had a verified email for a period of time. | Creates more resistance to accounts created shortly before a raid or spam wave. |
| Account and server tenure | The account must meet an account-age condition and have been in the server for a period of time. | More friction for new members, including genuine users joining for a live event. |
| Highest level | A verified phone number is required. Discord says this requirement supersedes the other listed requirements. | Strongest identity hurdle in the documented levels, but it excludes or delays members who cannot or will not verify a phone. |
Discord identifies public servers and indefinitely valid invites as situations where verification can help deter bots and spam accounts that mass-join. It does not publish a numerical percentage showing how much any level reduces account-takeover risk. Choose the lowest level that addresses your abuse pattern, then raise it temporarily or permanently when mass joining becomes a problem. Explain the requirement before members encounter it, and consider accessibility, privacy and regional phone availability.
Where to find the setting
The route varies by server type and client. Discord’s documented desktop/browser paths include Server Settings > Safety Setup for Friend Servers and Safety Setup > DM and Spam Protection for Community Servers. On mobile, the setting appears under Moderation. Labels can change, so confirm the live client’s wording before publishing instructions to members.

Discord also says administrators and moderators with appropriate permissions can send messages regardless of the server’s verification level, so verification does not replace careful staff access management.

Train staff to recognize bot phishing
Discord Trust & Safety says: “If you receive a Direct Message from a bot offering you something, or asking you to click on a link, disregard it!” Its scam and phishing bot guidance says Discord has not created bots that offer free products. A message promising free items, premium access, cryptocurrency, Nitro-like rewards or an urgent verification step is not a reason to click.
- Do not follow an unsolicited “verify your account” link.
- Do not add a bot because a direct message promises a free product or asks for a quick authorization.
- Do not enter your Discord password or MFA code on a page reached from an unexpected message.
- When a bot’s legitimacy is uncertain, contact its developer through a trusted, independently located channel rather than replying to the suspicious message.
- Report suspicious bot contact. If an account is compromised, Discord directs users to its support team.
Write these rules into moderator onboarding and pin them in the private staff channel. A short rule that everyone can apply under pressure is more useful than a long list of hypothetical scams.
What to do when an account or bot looks compromised
- Stop the interaction. Do not click the link, authorize the bot or provide a code.
- Contain permissions. If the affected account is staff, remove its elevated role or temporarily remove the account from the team while the owner investigates.
- Secure the login. The account holder should change the Discord password, confirm MFA methods, remove an unrecognized passkey or security key and regenerate backup codes after recovery.
- Remove the suspicious integration or bot. Do not leave it in the server while waiting for certainty if its origin is clearly deceptive.
- Tell members what happened. Warn them not to trust links or instructions sent from the affected account, without reposting the malicious URL.
- Contact Discord support if access is lost. Keep in mind that Discord says it cannot restore access when backup codes are lost, which is why recovery storage must be prepared before an incident.
After containment, review which role allowed the change and whether another account has the same unnecessary power. Correct the permission design and staff process, not only the individual password.
A maintenance checklist for server owners
- Owner account uses a passkey/security key or authenticator app, with SMS treated as a fallback Discord does not recommend.
- At least one additional trusted sign-in method is registered where practical.
- Backup codes are stored privately, and the owner knows how to replace them after one is used.
- Administrator is limited to accounts that truly need it.
- Staff roles are task-specific, ordered by role hierarchy and removed promptly when access ends.
- Verification level matches the server’s public exposure, abuse pattern and community’s ability to complete the required checks.
- Moderators know to ignore suspicious bot DMs, free-product offers and unsolicited links.
- The team has a written response path for removing compromised access and contacting Discord support.
These controls address different failure points. MFA protects the account, permissions constrain what a stolen account can do, verification slows mass abuse, and training reduces the chance that a staff member hands an attacker the keys.
