Birds are living dinosaurs, descended from theropods, but their brains did not emerge through a single, steady march toward a modern bird pattern. Fossil endocasts show a mosaic transition: some brain regions and some juvenile dinosaurs had bird-like features, while other regions and many mature non-avian dinosaurs remained closer to the alligator pattern. The strongest current evidence therefore compares developmental trajectories, regional shape and relative size separately rather than treating any one measurement as a score for intelligence.
The short answer: bird brains evolved from dinosaur ancestors, but not uniformly
Living birds belong inside the dinosaur family tree. Their closest extinct relatives were theropod dinosaurs, and the avian brain was assembled from ancestral features over a long evolutionary history. That history was not a simple sequence in which every dinosaur brain gradually became more bird-like.

The clearest modern result comes from a 2024 Nature Communications study by Logan King and colleagues. Its comparative sample showed that non-avian dinosaurs followed a developmental endocast trajectory distinct from both crown birds and American alligators. In some sampled dinosaurs, immature individuals had shapes that resembled birds more closely than adults did. As those dinosaurs matured, their overall endocasts often shifted toward an alligator-like pattern.
The result is best described as mosaic evolution. The cerebrum and optic lobes showed more bird-like similarities in the regional analyses, whereas the brainstem more closely matched the alligator pattern. Different parts of the braincase changed at different times and in different directions. A bird-like feature in one region therefore does not mean that the entire dinosaur brain was bird-like.

What fossil endocasts actually measure
Endocasts are internal casts, not preserved brains
Most dinosaur brain evidence comes from an endocast: a reconstruction of the space inside a fossil braincase. The cavity reflects the approximate size and external shape of the brain and some associated structures. Modern scans can create digital endocasts without physically removing the fossil material.
An endocast does not preserve the complete soft-tissue brain. It cannot show every neural connection, the detailed arrangement of neurons, neurotransmitter systems or the actual performance of a behavior. Its contours can suggest broad regional proportions, but they cannot identify a dinosaur’s intelligence directly. The same caution applies to a brain-to-body ratio: a higher ratio is not, by itself, proof of human-like cognition or identical mental abilities.
Why comparisons use birds and alligators
Living birds provide the modern endpoint of the avian lineage, while American alligators provide a living comparison outside the bird-dinosaur branch. Neither comparison is a perfect stand-in for every extinct animal. Instead, the two living groups help researchers ask whether fossil shapes follow a trajectory more similar to modern birds, to the alligator pattern, or to neither.
Development matters because a juvenile and an adult of the same species can have different braincase proportions. Comparing only one growth stage could make an ancestral animal appear more or less bird-like than its full developmental pattern warrants.
What the 2024 study examined
King and coauthors analyzed fossil and living specimens together rather than relying on a single famous dinosaur. The study included 85 endocranial reconstructions representing 52 species. Its interspecific sample contained 36 crown bird species and 19 non-avialan dinosaur species. It also included postnatal growth series for chickens, American alligators and Psittacosaurus lujiatunensis.

How dinosaur and bird brain shapes differ through development
Non-avian dinosaurs had a distinct trajectory
The study’s central conclusion is developmental rather than a single ranking of brain size. The authors state that “the brain of non-avian dinosaurs underwent a distinct developmental trajectory compared to alligators and crown birds.” In practical terms, the sampled non-avian dinosaurs did not simply occupy an earlier point on a straight line leading to the modern bird condition.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSome immature dinosaurs occupied endocast shapes nearer to birds. Mature forms commonly moved toward shapes nearer to alligators. That pattern means that an apparently bird-like juvenile trait could be temporary rather than an adult feature inherited unchanged by later birds.
The transition was regional, not all-or-nothing
When the researchers separated brain regions, the cerebrum and optic lobes showed stronger bird-like similarities than the brainstem. The brainstem retained a pattern closer to the alligator comparison. This does not mean that the dinosaur brain contained a bird cerebrum and an alligator brainstem in a literal anatomical sense. It means that the external shapes inferred from the braincase followed different comparative relationships.
The cerebrum is associated with many higher-order processes in living vertebrates, while the optic lobes are involved in visual processing. Those functional associations do not allow a fossil endocast to reveal a dinosaur’s exact sensory abilities or behavior. They explain why regional comparisons are informative, not why a resemblance should be converted into a claim about intelligence.

Paedomorphosis helps explain part of the pattern
The authors interpret the overall transition as partly consistent with paedomorphosis: adults retain traits that were juvenile-like in their ancestors. The idea fits a case in which some bird-like proportions appear early and persist or become reorganized in a later lineage. However, the study also emphasizes that the signal varies across time and brain region. Paedomorphosis is therefore a partial evolutionary explanation, not a single mechanism that accounts for every feature.

“How bird-like was a dinosaur brain?” has no single numerical answer. The following distinctions keep the evidence from being conflated.
| Comparison axis | What the evidence indicates | What it cannot establish |
|---|---|---|
| Overall endocast shape | Non-avian dinosaurs followed a trajectory distinct from crown birds and alligators; mature sampled forms often moved toward the alligator pattern. | That every dinosaur species shared one adult shape or that shape alone identifies behavior. |
| Cerebrum | Regional analyses found more bird-like similarities in this part of the endocast. | Identical neural circuitry or equivalent cognition in birds and dinosaurs. |
| Optic lobes | These also showed more bird-like similarities in the 2024 analysis. | A complete reconstruction of visual performance. |
| Brainstem | The pattern was closer to the alligator comparison. | That the rest of the brain was alligator-like. |
| Developmental stage | Some immature non-avian dinosaurs appeared more bird-like; adults often shifted toward the alligator-like pattern. | A universal growth rule for all dinosaur lineages. |
| Relative brain size | Must be analyzed independently from shape; studies do not show a single steady increase across the entire transition. | An intelligence score or a direct measure of neural complexity. |
Where early avialans and crown birds fit
Early avialans were intermediate in a branching history
Early avialans—the dinosaur group on the branch leading toward living birds—should not be treated as miniature modern birds. Their anatomy combined ancestral theropod features with traits that later became more characteristic of birds. Endocast shape can therefore look intermediate, regionally bird-like or unlike both modern comparison groups, depending on the taxon and the feature measured.
A 2021 study of neurocranial and body-mass evolution across the end-Cretaceous extinction reported that crown birds developed a distinctive brain shape. Its available summary describes an incomplete Ichthyornis endocast as suggestive of an Archaeopteryx-like shape. Because the Ichthyornis specimen is incomplete, that resemblance should be treated as suggestive rather than a complete reconstruction of the species’ brain.
Crown birds have their own derived condition
Modern birds are not simply representative samples of the average dinosaur brain. They are the surviving crown group of a branch that underwent its own anatomical and developmental changes. Their endocasts provide a reference for the avian condition, but the comparison does not imply that every extinct dinosaur passed through the exact shape seen in a chicken, parrot or hawk.

The 2024 study’s growth series is especially useful here. Chickens and alligators show how endocast shape changes after birth, while the four Psittacosaurus specimens provide a dinosaur growth comparison. The study’s result is a relationship among trajectories, not a claim that one living species reproduces the entire history of birds.

Relative size did not rise steadily with flight or miniaturization
A 2020 study of avian brain-size evolution reported no significant increase in relative brain size accompanying miniaturization or flight along the theropod-to-bird transition. That finding challenges the popular picture of flight automatically producing a steadily larger brain relative to body size.
The result concerns relative size, not every aspect of brain organization. A lineage can alter shape, regional proportions or developmental timing without producing a statistically significant change in the overall brain-to-body ratio.
Similar encephalization indices evolved more than once
A 2013 study found that bird-like encephalization indices evolved multiple times among coelurosaurs. Repeated evolution of a similar ratio shows that comparable relative size can arise independently. It does not demonstrate that the animals had the same neural architecture, sensory priorities or cognitive abilities.

Did flight make dinosaur brains more bird-like?
Flight likely imposed strong demands on coordination, vision and balance, but the available evidence does not support a one-factor explanation in which flight alone caused a continuous increase in relative brain size. The 2020 result found no significant relative-size increase linked to miniaturization or flight across the theropod-bird transition, while the 2013 result showed that bird-like encephalization ratios arose multiple times in coelurosaurs.
Flight should therefore be considered one possible influence among body-size change, sensory specialization, developmental timing and lineage-specific history. A flight-capable animal may have a particular combination of regional proportions without matching the whole endocast of a modern bird.
Why “more evolved” is the wrong comparison
Evolution does not produce a ladder with alligators at the bottom, non-avian dinosaurs in the middle and birds at the top. Each living lineage has its own history, and extinct dinosaurs were not failed versions of birds. The 2024 study found a distinct non-avian dinosaur developmental trajectory, not an inferior one.
Likewise, a larger relative brain does not establish that one animal is universally smarter. Different species can be adapted to different sensory environments, body plans and life histories. A fossil endocast can reveal useful anatomical patterns while leaving many behavioral questions unresolved.
How to interpret a new dinosaur brain discovery
When a new fossil endocast is reported, evaluate it in this order:
- Check preservation. Determine whether the braincase is complete and whether the endocast is measured directly, digitally reconstructed or partly inferred.
- Identify the comparison. Ask whether the study compares the fossil with crown birds, alligators, other dinosaurs or all three.
- Separate age classes. A juvenile specimen should not be treated as an adult representative without growth data.
- Read region by region. Note whether the result concerns the cerebrum, optic lobes, brainstem or overall shape.
- Keep size and shape separate. A brain-to-body ratio and a regional resemblance answer different questions.
- Look for uncertainty. Fossil age, taxonomy, missing bone and reconstruction choices can affect the interpretation.
- Avoid behavioral overreach. Treat claims about intelligence or complex behavior as hypotheses requiring evidence beyond an endocast.
What the evidence still cannot answer
The current record cannot provide one universal brain model for all dinosaurs. Fossil sampling is uneven, some specimens have uncertain ages or taxonomic assignments, and endocasts omit the microscopic and physiological features that shape behavior. A Royal Society review describes dinosaur palaeoneurology as an evolving field whose progress depends on broader fossil sampling and improved comparative methods.
The limits do not make endocasts uninformative. They define the questions they answer well: how braincase shape changed, whether growth trajectories differed, and whether particular regions resemble those of living comparison groups. They answer less directly how an animal learned, planned, communicated or experienced its environment.

Bottom line
Dinosaur brain evolution and bird-brain evolution are connected because birds are surviving theropod dinosaurs, but the transition was neither smooth nor uniform. The best-supported picture is a mosaic: juvenile non-avian dinosaurs could show bird-like endocast traits, mature forms often approached the alligator pattern, and different regions followed different histories. Modern birds possess a distinctive derived brain shape, while brain size, endocast shape and cognition remain separate measures. Fossils reveal the architecture and development of the transition—not a simple ranking of dinosaur intelligence.
