Diesel-electric submarines reduce underwater noise by running on battery power with their diesel engines stopped, then layering quieter equipment, vibration control and careful hull and propulsor design. That makes them harder to hear with passive sonar in some conditions—not silent or impossible to detect.
Why battery power helps underwater
Diesel engines drive generators that recharge a submarine’s batteries. When submerged and operating from stored electricity, an electric motor can propel the boat while the diesel engines are stopped. The propeller does not have to stop: propulsion continues, but a major source of machinery noise is removed.

A U.S. Navy environmental review describes diesel-electric submarines remaining stationary with most machinery shut down, while Australia’s Defence Science and Technology Group describes Collins-class battery banks charged by onboard diesel generators. These sources illustrate the operating principle; they do not establish a sound profile for every class. [Navy environmental review; Australia DSTG]
How engineers reduce noise beyond switching off the diesels
Quieting is not a single device or trick. The Navy’s Carderock Division describes silencing as work to reduce a signature at its source, before it radiates, or by impeding sensor energy. Its technical scope includes machinery vibration, structural acoustics, hydroacoustics and propulsors. [NSWC Carderock: What We Do; NSWC Carderock: Acoustics]

Choose and quiet machinery at the source
Machinery generates vibration as well as sound. Equipment choices and silencing measures aim to limit that vibration at its origin. The Navy describes silencing as developing requirements, technology, materials, equipment and systems to achieve the lowest practical signatures compatible with a vessel’s mission. [NSWC Carderock: Acoustics]
Limit the path from machinery to water
Vibration can pass through supporting structures into the hull, which can then radiate sound into the surrounding water. Isolation and damping can reduce transmission along that path. A Navy-custodied record for MIL-STD-2148 covers vibration-damping materials and their installation, maintenance and repair on submarines and surface ships. The record does not identify the specific treatments used on any particular submarine class. [MIL-STD-2148 record]

Manage flow and propulsor noise
Water moving around the hull and through the propulsor can also produce noise. Carderock identifies hull form, interaction between hull and propulsor, and propeller noise as factors in a platform’s acoustic characteristics; it also describes work on integrated low-noise hull-propulsor designs. The public material does not justify assigning a particular propeller design or acoustic performance to an unnamed submarine. [NSWC Carderock: Acoustics]

Passive sonar listens for sound a target emits. Reducing a submarine’s emitted noise can make passive detection more challenging, but the result depends on the boat’s machinery state and speed, background noise in the water, and the detection method. The Navy puts the point plainly: “The quieter the underwater sound, the more challenging it is to detect.” [U.S. Navy SURTASS LFA sonar information]

Active sonar works differently: it transmits a pulse and detects the echo that returns. Because it does not depend on hearing sound emitted by the target, a quiet submarine may still be detected by active sonar. [U.S. Navy SURTASS LFA sonar information]
Noise changes with operating conditions
Battery operation changes which machinery is running, but it does not eliminate every source of sound. Speed, maneuvering and equipment state affect the noise a vessel produces. A commercial-vessel study illustrates why operating conditions matter, though its result must not be treated as submarine data: MARAD reports that one battery-electric tug had at least 6 dB lower overall underwater radiated noise than two diesel-powered tugs at comparable transit speeds, but its noise during simulated tug-assist operations was similar or louder. This is evidence about those tugs and those study conditions only, not a submarine quieting figure. [MARAD battery-electric tug project summary]

What public information cannot establish
Public official sources explain the broad mechanisms—battery operation, machinery shutdown, vibration control, and hull and propulsor design—but do not provide a reliable submarine-specific decibel figure here. Nor do they support ranking submarine classes by quietness or identifying a particular class’s mounts, propeller or other detailed treatments. Those limits matter: a commercial tug comparison cannot stand in for submarine performance, and a description of a design discipline is not a disclosure of a boat’s acoustic signature.
