Because a diesel engine needs atmospheric oxygen and must discharge exhaust, a conventional boat eventually has to surface or raise a snorkel.
Air-independent propulsion (AIP) adds an underwater energy source—typically a fuel cell or Stirling engine—so the submarine can make electricity without taking in atmospheric air. It extends submerged operation, but it does not create unlimited endurance: stored fuel, oxidizer, reactants, battery energy, speed, hotel loads and the specific AIP installation still set the limit.

What “diesel-electric submarine” actually means
“Diesel-electric” describes the way energy is generated, stored and delivered, not a single engine that drives the propeller directly. The core arrangement has three elements: a diesel-powered electrical generator, a large battery bank and an electric motor connected to the propeller. The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) uses this three-part model in its overview of undersea warfare.

| Component | Function | When it is normally used |
|---|---|---|
| Diesel generator | Burns diesel fuel to produce electricity. It requires oxygen and must discharge exhaust. | On the surface or at snorkel depth, when the boat can obtain air. |
| Battery bank | Stores electrical energy for propulsion and onboard equipment. | Whenever the diesel generator or another source is not directly supplying the required power, especially while submerged. |
| Electric motor and propeller | Converts electrical power into thrust. | Underwater and on the surface; the motor is the submerged boat’s primary propulsion machine. |
| Electrical distribution system | Routes generated or stored power to propulsion, sensors, controls, pumps, lighting and other loads. | Continuously, regardless of whether the boat is charging or discharging its batteries. |
In its simplest cycle, the diesel generator charges the batteries; the batteries feed the motor; and the motor turns the propeller. A submarine can therefore shut down its diesel machinery and move quietly on stored electrical energy, but every ampere-hour used underwater eventually has to be replaced. AIP adds another way to supply electricity; it does not automatically remove the batteries, electric motor or diesel plant.

How does a diesel-electric submarine work underwater?
1. Charging before the dive
At the surface, diesel generators can run continuously or as required by the boat’s electrical load. They supply the propulsion motor, hotel services and battery chargers. The crew uses this period to restore the energy that will be consumed after diving. The amount stored, the battery technology, the battery’s condition and the submarine’s operating plan determine how much submerged work is possible.
2. Switching to battery-electric propulsion
Before submerging, the submarine secures the diesels and closes the air-intake and exhaust arrangements. Power electronics and the motor then draw from the battery bank. There is no combustion air requirement for the electric motor itself, so the boat can remain fully submerged while making way. The motor’s electrical demand rises with speed and with the power needed for pumps, sensors, climate control and other onboard systems.
3. Managing stored energy
The crew balances propulsion against the rest of the electrical load. A slow patrol uses less propulsion power than a high-speed transit, leaving more stored energy for sensors and contingencies. A sprint, maneuver or emergency response consumes energy faster. Battery state of charge is therefore an operational resource rather than a simple distance gauge: two boats with the same battery capacity can have different remaining submerged times if their speeds and onboard loads differ.

When the batteries need replenishment, the submarine must provide the diesels with air and a route for exhaust. It can surface, or it can remain below the surface with a mast—commonly called a snorkel—raised into the atmosphere. The diesels then run generators while the electric drive and other loads are supplied from the electrical system and the batteries are recharged. After charging, the mast is lowered and the boat returns to all-electric submerged operation.
Saab describes diesel-electric submarines as able to remain submerged “for a few days” before they must surface or break the surface with a snorkel. That is a manufacturer description of the conventional constraint, not a universal specification for every class, battery, speed or mission.
Why do submarines need to snorkel?
A snorkel solves the diesel engine’s atmospheric-air problem without requiring the entire hull to emerge. The intake admits combustion air and the exhaust mast carries diesel fumes away. The submarine can continue to use its diesel generators and charge batteries while most of the hull remains underwater.

It is still a compromise. The mast and its sensors must reach the surface, which can increase the chance of detection and restrict operations in rough seas or adverse weather. Diesel machinery also produces mechanical and exhaust signatures that are absent when the boat is operating solely from batteries or an underwater AIP source. The snorkel period is consequently planned around geography, threat conditions, battery state and the amount of energy required.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Surface running: gives the diesels unrestricted access to air but exposes more of the submarine.
- Snorkeling: keeps the pressure hull submerged but places a mast at the surface and requires the submarine to manage intake, exhaust and sea-state limits.
- Battery-only running: avoids an atmospheric connection, but the available time depends on stored energy and power demand.
These modes are not mutually exclusive over a patrol. A conventional boat can alternate between battery propulsion, snorkeling and surface operation as its plan and environment require.
What is air-independent propulsion (AIP)?
AIP is an additional system that supplies energy underwater without drawing atmospheric air. In practical terms, it allows a submerged submarine to generate electricity while its diesel generators remain shut down. The U.S. Office of Naval Research identifies fuel-cell electrochemical conversion among the technologies pursued for undersea power, while Saab identifies Stirling AIP as another submarine option.
“Air-independent” is a description of the input to the power system, not a promise of infinite operation. An AIP boat still has finite stores of fuel, oxidizer or reactants, finite machinery capacity and finite provisions. It also has to manage heat, water, gases, maintenance requirements and the energy used by propulsion and hotel loads. AIP extends the interval between atmospheric recharges; it does not abolish logistics.
How fuel-cell AIP makes electricity
A fuel cell converts chemical energy directly into electricity through an electrochemical reaction rather than burning fuel in a conventional engine. Different submarine designs obtain and store the reactants in different ways, so “fuel-cell AIP” is a family of architectures, not one standard package.
Onboard hydrogen generation: India’s DRDO example
In a 9 March 2021 release, India’s Ministry of Defence reported that the Defence Research and Development Organisation’s Naval Materials Research Laboratory had completed user-specific land-prototype tests of a fuel-cell AIP system. The release says testing covered both endurance and maximum-power modes and that the design generates hydrogen onboard. The report concerns a land prototype and its user-specific tests; it does not by itself establish the performance of a submarine-installed operational system. Read the official release for the milestone as reported at that date.

Reforming diesel fuel: Naval Group’s approach
Naval Group explains a fuel-cell approach in which diesel fuel is reformed to extract hydrogen for the cell. This can use a liquid fuel familiar to a conventional submarine, but the reformer and associated processing equipment become part of the AIP plant. It should not be treated as identical to a system that stores hydrogen directly or produces it through a different chemical route.
Bioethanol and liquid oxygen: Navantia’s S-80 system
Navantia describes the S-80 AIP process as using bioethanol and liquid oxygen to produce hydrogen for a fuel cell. The liquid oxygen supplies the oxidizer while the bioethanol-based process supplies hydrogen to the electrochemical generator. This is a specific S-80 design description, not a recipe shared by every fuel-cell submarine.
Across these examples, the important engineering questions are: where hydrogen comes from, how the oxidizer is stored, what processing equipment is carried, how much electrical power the cell can provide, and how the AIP system connects to the boat’s batteries and distribution network.

How Stirling AIP differs
A Stirling AIP unit is a heat engine. It uses an external heat source and a working gas in a closed cycle to produce mechanical power, which is then converted into electricity or used through the submarine’s electrical drive architecture. Because combustion can occur without taking atmospheric air—using stored oxidizer—the system can operate while submerged.
Stirling and fuel-cell AIP therefore convert energy in different ways: one is a heat engine with moving machinery, while the other is an electrochemical generator. The available sources identify both technologies but do not provide matched measurements that would support a general ranking of them for noise, speed, range, cost or reliability. A meaningful comparison must name the submarine class, installation, operating mode and test conditions.
Where batteries fit when AIP is installed
AIP does not imply that a submarine has abandoned battery-electric propulsion. The battery bank remains useful for starting, maneuvering, high transient loads and periods when the AIP unit is not operating. AIP systems generally provide a comparatively steady source of electrical power; batteries can absorb charging power and deliver bursts that exceed the AIP unit’s preferred output.

The CSIS overview notes that AIP can be combined with advanced lithium-ion battery technologies. That combination illustrates the complementary roles: batteries handle stored-energy propulsion and rapid changes in demand, while AIP supplies additional underwater generation. The exact electrical topology, battery chemistry and control strategy are class-specific and are not established by the sources here.
How long can an AIP submarine stay underwater?
There is no single, defensible number for “an AIP submarine.” The answer must identify a class, its AIP system, speed, mission mode, stored reactants, battery state and onboard loads. Published manufacturer descriptions in the available sources are qualitative and are not independent, controlled comparisons.
| Source and system | Published wording | What the wording does—and does not—establish |
|---|---|---|
| Saab, conventional diesel-electric description | “A few days” submerged before surfacing or snorkeling. | Explains the conventional battery-and-diesel constraint; it is not a specification for every diesel-electric class. |
| Navantia, S-80 AIP | Submerged operation “for weeks rather than days,” with the benefit described at low speed. | A manufacturer capability statement tied to the S-80 and low-speed operation, not a universal endurance figure. |
| India’s DRDO, 2021 land-prototype release | Submerged endurance enhanced “several folds.” | A qualitative claim in a report about land-prototype user-specific tests; no common numerical baseline is supplied. |
Navantia’s phrase refers specifically to the S-80 AIP concept and its low-speed operating regime. It should not be converted into a precise number of days, nor compared directly with Saab’s “few days” as if both were measured in the same test. Likewise, “several folds” in the DRDO release cannot be turned into a percentage or a universal multiplier without a defined baseline and test conditions.
The variables that determine submerged time
- Propulsion speed: faster movement requires substantially more power than a low-speed patrol.
- Battery state and chemistry: the starting charge, usable capacity, age and charging limits affect the energy available before and after AIP operation.
- AIP output: the system’s rated electrical production and its control limits determine how much of the load it can carry continuously.
- Fuel and oxidizer stores: reformer feedstock, hydrogen, bioethanol, diesel, liquid oxygen or other reactants are finite.
- Hotel loads: sensors, pumps, computing, ventilation, environmental control and crew services consume power even when the propeller is turning slowly.
- Operating mode: a low-speed patrol, a high-speed transit, a silent period and an emergency maneuver have different energy budgets.
For these reasons, endurance claims should be read as operating envelopes rather than stopwatch promises. A boat may remain submerged longer at low speed than during a sustained high-speed run, and an AIP system that supports a patrol load may not supply all the power required for a sprint.

Navantia S-80: testing reported in 2026
Navantia reported in a 2026 press release that testing of the AIP system on submarine S-83 began after preceding installation work. The release says the first loading of liquid oxygen and bioethanol was used to produce hydrogen for the fuel cell, and it repeats the S-80 expectation of “weeks rather than days” of submerged operation. The reported milestone is the start of testing; it does not establish that the full test series was complete or independently verify an operational endurance result. The status and wording should therefore be read as a current manufacturer report, not as an independently measured specification.
India’s Kalvari-class integration plan
In February 2023, India’s Ministry of Defence said DRDO’s fuel-cell AIP would “soon be fitted” aboard INS Kalvari. The announcement named DRDO, the Indian Navy, Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited and Naval Group in the effort. It documents a planned integration and collaboration at that date, not proof that installation had been completed. The official announcement is the appropriate source for that dated status.

| February 2023 | Kalvari-class integration | Ministry announcement that the AIP would soon be fitted aboard INS Kalvari. | Integration plan and named participants at that date; completion is not established here. |
| 2026 | Navantia S-83 AIP | Testing began after installation work; initial liquid-oxygen and bioethanol loading reported. | Test start reported by the manufacturer; full-series completion and independent endurance validation are not established. |
A practical way to compare AIP descriptions
When a brochure or news report gives an endurance claim, use the following four axes before drawing a conclusion:
- Conversion method: Is the energy coming from stored battery electricity, a Stirling heat engine or a fuel cell?
- Reactant arrangement: Are hydrogen and oxygen stored directly, generated onboard, or obtained by reforming another fuel?
- Integration: Does the AIP charge the existing battery bank, feed the electrical bus directly, or do both through a defined power-management system?
- Operating regime: Is the claim for low-speed patrol, a particular hotel-load condition, a test profile or an unspecified mission?
If a claim omits those details, it cannot be used as a fair numerical comparison with another class. The gathered sources do not establish matched rankings for endurance, acoustic signature, maximum speed, cost, maintenance burden or reliability across AIP technologies.
Common misconceptions about AIP submarines
“Air-independent” means the boat never needs to surface
No. AIP removes the atmospheric-air requirement for the AIP generator while it is operating. Fuel, oxidizer, food, maintenance, waste handling, battery charging strategy and other mission constraints still matter. AIP extends the submerged interval; it does not make a submarine self-sufficient indefinitely.
An AIP boat is no longer diesel-electric
Usually, AIP is an addition to the conventional architecture. The boat can still have diesel generators for atmospheric charging, batteries for stored energy and an electric motor for propulsion. Calling it “diesel-electric with AIP” describes a hybrid energy arrangement rather than a replacement of every original subsystem.
Every fuel-cell submarine stores hydrogen in the same way
No. The DRDO release describes onboard hydrogen generation, Naval Group describes reforming diesel fuel, and Navantia describes a bioethanol and liquid-oxygen process that produces hydrogen for a fuel cell. Those are materially different reactant and processing arrangements.
“Weeks” and “a few days” are directly comparable specifications
No. “A few days” is Saab’s qualitative description of conventional diesel-electric submerged time, while “weeks rather than days” is Navantia’s S-80 AIP description at low speed. They come from different publishers, systems and conditions, and neither is a universal engineering constant.
What a technically honest answer looks like
A conventional diesel-electric attack submarine dives on battery power, because its diesel generators need atmospheric oxygen. It later surfaces or raises a snorkel to run those generators and recharge. AIP supplies an additional underwater energy source—fuel-cell electrochemistry or a Stirling engine are the examples documented here—so the boat can postpone that atmospheric connection. Batteries and AIP can work together, with the battery handling stored energy and changing loads while AIP provides sustained underwater generation.

The correct endurance answer is therefore conditional, not a single number. Name the submarine and AIP system, state the speed and operating mode, identify whether the figure is a manufacturer claim, prototype milestone or independent test, and preserve the date. Without those qualifications, a precise-sounding duration would imply evidence that has not been established.
