In the ceramic multilayer capacitors (MLCCs) normally placed around microchips, its formulation determines how much capacitance fits in a package and how closely that capacitance holds when voltage, temperature and time change.
Class 2 dielectrics such as X7R and X5R provide high capacitance density for bypassing, smoothing and decoupling. Class 1 C0G/NP0 provides much better stability for timing, tuning, filtering and matching, but usually at lower capacitance density. The correct choice is therefore the part whose effective capacitance remains suitable under your circuit’s actual voltage and temperature—not simply the largest value printed on the case.

What the dielectric controls in an MLCC
An MLCC contains alternating metal electrode layers separated by ceramic dielectric. Capacitance rises with electrode area and dielectric permittivity and falls as the separation between electrodes increases. A high-permittivity ceramic lets the manufacturer obtain a larger nominal capacitance in the same package, while a more temperature-stable ceramic usually provides less capacitance per unit volume.
In this article, “microchip capacitor” means the ceramic capacitors used on a microchip’s power, signal or timing circuitry, especially MLCCs on the board or module. It does not describe an on-die semiconductor capacitor, which uses a different fabrication structure and specification system.

The practical consequence is that dielectric selection affects both capacitance density and capacitance stability. Murata’s class comparison describes Class 1 temperature-compensating ceramics as calcium-zirconate-based, with lower relative dielectric constant, and Class 2 high-dielectric ceramics as barium-titanate-based, with higher capacitance available. These are family-level descriptions; the exact formulation and behavior still depend on the individual component. See Murata’s Class 1 and Class 2 comparison.
Class 1 and Class 2: the central trade-off
| Choice | Manufacturer-described dielectric family | Performance behavior | Typical circuit roles |
|---|---|---|---|
| C0G/NP0 (Class 1) | Temperature-compensating, low relative dielectric constant; Murata describes calcium-zirconate-based material. | Small temperature change and no notable DC-bias or aging effect in the class comparison; lower capacitance density. | Oscillators, timing networks, tuning and filters, coupling, impedance matching. |
| X7R/X5R (Class 2) | High-dielectric, barium-titanate-based material. | Higher capacitance density, but capacitance changes with temperature, applied DC voltage and time-related aging. | Power bypass, smoothing, supply decoupling and some coupling applications. |
The table summarizes classes, not guarantees for every part number. Two capacitors carrying the same dielectric code can differ in package, rated voltage, tolerance, electrode construction and measured effective capacitance. Use the exact manufacturer datasheet and its curves before committing a layout.
Why nominal capacitance is not always operating capacitance
DC-bias derating
Class 2 ceramic capacitance can decrease when a DC voltage is applied. The value printed in a catalog is normally a nominal measurement made under specified test conditions; the capacitance available while the capacitor is biased in your circuit can be lower. Murata explains this behavior in its DC-voltage FAQ.

For a supply-decoupling capacitor, the relevant question is not “Is this a 10 microfarad part?” but “How many microfarads remain at the rail voltage, across the operating temperature range, in this package?” A smaller package or a voltage rating close to the rail can show greater effective-capacitance loss than a physically larger or higher-voltage alternative. Do not infer the amount of loss from the dielectric label alone; read the candidate part’s DC-bias curve.
Temperature behavior
Class 1 dielectrics are temperature compensating, so their capacitance is comparatively stable over the specified temperature range. X5R and X7R are Class 2 materials with larger capacitance changes as temperature moves away from the measurement condition. The designation indicates a defined temperature-performance class, not a promise that the capacitance is constant. Murata’s technical explanation, originally published in 2012 and revised in 2023, describes these temperature characteristics at Temperature characteristics of ceramic capacitors.
Check the manufacturer’s temperature curve together with the allowable capacitance range in your circuit. A power rail may tolerate a broad change if transient impedance remains acceptable; a resonant, filter or timing network may not.

Time-related aging
Class II and III MLCCs can lose capacitance gradually with time. KEMET describes this as aging: a time-related capacitance decrease. Aging is not the same thing as the component reaching the end of its service life or becoming unreliable. The distinction matters because a capacitor can remain physically functional while its capacitance drifts outside a precision circuit’s intended range. KEMET’s Ceramic Capacitor FAQ and Application Guide discusses this behavior.

C0G/NP0 is generally selected when avoiding meaningful dielectric aging is more important than obtaining a very large value in a small case. For an X5R or X7R design, include the manufacturer’s aging specification in the capacitance budget when the circuit must hold its value over years.
Match the dielectric to the circuit function
Use C0G/NP0 when predictability is the requirement
- Oscillators and timing: Frequency depends on capacitance, so voltage, temperature and time stability directly affect accuracy.
- Tuning and filters: A drifting capacitor moves the filter corner or resonant frequency.
- RF matching and coupling: Small value changes can alter impedance and insertion loss.
- Precision signal paths: Stable capacitance helps preserve a designed response across operating conditions.
The trade-off is availability of lower capacitance values or larger packages for the same nominal value. If a design calls for a capacitance that is practical only in a high-dielectric ceramic, calculate the resulting drift rather than assuming a Class 1 substitute exists.

Use X7R or X5R when capacitance density matters
- Power bypass and decoupling: These applications often need substantial capacitance close to a processor, converter or memory device.
- Supply smoothing: A high nominal value in a compact package can reduce low-frequency ripple and support load transients, subject to effective-capacitance checks.
- Non-critical coupling: Class 2 can be suitable when the signal path tolerates capacitance variation.
Do not select X5R or X7R solely because it offers the highest catalog value. Confirm that the remaining capacitance at bias and temperature still meets the circuit’s minimum requirement, and allow for aging where the application is long-lived or tightly specified.
A part-selection workflow that uses real operating conditions
- Define the electrical job. Record whether the capacitor is for decoupling, smoothing, coupling, timing, filtering, tuning or matching. Write down the minimum and maximum capacitance the circuit can tolerate.
- Set the environment. Specify the normal and worst-case DC voltage across the part, AC ripple or signal amplitude, operating temperature range and expected service duration.
- Choose a dielectric family. Start with C0G/NP0 when stability dominates. Start with X7R or X5R when a large value in a small package is the priority, then test whether its variation is acceptable.
- Check effective capacitance. Open the exact part’s DC-bias and temperature curves. Read the capacitance at the actual bias and temperature, not only at the catalog test point. If the curve is unavailable for the exact part, treat the value as unverified rather than substituting a generic class assumption.
- Apply tolerance and aging. Combine the stated initial tolerance with expected temperature change, DC-bias derating and Class 2 aging. Verify that the resulting worst-case range still satisfies the circuit.
- Verify mechanical and electrical ratings. Confirm rated voltage, package size, termination style, capacitance, tolerance, measurement conditions and temperature range in the individual datasheet. Check that the package fits the land pattern and assembly process.
- Review the assembled design. Parasitic inductance, placement and trace length can dominate high-frequency decoupling. Place the chosen capacitor according to the microchip or regulator manufacturer’s layout guidance, then validate rail ripple and transient response on hardware.
How to read the datasheet without being misled by the headline value
| Datasheet item | Question to ask | Why it changes the decision |
|---|---|---|
| Dielectric code | Is it C0G/NP0, X5R, X7R or another family? | Sets the expected balance between density, temperature behavior, bias dependence and aging. |
| Capacitance test condition | At what frequency, AC level, temperature and bias was nominal capacitance measured? | A catalog value measured without your operating bias may not equal in-circuit capacitance. |
| DC-bias curve | What capacitance remains at the applied rail voltage? | Reveals Class 2 derating for the exact part and package. |
| Temperature characteristic | What range and limits apply across the operating temperature? | Shows whether the part stays inside the circuit’s capacitance window. |
| Aging specification | Is time-related drift stated, and for which dielectric class? | Important for long-term accuracy; Class II and III parts can age. |
| Rated voltage and tolerance | Are voltage margin and initial tolerance adequate? | Insufficient margin can increase derating or leave no usable capacitance range. |
Manufacturer selection tools can help expose these curves, but the final check must use data for the exact orderable component. A class label is a screening shortcut, not a substitute for part-level verification.

- Mistake: treating nominal capacitance as guaranteed operating capacitance. Correction: read the DC-bias and temperature curves at worst-case conditions and redesign with a higher voltage rating, larger package or parallel parts if the effective value is too low.
- Mistake: using X7R/X5R in a frequency-setting network without a drift budget. Correction: use C0G/NP0 where the required value is available, or calculate the resulting frequency range with the selected Class 2 part’s bias, temperature and aging data.
- Mistake: assuming every C0G/NP0 part has the same value stability. Correction: verify tolerance, temperature range, package and measurement conditions for the specific part.
- Mistake: ignoring aging because the capacitor is new. Correction: include the manufacturer’s Class II or III aging information in the long-term capacitance budget.
- Mistake: selecting by package size alone. Correction: compare effective capacitance, voltage rating, thermal limits and assembly constraints together; a smaller case may not deliver the required biased capacitance.
- Mistake: confusing capacitance drift with end-of-life failure. Correction: treat aging as a parameter shift and evaluate whether the circuit remains within specification, separately from reliability and lifetime requirements.
Two practical decision examples
Processor or regulator power rail
The circuit usually prioritizes low impedance and enough capacitance in a compact area. Begin with X7R or X5R, then read the selected part’s effective-capacitance curve at the rail voltage and temperature extremes. If the remaining capacitance is below the power-tree requirement, use a higher-voltage or larger package, parallel multiple capacitors, or revise the nominal value. The dielectric decision is successful only when the assembled network meets transient and ripple limits, not when the label shows a large number.

Oscillator, precision filter or RF matching network
Start with C0G/NP0 because predictable capacitance is usually more important than maximum density. Verify the value, tolerance, temperature range and parasitic layout effects. If the required capacitance is unavailable in C0G/NP0, quantify how X7R or X5R bias, temperature and aging would move the circuit’s frequency or impedance before approving the substitution.
What the available evidence does—and does not—support
Manufacturer comparison material establishes the qualitative class trade-offs, but it does not provide one universal numerical derating or aging percentage that applies to every MLCC. A part-specific X7R curve cannot responsibly be generalized to all X7R capacitors. Use the exact manufacturer documentation for the chosen capacitance, voltage, package and temperature range.
That qualification is important when comparing shopping-list descriptions: two listings may share a dielectric code yet have materially different effective capacitance under bias. Record the datasheet revision and the conditions used for your design review so a later component substitution can be checked rather than assumed equivalent.
Bottom line for a microchip capacitor design
Choose the dielectric from the circuit’s job. C0G/NP0 is the stability-oriented choice for oscillation, tuning, filtering, coupling and matching. X7R/X5R is the density-oriented choice for bypass, smoothing and decoupling, provided you account for DC-bias loss, temperature variation and Class 2 aging. The final specification is the capacitance that the exact part delivers in your voltage, temperature and time conditions—not the nominal value printed in a catalog.
