What a full-page screenshot actually does
A normal viewport screenshot records only the pixels currently visible in a browser window. A full-page capture renders the page’s complete scrollable document and returns one image (or a PDF) rather than a series of viewport tiles. The result is useful for visual regression tests, documentation builds, design reviews, archive snapshots and monitoring.

Modern pages complicate this simple description. Images may be lazy-loaded, consent dialogs can obscure content, infinite feeds may have no natural bottom, and bot checks can return something other than the page you intended to test. Reliable automation therefore means controlling the browser state as well as requesting a tall image.
Choose a capture architecture
Local Playwright
Playwright is a practical local starting point. Its page API can set a viewport, capture a full page or one element, mask regions, control animations and return an image buffer. A local browser is the better fit when the site is private, must stay inside your network, or your team already operates Chromium and wants complete deployment control. You are responsible for browser binaries, updates, concurrency, retries and infrastructure.

Automate a full-page screenshot locally with Playwright
1. Install the browser dependency
For a Node.js project, install Playwright and its Chromium build:

The following script waits for the page to settle, scrolls through it to trigger lazy loading, then writes a full-page WebP. Scrolling is explicit because a page can contain images that are requested only when they approach the viewport.

})();Run it with node capture.js. The viewport width is part of the test: responsive layouts, navigation and line wrapping can all change when you choose another width. Use a stable viewport and device scale factor in CI so pixel comparisons are meaningful.
3. Prevent overlays from corrupting the image
Local Playwright does not automatically know which consent dialog, newsletter form or chat launcher should disappear. Add a click or hide step that matches your site, then wait for the overlay to be detached before taking the screenshot. For example, a test may click a button with an accessible name such as “Accept” or inject CSS that sets a known overlay selector to display:none. Keep those selectors in your test configuration rather than scattering them through scripts; a site redesign then requires one update.
4. Bound pages that do not end
An infinite-scroll feed can keep increasing its height while your script is capturing it. Set a maximum scroll distance, stop after a fixed number of iterations, or capture a known element instead. If the page is expected to be finite, assert that its height stops changing before accepting the artifact.
5. Save diagnostics with the image
Record the final URL, viewport, browser version, capture time and HTTP response status beside the file. A screenshot can be visually valid while showing a login page, an error template or a bot challenge. Checking the page title and a required selector before capture catches those failures earlier.

Set the browser state deliberately
Viewport, devices and scale

Choose a selector wait when one component signals readiness, a fixed delay for a known animation, or a network-idle wait when the page has a predictable request pattern. Authenticated and localized pages
Pass custom headers, cookies, a user agent or an Authorization value for authenticated routes. Set timezone and geolocation to reproduce regional rendering. Keep credentials in your secret store and avoid putting sensitive tokens in URLs that may be logged.
Network and visual controls
Block ads, trackers, individual requests or whole resource types when they add noise or delay. Transparent backgrounds and image resizing are available for assets that will be composited elsewhere. Caching lets you choose a TTL; signed links are intended for public <img> tags without exposing the API key.

Rate limits and retries
A request above the rate or concurrency limit returns HTTP 429 with a Retry-After header. Respect that delay, add exponential backoff and cap the number of attempts. Do not retry a deterministic selector or script error indefinitely; fix the page action first.

Cache strategy
Set a TTL that matches the freshness required by your test. A cache hit is not billed, but it also cannot prove that the origin changed after your last capture. Disable or shorten the TTL for release verification; use a longer TTL for stable documentation assets.

Estimate usage from URLs multiplied by capture frequency, then add retries only for transient failures. Because failed loads, bot checks, blank pages, timeouts and cache hits are not billed, monitor the X-Billed value rather than assuming every request consumes a shot. Recheck the plan page before committing to a long-term budget because quotas and prices can change.
Troubleshooting full-page captures
The image stops before the bottom
- Confirm
full_page=trueis present and spelled exactly. - For lazy content, add
full_page_scroll=trueor use a Playwright scroll loop. - Check whether
full_page_max_heightis lower than the document height. - Inspect whether the page exceeded the 60 MB download stop condition.
Lazy images are blank
Wait for a representative image selector, scroll through the document, or add a short delay after scrolling. A network-idle wait alone may finish before an intersection observer requests below-the-fold images.
A consent dialog or chat box covers content

Set an explicit navigation timeout, use a bounded scroll loop and log the current URL and document height. Infinite feeds, never-ending WebSocket activity and resources that never resolve make an unconditional “wait forever” strategy unreliable.
The screenshot differs between runs
Fix viewport, device scale, timezone, geolocation, color scheme and authenticated state. Disable animations, wait for a stable selector and decide whether ads or timestamps should be blocked. For hosted captures, use caching only when a stable artifact is more important than origin freshness.
