How detection dogs are helping protect one of Australia’s most imperiled lizards

Detection dogs are giving conservation scientists a low-disturbance way to search for the Victorian grassland earless dragon (Tympanocryptis pinguicolla), a critically endangered lizard rediscovered in western Victoria in 2023 after 54 years without a Victorian sighting. The dogs can identify the species’ scat in controlled tests, but field results so far are limited: more than 100 surveys in known dragon habitat produced only one detected scat. The technique is therefore a promising conservation trial, not yet a proven census method.

Why this lizard is so difficult to protect

The Victorian grassland earless dragon is about 15 centimetres long when fully grown and is currently known from one location west of Melbourne. Authorities are withholding the rediscovery site to reduce risks to the remaining population. The species is listed as critically endangered under both Australian and Victorian conservation systems.

Its biology makes ordinary monitoring difficult. Adults can move more than 110 metres in a day, yet the lizards spend crucial parts of their lives inside wolf-spider burrows. Those burrows provide shelter, breeding and overwintering sites, and protection from predators and extreme temperatures. A dragon can therefore be close to a survey team without appearing above ground.

The species faces several interacting pressures:

  • Loss and fragmentation of native grassland
  • Feral cats and foxes
  • Weeds and rabbits
  • Pesticide exposure
  • Drought and rising temperatures

Less than 1% of Australia’s native temperate grasslands remain, according to national recovery-plan material. Finding where dragons still occur, which habitat they use and how they move is essential to deciding where protection and restoration should be concentrated.

How the detection dogs search for dragons

Training on a target odour

Zoos Victoria’s Wildlife Detection Dog Squad trains dogs to recognise the odour of a target animal and to locate either a live animal or a trace such as scat. For this project, dogs named Sugar and Moss learned the scent associated with Victorian grassland earless dragons.

Reading the alert without disturbing the lizard

When a dog detects the target, it alerts by sitting and pointing its nose toward the source. The handler interprets that indication and maintains enough distance to avoid disturbing a dragon or damaging a fragile shelter site. The dogs are not expected to catch or handle the lizards; their role is to direct people to evidence that can be recorded safely.

Why scent can help where eyesight fails

A visual team must see a small, camouflaged reptile or inspect habitat closely enough to find an exposed sign. A trained dog can follow an odour plume to a hidden trace, including scat that is not visible from the surface. That creates a potential way to map distribution and habitat use while reducing the need to search every burrow directly.

What Sugar and Moss have demonstrated

The 2026 study account reports two important controlled-test results. The dogs distinguished Victorian grassland earless-dragon scat from scat produced by similar-sized reptiles, and they distinguished captive dragon scat from wild dragon scat. Those results show that the dogs can learn the species’ scent and recognise meaningful differences in samples.

  • 2.4" Color Display + User-Friendly Controls – Review footage on the spot with an intuitive menu and easy-access buttons.

Field work has been much harder. After more than 100 surveys in areas known to contain dragons, the dogs detected only one scat. Scat may be scarce, degraded by weather, hidden in vegetation or burrows, or difficult for a dog to reach. A successful scent-discrimination test does not automatically translate into a reliable population survey.

No evidence from this project establishes that the dogs have found an additional wild dragon population. The current result is a method demonstration with a very low field yield, and the work remains ongoing.

Detection dogs versus conventional visual surveys

The two approaches answer related but different questions. The comparison below describes the intended strengths and known limitations of the dog method; the project has not produced a validated head-to-head accuracy percentage.

Survey consideration Detection-dog approach Conventional visual search
Primary target Live-animal odour or traces such as scat Direct sighting of a live dragon or visible sign
Disturbance risk Handlers can stay back while the dog indicates direction People may need to approach closely to inspect habitat or burrows
Cryptic shelter sites Odour may lead to evidence that cannot be seen from the surface Hidden animals and burrow interiors can be missed
Availability of evidence Dependent on enough detectable scat or odour reaching the dog; field yield was one scat in more than 100 surveys Dependent on the animal being visible or active during the visit
Coverage Can sweep areas for scent, but practical performance at landscape scale is not yet established Coverage depends on people systematically inspecting suitable habitat
Mapping value Could add distribution and habitat-use records from otherwise hidden traces Provides direct location records when a dragon is seen

What the conservation project is intended to deliver

The work is supported through the NESP Resilient Landscapes Hub. Its stated purpose is to improve knowledge of the dragon’s distribution, habitat use and recovery priorities. The project runs from 1 July 2023 to 30 June 2027 and has $390,920 in GST-exclusive funding.

Better records could help managers identify grassland patches worth protecting, understand how dragons use burrows and surrounding habitat, and set priorities for reducing threats. The same training framework may eventually be adapted for other threatened Australian lizards and snakes, although each species would require its own validated odour samples and field testing.

The Australian Government described the potential plainly: “Using detection dogs in this way could be a game-changer in the conservation of this and other threatened Australian lizards and snakes.” That is a statement about the method’s potential, not a claim that the Victorian dragon project has already solved population monitoring.

What happens next

Expand and refine scent libraries

Researchers need enough verified samples to understand how scat odour varies between individuals, seasons, diets and captive versus wild conditions. The existing result shows the dogs can make distinctions, but not how consistently they will do so across every field situation.

Pair dog alerts with ecological records

Each alert can be combined with habitat description, burrow information, weather and subsequent confirmation. That combination is more useful for recovery planning than an isolated indication with no environmental context.

Keep expectations realistic

Until field detection rates improve and are independently validated, dogs should complement—not replace—visual searches, habitat protection and other monitoring. Their strongest immediate contribution is finding otherwise overlooked evidence while limiting close human intrusion into the dragon’s refuge.
