Data centres can affect wildlife through land clearing, habitat fragmentation, construction disturbance, artificial light, operational noise, air emissions, water demand and changes to drainage or runoff. The severity is highly site-specific: a facility on already-developed land with closed-loop cooling and carefully controlled lighting presents a different ecological risk from a large greenfield campus crossing wetlands, wildlife corridors or a water-stressed catchment.
Planning documents commonly identify these as potential pathways that must be assessed. They do not, by themselves, prove that wildlife harm occurred or establish a universal impact size for data centres. No general, measured effect estimate for the data-centre sector is currently published in official sources.

What kinds of wildlife and habitat effects are possible?
Habitat loss and fragmentation
The most direct pathway is physical development. Buildings are only part of a campus footprint; access roads, substations, power connections, drainage features, parking, security infrastructure, construction compounds and utility corridors can also require land. Clearing vegetation for these works can remove nesting, feeding or shelter areas. A road or utility corridor may divide one habitat into smaller sections, making movement and breeding more difficult even where some vegetation remains.
The Australian federal referral for the Western Downs Digital Park describes a staged campus with vegetation clearing, earthworks, road works, utilities and construction equipment. It lists habitat loss and fragmentation, along with fauna disturbance, as potential impacts for that particular proposal. Those statements describe pathways predicted in a project referral, not measured outcomes for every data centre or confirmation that the predicted effects occurred.

Construction disturbance
Earthmoving, piling, heavy vehicles, workers and night-time works can temporarily displace animals. Dust can settle on vegetation or water surfaces, while traffic can increase collision risk and restrict movement. The duration matters: a short construction phase has a different exposure pattern from a multi-stage campus built over several years. Seasonal timing also matters for nesting birds, breeding amphibians, maternity bats and other animals that use a site only at particular times.
Artificial light
Security lighting, illuminated buildings and vehicle areas can brighten habitat beyond the property boundary. Artificial light may alter nocturnal feeding, migration, predator avoidance and insect behaviour. UK planning guidance specifically asks whether lighting could affect protected sites or species, flags white or ultraviolet-rich light near sensitive wildlife and gives the example of light shining onto water where bats feed.
The relevant questions are where the light falls, when it operates, how much light is emitted and which species use the dark area. Light that remains inside a paved compound has a different risk profile from light spilling across a hedgerow, wetland or stream. Guidance recommends selecting and positioning luminaires carefully, avoiding light directed near or above the horizontal and using illumination only when needed. Dimming, motion controls or part-night operation may be appropriate where security and worker-safety requirements allow. These measures reduce risk but cannot guarantee that there will be no ecological effect.
Noise and air emissions
Construction machinery and traffic can create temporary noise. During operation, cooling equipment, fans and backup generators may be continuing sources that require assessment. Noise can mask animal calls, disrupt resting or roosting and cause avoidance, but no current official source establishes a data-centre-specific wildlife dose-response relationship or a typical ecological noise level.

Air quality may be relevant where diesel or other backup generators are installed, particularly if testing is frequent or generators operate during grid interruptions. Scotland’s Chief Planner identifies noise as a locational issue and notes that air quality may also need consideration where backup generation is used. The actual risk depends on equipment, operating hours, emissions controls, local topography and the species present.
Water demand, drainage and runoff
Cooling systems can connect a data centre’s operation to local water resources. Water demand must be considered against the source’s sustainable yield, competing users, drought conditions and the ecological needs of rivers, wetlands and groundwater-dependent habitats. Scotland’s Chief Planner states that closed-loop cooling systems can significantly reduce cooling-water requirements where they are used, but not every facility uses that design. The 2026 USGS synthesis on colocating data centres and energy infrastructure likewise identifies water resources as a key siting consideration.
Water use alone does not demonstrate ecological damage. A facility supplied by a robust system in a water-abundant catchment may have a different effect from one drawing during low flows in a stressed basin. A proper assessment should show the source, seasonal demand, treatment, discharge, contingency arrangements and the effect of peak operation rather than relying on an annual average alone.

Construction can affect downstream habitat even when the building footprint is small. The Western Downs referral identifies stormwater, erosion, sedimentation, changed drainage, waste and accidental spills as potential pathways. Exposed soil can carry sediment into streams or wetlands; altered drainage can dry one area while concentrating flows in another; and a spill can introduce toxic substances. Controls therefore need to cover both normal rainfall and intense-storm events, with inspection and maintenance after construction begins.

Why the same type of facility can have very different effects
“Data centre” describes a function, not one standard ecological footprint. A compact building on previously industrial land may retain surrounding habitat, while a large, staged campus may require extensive clearing and new transmission or road infrastructure. Important variables include:
- Baseline sensitivity: protected areas, threatened species, wetlands, waterways, mature woodland and seasonal wildlife use.
- Landscape connectivity: whether the site lies in a movement corridor or between otherwise separated habitat patches.
- Infrastructure beyond the fence: substations, substations’ access roads, transmission lines, pipelines, wells and discharge routes can extend the disturbance area.
- Cooling and water source: air-cooled, hybrid or closed-loop systems have different water requirements; source reliability and low-flow conditions determine ecological pressure.
- Construction schedule: work hours, night operations, traffic volume, clearing season and the number of development stages.
- Lighting and noise design: fixture spectrum, shielding, controls, equipment placement and generator testing schedules.
- Drainage and pollution controls: erosion protection, sediment basins, spill response, wastewater handling, weed hygiene and restoration commitments.
These variables explain why a prediction in one environmental assessment cannot be generalized to all facilities.
How to evaluate a proposed data centre’s wildlife risk
For a named project, read the ecological baseline and impact assessment rather than relying on the facility’s floor area or advertised power capacity. A practical review follows this sequence:

- Check the baseline: identify protected sites, threatened species, habitat types, waterways, wetlands and seasonal surveys. Look for survey dates, methods and gaps, not just a species list.
- Measure clearing and connectivity: record the area of vegetation removal, the habitat types affected and whether roads or utilities divide a corridor. Examine temporary as well as permanent disturbance.
- Trace water through the system: identify the source, treatment, cooling technology, peak and seasonal demand, wastewater destination and drought contingencies. Compare withdrawals with environmental-flow requirements and other users.
- Review construction impacts: check proposed hours, piling, traffic routes, dust controls, noise limits, clearing windows and measures for nesting, roosting or breeding animals.
- Review operational impacts: examine fan and generator noise, generator testing, emissions, lighting levels and spill or hazardous-material controls.
- Follow stormwater pathways: determine where runoff goes during ordinary and extreme rainfall, how sediment is contained and how changed drainage could affect downstream habitat.
- Check enforceability and monitoring: distinguish a design promise from a permit condition. Look for restoration targets, monitoring frequency, responsible parties, public reporting and corrective action if impacts exceed predictions.
Mitigation that can reduce impacts
Avoidance through siting
The strongest measure is avoiding sensitive habitat before design is fixed. Reusing previously disturbed or industrial land can reduce new clearing, but the assessment still needs to examine waterways, remnant vegetation and species using the site. Locating buildings and roads to preserve continuous habitat is generally more protective than clearing first and compensating later.

Lighting controls
Use the minimum light needed for safety and security. Shield fixtures, aim them downward, keep beams away from water and habitat edges, select spectra less disruptive to local species where appropriate, and use timers, dimming or part-night operation. Controls should be verified after installation because a technically compliant fixture can still spill light if mounted or aimed poorly.
Noise, dust and traffic management
Schedule the loudest construction activities outside sensitive breeding or roosting periods where surveys identify them. Maintain equipment, enforce speed limits, cover or dampen dusty loads and route heavy vehicles away from key habitat where feasible. For operations, place cooling equipment and generators to limit exposure at habitat boundaries and document generator testing hours.
Water-efficient design
Compare cooling options using a site water balance, not a generic industry average. Closed-loop systems can significantly reduce cooling-water requirements where suitable. Reuse captured water when regulations and water quality permit, and plan for drought so ecological flows are not treated as an emergency reserve.

Questions to ask when comparing two proposals
| Comparison area | Evidence to request | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Ecological sensitivity | Protected sites, threatened species, habitat maps and seasonal survey results | Identifies species and habitats that may be especially vulnerable |
| Footprint and connectivity | Permanent and temporary clearing, roads, power corridors and staging plans | Shows direct loss and whether movement routes are divided |
| Water | Cooling design, source, peak demand, wastewater and drought plan | Connects operation to local water availability and aquatic ecosystems |
| Construction and operation | Work hours, traffic, dust, noise, lighting and generator schedules | Defines duration, timing and disturbance exposure |
| Drainage and pollution | Stormwater design, sediment controls, spill response and waste handling | Addresses downstream erosion, sediment and contamination pathways |
| Mitigation and monitoring | Permit conditions, restoration commitments, monitoring reports and corrective actions | Tests whether protections are enforceable and effective |
This is a comparison framework drawn from planning and project materials, not a universal scoring system. A proposal with a larger building could present lower ecological risk than a smaller one if it avoids sensitive habitat, uses less water and has enforceable controls.

| England | Defra’s biodiversity gain statement explains how data-centre nationally significant infrastructure projects must calculate, deliver and report biodiversity net gain. | Biodiversity net gain becomes mandatory for these NSIPs on 2 November 2026; the official page was published 2 June 2026 and updated 16 June 2026. |
| Scotland | A Chief Planner direction requires environmental impact assessment for new data-centre applications above a specified power capacity. | The threshold is more than 50 MW; the direction described in the 16 September 2026 letter is in force from 17 September 2026. Smaller proposals remain subject to case-by-case EIA consideration. |
| Australia | The Western Downs Digital Park federal referral illustrates how a large proposal can describe clearing, earthworks, roads, utilities, construction equipment and potential ecological pathways. | It is project-specific referral material and does not establish that predicted impacts occurred or apply to other facilities. |
| United States | A 2026 USGS synthesis examines colocating AI data centres with energy infrastructure on federal public lands. | It identifies energy access, water resources and permitting as planning factors intended to help minimize conflicts between wildlife conservation and energy operations. |
Scotland’s Chief Planner, Dr Fiona Simpson, FRTPI, summarized the siting issue on 16 September 2026: “Depending on locational sensitivity, large-scale data centres have the potential to introduce a significant industrial presence into the landscape, requiring appropriate mitigation including through siting and design.”
What is known—and what is not
Official planning guidance and project referrals provide a clear list of mechanisms that should be assessed: clearing, fragmentation, disturbance, light, noise, air emissions, water demand, drainage, sediment and spills. They do not provide a single wildlife-population statistic, habitat-loss total or typical noise, lighting or cooling-water effect that applies to data centres as a class.
