How Data-Centre Power Chips Differ from General-Purpose Processors

How is a power chip different from a CPU or GPU? A CPU or GPU executes instructions and transforms data; a power semiconductor switches, converts, protects or regulates electricity. A server needs both: the processor performs the workload, while the power system delivers the right voltage, current and timing to keep it operating.

Power components are not one interchangeable chip category. A silicon, silicon-carbide (SiC) or gallium-nitride (GaN) transistor may switch energy, a regulator IC may hold a board rail at a precise voltage, and a digital controller may coordinate a conversion stage. Together they form the electrical path from facility power to processor and memory rails.

What each type of chip actually does

CPUs and GPUs process information

A general-purpose CPU fetches and executes program instructions. It performs integer and floating-point operations, manages operating-system tasks, handles branching and memory access, and coordinates software running on the server. A GPU contains many parallel arithmetic units optimized for workloads such as matrix operations, graphics, simulation and machine-learning training. Both are data-processing devices: their useful output is computed information.

Processors consume electrical power, but they do not normally convert incoming rack power directly. Their cores and memory interfaces require tightly controlled low-voltage rails whose current can change rapidly as workloads start, stop or shift between execution units.

Power semiconductors shape electrical energy

Power semiconductors sit in conversion and protection stages. A transistor such as a MOSFET or a wide-bandgap switch turns current on and off; inductors, capacitors and transformers smooth or transfer that energy; a regulator IC senses a rail and adjusts switching to hold its target voltage. Protection devices can limit surges, isolate faults or manage inrush current. A power-management controller may run feedback algorithms and communicate status digitally, but its controlled function is the power stage rather than the server application.

onsemi describes these components across “power generation and distribution systems, data center power supplies, battery backup systems, cooling equipment, server power units, networking equipment, and voltage regulation modules that deliver power directly to GPU/CPUs and AI accelerators.” Its data-centre explainer presents the distinction in plain language without treating the devices as substitutes.

How electricity gets from a facility to a processor

The exact topology differs by rack, region and generation of equipment, but a server power path normally contains several conversion stages. A simplified sequence is:

  1. Facility and rack input: Incoming alternating current from the electrical distribution system enters a power-supply unit (PSU). The PSU rectifies and regulates AC into a DC output suitable for rack distribution. Microchip’s data-centre power-distribution overview describes a path extending from the medium-voltage grid through rack distribution.
  2. Intermediate conversion and protection: An intermediate-bus converter, isolation stage, switches, fuses and monitoring circuits move energy through the rack and compute tray. Bus voltage and the location of isolation vary by architecture; no single rack diagram is universal. Infineon outlines these stages in its server-rack power-management material.
  3. Board and point-of-load regulation: Voltage-regulation modules, multiphase power stages and point-of-load converters create the low-voltage rails used by CPUs, GPUs, memory and other logic. onsemi defines point-of-load conversion as the final conversion stage that delivers the precise voltage a device requires.
  4. Workload operation: Once the rails meet their voltage, current and transient-response requirements, the CPU, GPU or accelerator executes code and processes data. Its changing workload appears to the power system as changing electrical demand.

Each stage trades voltage, current, switching frequency, efficiency, heat and physical size. Moving power at a higher voltage can reduce current for a given wattage and therefore reduce distribution losses, while the final processor rail must be very low voltage and capable of supplying large, fast-changing current.

Why one server needs both kinds of silicon

Removing the processor leaves no device to run applications, virtual machines or AI models. Removing the power chain leaves the processor without a usable supply. The two subsystems are complementary: compute silicon determines what calculations can be performed, while power silicon determines whether those calculations receive stable energy within safe electrical and thermal limits.

A power controller can contain digital logic, telemetry and firmware. That does not make it the CPU running the server’s workload. Its logic closes a feedback loop, sequences rails, responds to faults or reports voltage and temperature to a management system.

Comparison: processor versus power semiconductor

Characteristic CPU or GPU Power semiconductor or power-management IC
Primary job Execute instructions and arithmetic on data Switch, convert, regulate, sense or protect electrical energy
Typical location Compute socket, accelerator module or system board PSU, rack converter, voltage-regulation module or point-of-load stage
Inputs and outputs Data, instructions and memory transactions; produces computed results Electrical input rail; produces a controlled electrical output rail or protection response
Key operating concerns Instruction throughput, latency, cache and memory bandwidth Voltage and current range, switching and conduction losses, transient response, heat and protection
Normal failure effect Incorrect computation, crash or loss of a compute device Out-of-tolerance rail, shutdown, overheating or damage to downstream hardware
How it is compared Architecture, cores, frequency, throughput and workload efficiency Efficiency, switching frequency, voltage rating, current capability, power density, reliability and system cost

Comparing a GPU’s compute throughput with a MOSFET’s switching efficiency would mix two different jobs. Engineers first identify where each device sits in the power path and then compare it against alternatives designed for that same electrical position.

The voltage transformation inside an AI-oriented rack

Infineon presents one current architecture with a 50 V rack bus followed by downstream stages that generate less than 1 V for GPU core power on its data-centre power-solutions page. The values illustrate the scale change inside a single system, not a specification for every server. The rack can distribute energy at tens of volts, while a processor core needs a sub-volt rail with extremely fast control of current transients.

The final regulator is placed close to the load because board traces and connectors have resistance and inductance. At the same power, raising voltage lowers current; at the processor, however, the required voltage is set by transistor operating limits. The local converter therefore handles high current, rapid load steps and tight voltage tolerance even though its output voltage is small.

As accelerators become denser, the rack-level supply, bus converters, board regulators, cooling hardware and facility distribution must be designed as one chain. A more powerful GPU does not simply require a larger “CPU-style” chip; it requires coordinated changes in every power stage that feeds it.

Silicon, SiC and GaN: why material choice changes by stage

Conventional silicon remains widely used in data-centre power designs. Silicon carbide and gallium nitride are wide-bandgap materials that manufacturers target for stages where switching loss, frequency, thermal behavior or power density are important. Infineon says its relevant server-PSU designs use SiC and GaN to support faster switching, lower switching losses and improved thermal performance compared with conventional silicon devices. That is a manufacturer characterization for applicable designs, not proof that every SiC or GaN part wins on every metric.

Material or option Potential reason to use it What still has to be checked
Silicon Mature processes, broad voltage and current choices, established control and manufacturing ecosystems Conduction and switching losses, heat removal and achievable switching frequency in the selected topology
Silicon carbide (SiC) Useful in higher-voltage or high-power switching stages where lower switching loss and thermal capability can improve the design Gate-drive behavior, packaging, electromagnetic interference, cost and compatibility with the converter
Gallium nitride (GaN) Fast switching can enable higher frequency, smaller magnetics and higher power density in suitable stages Voltage and current range, layout, control-loop behavior, thermal path, protection and system-level cost

The right comparison is not “which material is best?” Engineers evaluate voltage and current ratings, switching and conduction losses, frequency, thermal management, reliability, control and protection requirements, footprint, serviceability and total system complexity. A material that is advantageous in a PSU may not be the best choice for a processor-side regulator.

The engineering metrics that matter

Electrical position and demands

A grid-facing converter handles higher voltage and isolation requirements than a board-level regulator. A processor rail may operate below 1 V while delivering very high current and responding to abrupt load changes. Voltage rating, current rating, safe operating area and transient response must match the stage rather than the marketing name of the chip.

Losses and efficiency

Switching losses rise with switching frequency, voltage and current, while conduction losses depend on the device’s resistance and current. Higher frequency can shrink inductors and transformers but increases switching and electromagnetic-interference challenges. Engineers therefore optimize the complete converter, not one transistor in isolation.

Thermal management and density

Every watt lost as heat must be conducted away through packages, heat sinks, airflow or liquid cooling. Higher power density saves rack space but concentrates heat and can make service more difficult. The mechanical design, cooling loop and electrical layout are part of the semiconductor decision.

Control, sensing and protection

Regulators need feedback sensing, gate drivers, current limits, soft-start sequencing, over-voltage and over-temperature protection, and communication with system management. A device with excellent raw switching characteristics can still be unsuitable if the control scheme, fault response or isolation requirements do not fit the rack.

Cost, reliability and serviceability

Component price is only one part of cost. Magnetics, capacitors, controllers, cooling, validation, firmware and replacement procedures affect the system total. Reliability must be assessed for the complete operating temperature, load profile and maintenance plan, not inferred from semiconductor material alone.

What published power figures do—and do not—tell you

Infineon’s 2025 white paper on scaling AI data-centre delivery describes PSU reference-design generations in a range of 3 to 12 kW. That range applies to the designs discussed in the paper, not to every server PSU or rack.

STMicroelectronics’ 2026 AI server power guide reports power density above 1.1 kW/in³ for the solution it describes. This is a reported characteristic of that solution, not an industry-wide benchmark.

Infineon says modern AI racks are above 100 kW today and could move toward 600 kW to 1.x MW. That is a vendor estimate and projection; the cited material does not establish universal deployment, a common date or a particular facility’s operating value. Treat 400 V and 800 V rack concepts, and megawatt-scale arrangements, as architecture directions until a specific deployment, geography and commissioning date are documented. Infineon’s server-PSU information and white paper provide design context but are not independent market statistics.

How to identify the power chips in a server diagram

  1. Find the AC input and PSU. Devices near rectifiers, power-factor-correction inductors and isolation transformers are handling facility-to-DC conversion.
  2. Trace the rack bus to intermediate converters. Look for switches, protection components and bus capacitors between the PSU and compute tray.
  3. Locate the voltage-regulation modules beside the CPU or GPU socket. Their inductors, controller ICs and power stages feed the processor and memory rails.
  4. Read the rail labels and measurements. A 12 V or 50 V bus is not the same as a sub-1 V core rail; each has different current, transient and cooling requirements.
  5. Check the control and telemetry path. Digital communication, sequencing and fault reporting identify management functions, not workload execution.

This method prevents a common mistake: calling every chip on a server board a “processor.” A small controller beside a GPU may be essential to its operation while never executing the application code that the GPU runs.

Common misunderstandings and practical failure symptoms

“A power chip is a slower CPU.”

No. Its control logic may calculate duty cycles or respond to sensor readings, but it is optimized to regulate an electrical rail. It cannot replace the CPU or GPU that runs an operating system or model.

“Higher rack voltage means the GPU runs at higher voltage.”

No. Rack voltage and processor-core voltage are separated by conversion stages. The 50 V-to-less-than-1 V example demonstrates why a high-voltage distribution bus can coexist with a low-voltage core supply.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“GaN or SiC automatically saves energy.”

Material choice helps only when the topology, switching frequency, gate drive, magnetics, layout, cooling and control are designed to exploit it. A poorly matched wide-bandgap device can add cost or complexity without improving the complete system.

“A compute failure always means the CPU or GPU is defective.”

An out-of-tolerance regulator, failed protection device, overheating PSU or unstable transient response can shut down a healthy processor. Diagnostic work should measure rails, fault logs, temperatures and sequencing before replacing compute silicon.

Where rack power architectures are heading

AI accelerators are increasing power per tray and per rack, so designers are revisiting bus voltage, conversion location, cooling and service procedures together. Higher-voltage distribution can reduce current in long rack paths; additional isolation and protection are then required. Intermediate buses can move conversion closer to the load, while point-of-load stages continue to provide the tight voltage control that processor cores need.

These directions are not a single universal standard. A facility’s utility connection, rack design, accelerator mix, redundancy target and deployment date determine whether a 400 V, 800 V or megawatt-scale arrangement is practical. Manufacturer road maps are useful for understanding possible architectures, but a particular installation needs its own electrical and thermal specifications.

The practical takeaway

General-purpose processors answer the question “What computation should the server perform?” Power semiconductors answer “How can the electrical system safely deliver the energy that computation requires?” The PSU, bus converters, protection devices, voltage-regulation modules and point-of-load stages form a coordinated chain. CPUs, GPUs and accelerators sit at the end of that chain and turn the delivered energy into useful computation. Understanding their different jobs makes server specifications, rack-power diagrams and failure reports much easier to interpret.
