Data brokers build profiles from public records, online activity, purchases, subscriptions, and information supplied by other brokers. You can ask people-search sites to remove or suppress listings one by one; California residents can also submit a free request through the state’s DROP platform. Neither route guarantees that every copy disappears or stays gone.
What data brokers collect and how they get it
“Data broker” describes more than one kind of business. People-search sites are the consumer-facing variety: they compile profiles and reports that may be sold to people looking up someone. Other brokers provide data for marketing, analytics, or risk-related services. A request to one people-search site does not automatically control other brokers or every downstream use.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) says people-search sites may buy information from other brokers, collect material from public social profiles, and compile public records. Examples include property and driving records, voter registration, criminal records, civil actions, and judgments. The FTC’s 2014 study of nine brokers also described online and offline sources such as purchases, warranty registrations, magazine subscriptions, and social-media activity. Brokers in that study combined data and derived categories or inferences for clients; those findings describe the businesses examined then, not every broker’s current practices.

How to opt out of people-search listings
- Search for your listing. Look up your name and, if needed, identifiers such as a phone number or address on people-search sites.
- Use each site’s own removal process. Follow its opt-out instructions. If you cannot find them, search the site’s name together with “opt out” or “remove my information.” A site may ask for details to confirm your identity.
- Review what you submit. Provide identifying details only through the site’s stated request process, and check what information it asks for before sending it.
- Repeat across sites. Each site has its own process; removing a profile from one does not remove it from another.
- Recheck periodically. New information or updated source records can lead to a listing returning.
These steps follow the FTC’s consumer guidance on people-search sites. Manual requests do not usually cost anything, but finding listings and repeating requests takes time.
What an opt-out does—and what it cannot do
An opt-out can suppress or remove information covered by that site’s process. It does not necessarily delete the source record, control another broker’s copy, or block every use of information about you. Public records may remain on government websites, and information may still appear in reports about relatives, neighbors, or associates. A changed source record can also cause a broker listing to reappear.

Requests may take time, fail to match a record when your identifying details differ, or cover only certain data or uses. Removing a people-search profile is not the same as deleting information held by a business you dealt with directly. Credit-report information and direct first-party data can have different rules and request channels.

Choosing between manual requests, a service, and California DROP

The FTC recommends checking a paid service’s site coverage, whether it reports which removals it pursued, and how often it scans for new or reappearing information. Coverage and performance vary by provider; a service is a convenience, not a guarantee of complete or permanent removal.

California residents: submit a request through DROP
California’s Delete Request and Opt-out Platform (DROP) is a free state option for California residents. It lets an eligible resident submit one request to more than 600 registered data brokers, asking them to delete and stop selling personal information within the law’s scope. The California Privacy Protection Agency’s DROP guidance says broker processing began August 1, 2026; brokers access the platform at least every 45 days, and status updates may take up to 90 days. A broker may report that it could not match a record exactly to the identifying information submitted.
DROP is not a universal deletion request for every company. California’s scope explainer distinguishes broker-held information collected from third parties from information a consumer provided directly to a business. For direct first-party data, use that company’s own privacy-request process. An unmatched record does not prove that no information about you exists.
