Lower crude prices can reduce the cost of some paint inputs, but a weaker rupee can make imported or foreign-currency-priced materials more expensive. The two effects can offset each other. What ultimately matters to earnings is the company’s complete raw-material basket, procurement timing, pricing decisions and other costs—not crude oil or the exchange rate in isolation.
How crude prices reach paint-company earnings
Paint makers buy a range of raw materials, including inputs whose prices are linked to crude oil or its derivatives. When crude prices fall, those crude-linked materials may become cheaper and ease input costs. That is a potential cost benefit, not a direct increase in profit: it must pass through the company’s purchases and accounts before it can affect margins.

A Motilal Oswal Financial Services research note dated 6 April 2026 describes crude-linked derivatives as a material part of paint raw-material costs. That is broker analysis about the industry, not a universal measure of each company’s cost structure. The available company disclosures do not establish a comparable crude-and-rupee earnings sensitivity percentage.

Why a weaker rupee can offset lower crude
Some materials may be imported or priced in foreign currency. If the rupee weakens, their rupee cost can rise, even if the underlying foreign-currency price is unchanged or falling. The result depends on which inputs a company buys, their prices and currencies, and when purchases are made.

Kansai Nerolac’s FY 2025–26 annual report gives a direct example: “Although average crude oil prices declined during the year, currency depreciation partially offset the impact. Consequently, overall raw material prices remained largely stable throughout the year.” This is the company’s account of its own year, not a rule that every paint maker’s costs will move in the same way.
Why the effect varies by company and over time
The whole input basket matters
Crude is not the only possible cost driver, and the balance between crude-linked, imported and other materials differs across companies. The movement in crude alone therefore cannot show whether a company’s total raw-material costs rose or fell.

Procurement affects timing and cost
Companies do not necessarily buy every material at the day’s market price. Purchase timing, supplier terms and procurement planning can shape when a price change appears in costs. Asian Paints describes an integrated raw-material procurement-planning solution intended to optimise procurement cost in its FY 2024–25 management discussion. That provides context for why market movements need not pass straight through to reported margins; it does not quantify a specific crude or currency effect.
Pricing and business mix also matter
A company’s pricing actions, sales mix and geographic exposure can influence the eventual earnings result. For scale, Asian Paints reported decorative and home décor revenue of ₹30,830.4 crore, or 86.8% of revenue, in FY 2025–26. That business mix is useful context when comparing companies, but it is not a measure of crude-price sensitivity.

What Kansai Nerolac’s FY 2025–26 results show—and do not show
Kansai Nerolac reported revenue from operations of ₹7,739.23 crore in FY 2025–26, compared with ₹7,496.71 crore in FY 2024–25. Operating profit was ₹764.86 crore, down from ₹780.45 crore, while profit before tax before exceptional items was ₹898.91 crore, compared with ₹907.42 crore. These figures show that higher revenue did not mean higher operating profit in that comparison; they do not isolate crude prices or the rupee as the cause.
To assess an earnings report, compare management’s raw-material commentary with operating profit and any separately disclosed pricing, procurement or cost changes. Revenue growth alone cannot establish whether lower input costs improved profitability.

How to read claims about crude and paint stocks
- Check whether the claim concerns crude itself or the company’s reported raw-material costs.
- Look for the company’s explanation of currency movements, procurement and pricing in the same reporting period.
- Compare operating profit as well as revenue, and distinguish operating results from profit before tax and exceptional items.
- Do not assume a common sensitivity across paint makers unless the company publishes a comparable measure.
