Cross margin shares eligible collateral across positions; isolated margin assigns collateral to one position or trading-pair account. Cross can keep a trade alive with equity elsewhere in the shared account, but a loss can consume funds supporting other positions. Isolated normally confines a position’s loss to its allocated margin, although wallet-wide liquidation rules, funding debits and other venue-specific exceptions can still affect additional balances. Liquidation is not governed by one universal formula: each exchange defines its trigger, collateral valuation, maintenance requirements and risk tiers.
What the two margin modes actually control
Margin mode answers one practical question: which funds may be used to keep a leveraged position above its maintenance requirement? The answer determines both the position’s chance of surviving an adverse move and the amount of your account that can be drawn into the loss.

Cross margin: one collateral pool
In cross mode, eligible funds in the relevant exchange account or wallet are pooled. Bybit’s Unified Trading Account rules say the entire available account balance is used to maintain open positions. Binance’s cross-margin guide similarly states that assets in the cross-margin account are shared as collateral, so a loss on one position can change the account’s overall risk ratio. Kraken’s multi-collateral derivatives wallet uses funds available in the margin wallet for cross positions, while excluding initial margin reserved for isolated positions (Kraken’s margin and liquidation documentation).

Isolated margin: a position-level allocation
Isolated mode reserves a specified amount for a particular position or trading-pair account. Binance says funds in an isolated account can collateralize only that account; assets in other cross or isolated accounts cannot be used as its collateral (Binance’s isolated-margin guide). Bybit describes the maximum position loss in isolated mode as the initial margin plus any extra margin added to that position (Bybit’s liquidation rules). Kraken likewise describes isolated initial margin as the funds allocated to that position.
That is an ordinary position-level boundary, not an absolute promise that no other balance can ever be touched. Kraken warns that an account-wide liquidation can liquidate isolated positions too, and that funding payments for isolated positions are deducted from the general wallet balance. Those debits can leave an isolated position without enough support and cause liquidation (Kraken Support).
How cross and isolated change your liquidation exposure
| Question | Cross margin | Isolated margin |
|---|---|---|
| Collateral scope | Eligible collateral is shared within the defined account or wallet, subject to exchange rules. | Collateral is assigned to one position or trading-pair account; other accounts normally cannot contribute. |
| What can support a losing trade? | Available equity elsewhere in the shared pool may satisfy maintenance requirements. | Only the allocated margin and any explicitly added margin normally support the position. |
| Ordinary loss boundary | A losing position can reduce equity available to every cross position in that pool. | The position’s allocated margin is ordinarily the amount at risk, but wallet-wide rules and debits can create exceptions. |
| Liquidation reference | Often an account-level metric such as maintenance-margin ratio or margin level; any displayed price may move as account conditions change. | Often a position liquidation price based on the allocated margin, but the exact trigger is venue-specific. |
| Best understood as | Shared support and shared account exposure. | Position-level containment with less ability to borrow strength from other balances. |
The choice is therefore not “safe versus unsafe.” Cross trades a wider loss boundary for a larger collateral buffer. Isolated narrows the ordinary loss boundary but can liquidate sooner because no other eligible equity is available.

What actually triggers liquidation
Liquidation begins when the exchange’s maintenance requirement is no longer met. The trigger and calculation differ by venue, product, account type, leverage and risk tier.

Bybit Unified Trading Account
Bybit states that isolated liquidation is triggered when the mark price reaches the position’s liquidation price. In cross mode, liquidation occurs when the account maintenance-margin ratio (MMR) reaches 100%. The cross-mode liquidation price shown in the interface is a dynamic reference, calculated from current balances and market conditions rather than a fixed threshold (Bybit Trading Rules: Liquidation Process).
Because equity, unrealized profit and loss, margin use and other positions change continuously, a cross reference price can move without the traded instrument moving to that level. Treat it as an estimate of current account conditions, not as a guaranteed “line in the sand.”
Binance margin-level calculations
Binance uses margin-level and risk-control calculations. The applicable threshold varies with leverage, account type, maintenance requirements, liabilities and collateral valuation (Binance Margin Level and Risk Control). Binance also says its relevant calculations include collateral haircuts effective 15 June 2026 at 08:00 UTC. A haircut means the exchange credits less than an asset’s unadjusted market value for margin purposes, so a price chart alone cannot tell you how much support remains.
Kraken multi-collateral derivatives
Kraken’s documentation describes cross and isolated positions inside a multi-collateral wallet and an account-wide liquidation scenario that can affect isolated positions (Kraken Support). The wallet boundary, funding debits and the exchange’s own maintenance calculations matter as much as the label displayed beside the position.

Mark price, last price and why a stop can arrive too late
Liquidation and stop orders may use different price references. Bybit says liquidation uses mark price rather than last traded price. Its FAQ explains that a stop loss triggered by last traded price may execute too late if the mark price reaches liquidation first: the chart’s last-traded line might never appear to touch the liquidation level even though the mark-price trigger did (Bybit FAQ — Order Execution and Liquidation).
This does not make stop losses pointless. It means you must verify the trigger setting for the stop order, understand which price the liquidation engine watches, and leave enough distance for order execution and market conditions. A stop order is an instruction to attempt an exit; it does not override the exchange’s liquidation engine.
Why cross margin can help—and spread damage
The buffer benefit
Suppose one cross position is losing while another balance in the same eligible pool remains uncommitted. That equity can increase the account’s capacity to meet maintenance requirements, potentially delaying liquidation compared with an isolated position funded with the same initial amount. The support is account-level: it is not a free loan and it disappears as the losing position reduces total equity.
The contagion risk
The same pooling creates a larger loss boundary. A losing position lowers shared equity and can reduce the risk capacity of other cross positions. An account-level threshold can therefore force reductions or liquidations even when another individual position’s displayed price looks acceptable. Withdrawals, new orders, funding, interest, unrealized losses and collateral haircuts can all change the remaining buffer.

Why isolated margin can contain damage—and liquidate earlier
The containment benefit
With isolated margin, a position normally cannot draw collateral from other cross or isolated accounts. If the position is liquidated, the ordinary exposure is the initial allocation plus any extra margin explicitly added, rather than the entire shared wallet. This makes the maximum planned loss easier to ring-fence and prevents one speculative trade from automatically consuming collateral reserved for unrelated positions.
The smaller buffer
Isolation also removes the ability to use spare equity elsewhere. A relatively small adverse move can exhaust the position’s allocation even while the wider account has substantial funds. Adding margin can move the liquidation threshold, but it also increases the amount committed to that position; it does not remove market, execution or platform risk.
Exceptions to the simple “only this margin is at risk” rule
- An exchange can apply an account-wide liquidation process that includes isolated positions.
- Funding payments, interest or other debits may be taken from a general wallet and leave less support available.
- Collateral eligibility, conversion rates and haircuts can reduce the value credited to the position.
- Risk-limit tiers can change maintenance requirements or the order in which exposure is reduced.
Liquidation may be staged rather than instantaneous
Liquidation handling is venue-specific. Bybit describes a process that can cancel orders which would increase exposure and, depending on the position’s risk-limit tier, partially reduce position size before full liquidation (Bybit liquidation process; Bybit Contract Rules). This is not a promise that every exchange offers a rescue stage or that a position will be saved. Read the applicable contract and risk-limit rules before relying on partial reductions.

- Define the collateral boundary. In the order ticket and account documentation, identify the exact wallet, account and assets eligible to support the position. Confirm whether balances are shared across symbols, contracts or products.
- Write down the loss boundary. For isolated mode, record the initial margin and any extra margin you may add. For cross mode, assume the whole eligible pool can be exposed to an account-level liquidation event.
- Find the real trigger metric. Look for “mark price,” “maintenance-margin ratio,” “margin level” or another named metric in the venue’s current rules. Do not infer the trigger from a chart’s last-traded price.
- Check collateral valuation. Record supported collateral currencies, conversion prices, ratios and haircuts. Binance’s stated haircut change on 15 June 2026 illustrates why an asset’s market value and its margin value may differ.
- Check leverage and risk tiers. Position size, leverage and maintenance requirements can move the threshold and may alter liquidation handling. A displayed liquidation price without its tier and account assumptions is incomplete information.
- Match the stop trigger to the liquidation trigger. Verify whether the stop uses mark, index or last price, and keep adequate distance for execution. Never assume a stop prevents liquidation.
- Stress-test account events. Consider a simultaneous loss on another cross position, a funding debit, a collateral haircut, a withdrawal or a new order that increases margin use. If that scenario would threaten money reserved for essentials, reduce leverage or use a smaller isolated allocation.
- Monitor the account metric, not just one price. Cross users should watch account MMR or margin level and total equity. Isolated users should watch the position’s margin, funding and any exchange notices about wallet-wide liquidation.
Comparison checklist before opening a leveraged trade
- Which exact balances are eligible collateral?
- Are assets shared by all positions, only by one product, or only inside one wallet?
- What amount is ordinarily lost if the position is liquidated?
- Can funding, interest or fees be debited from another balance?
- Is liquidation based on a position liquidation price or an account-level ratio?
- Which price—mark, index or last—triggers liquidation?
- Which price triggers your stop order?
- Are displayed liquidation prices fixed, estimated or reference-only?
- How do leverage, position size and risk-limit tiers alter maintenance requirements?
- Does the exchange describe partial liquidation, order cancellation or another staged process?
Common mistakes and how to correct them
“Cross is always safer because it has more collateral”
More collateral can delay liquidation, but it also makes more of the account available to a losing trade. Correct the comparison by asking whether the priority is survival of one position or protection of unrelated funds.
Best Value
“Isolated means the rest of my account can never be touched”
That conclusion ignores account-wide liquidation rules and wallet debits. Read the venue’s exception language and confirm where funding and interest are charged.
“The liquidation price on screen is exact”
In Bybit cross mode it is explicitly a changing reference. On any venue, collateral values, other positions, leverage tiers and liabilities can change the calculation. Treat the number as conditional on the displayed assumptions.
“My stop loss guarantees an exit first”
A last-price stop can lag a mark-price liquidation trigger, and fast markets can produce slippage or insufficient execution. Check both trigger references and leave a risk buffer.

What to verify when exchange rules change
Margin rules are operational settings, not permanent specifications. Re-check the exchange’s current help pages before changing leverage or margin mode, especially after a product migration, wallet redesign or risk-parameter announcement. The source material reviewed here was current to 13 October 2026; Bybit’s liquidation-process page was updated 7 August 2026, and Binance identifies collateral haircuts effective 15 June 2026 at 08:00 UTC. Thresholds, eligible assets, haircuts, risk tiers and account features can change after those dates.
Use the venue’s own documentation for the final decision: Bybit’s UTA liquidation process, Bybit’s liquidation FAQ, Binance’s margin-level rules, Binance’s cross-margin guide, Binance’s isolated-margin guide and Kraken’s multi-collateral margin documentation.
