How Cricut Print Then Cut Works: Printing, Registration Marks, and Cutting Explained

Cricut Print Then Cut is a two-device workflow: Design Space sends your artwork to a home printer with black cut-sensor markings, then a compatible Cricut machine scans those markings and cuts the printed shapes. The marks—often called registration marks—give the machine a visual reference for the sheet’s position, scale, and rotation so it can follow the contours you designed.

The result is useful for stickers, labels, toppers, printed photos, and other full-color projects that a blade cannot create from plain cut lines alone. Accurate results depend on four things working together: a Print Then Cut-compatible machine, a suitable printer and material, the page size selected in Design Space, and a readable contrast between the sensor marks and the sheet.

What happens during Print Then Cut

Design Space treats Print Then Cut as one coordinated job rather than two unrelated files. You create or import the artwork, tell Design Space which layers should print, and set the project to Print Then Cut. The software adds the cut-sensor markings around the printable area and sends the composed page to your printer. You then place that physical print on a machine mat and load it into the Cricut. The machine first scans the markings, establishes the sheet’s location, and then moves the blade around the cut paths.

The printed marks are not decorative borders and they are not part of the finished sticker or topper. They are optical reference points. If they are missing, resized, distorted, too faint, or difficult for the sensor to distinguish from the material, the machine may refuse to start or may cut in the wrong place.

Why printing outside Design Space causes problems

Cricut warns against exporting the project as a PDF and printing it separately as a workaround. The exported page can be resized by the PDF viewer, printer driver, or operating system, which changes the relationship between the artwork and the marks. Even a small scale change can make the machine’s scan position disagree with the printed design. Print from the Design Space flow on the same device whenever possible, and leave the marks intact.

Which Cricut machines support it?

According to Cricut’s current workflow guidance, Print Then Cut is available on the Joy Xtra, Explore, Maker, and Venture families. The original Cricut Joy is explicitly not capable of Print Then Cut. The family name alone is not enough to establish compatibility: products can differ by generation, and software support can change as new machines are released. Check the exact model shown in your Design Space account and the current Cricut compatibility list before buying printable supplies.

Machine family Print Then Cut status in Cricut’s listed guidance Important qualification
Cricut Joy Xtra Supported Use the page sizes and materials that Design Space offers for the specific machine.
Cricut Explore Supported Older models have more restrictive material-contrast guidance than newer listed machines.
Cricut Maker Supported Confirm the exact model and current software prompts.
Cricut Venture Supported Follow the machine-specific loading and size instructions in Design Space.
Cricut Joy Not supported It cannot scan Print Then Cut sensor markings.

What the registration, or cut-sensor, marks do

Readers commonly call these printed borders “registration marks.” Cricut’s own terminology is cut sensor markings or cut sensor marks. They allow the machine’s optical system to identify the printable sheet and align the digital cut paths with the physical ink on that sheet.

During loading, the machine looks for the expected dark marks. Once it recognizes them, it can account for where the page sits on the mat rather than assuming that the page was placed with mathematical perfection. It then cuts the outlines that Design Space calculated from your artwork. The marks therefore solve a registration problem: the printer and the cutting machine do not share a mechanical coordinate system, so the scanner creates the missing reference.

Cricut Waterproof Sticker Paper (20 White Sheets, 8.5x11)
  • 20 sheets Printable Vinyl 8.5 in x 11 in (21.6 cm x 27.9 cm) in White; 20 sheets Vinyl Laminate 8.5 in x 11 in (21.6 cm x 27.9 cm)
  • Waterproof and UV resistant up to 2 years
  • Requires inkjet printer
  • Compatible with Cricut Maker 3/4, Explore 3/4, and Joy Xtra machines

Do not crop, cover, redraw, or manually reposition the marks. They are generated for that particular page layout. If a printer driver adds “fit to page,” border expansion, or another scaling adjustment, the marks and artwork can both change size and no longer match the expected geometry.

Printer choice: inkjet versus laser

An inkjet printer is the broadly recommended choice for Cricut printable media. It can print on printable vinyl, printable iron-on, and sticker paper designed for inkjet use. Cricut’s Printable Sticker Paper instructions specify inkjet printers only.

Laser printers fuse toner with heat. That heat can damage or deform heat-sensitive printable vinyl and printable iron-on, and it can create problems for material that was not manufactured for laser printing. A laser printer can be appropriate for ordinary paper, some cardstock, and specialty stock explicitly labeled for laser use, but the printer type must match the selected material.

Printer and stock combination Use guidance Reason
Inkjet + Cricut Printable Sticker Paper Supported; Cricut specifies inkjet only. The sheet is designed for inkjet ink and may be damaged by laser heat.
Inkjet + printable vinyl or printable iron-on Generally the recommended setup. These materials are commonly heat-sensitive.
Laser + ordinary paper or suitable cardstock Often workable when the stock is rated for laser printers. There is no heat-sensitive coating to damage, but the cutting material still needs to scan correctly.
Laser + inkjet-only sticker paper, vinyl, or iron-on Do not use. Heat can damage the material or the printer; Cricut specifically warns against laser use for its inkjet-only sticker paper.

Cricut does not specify one preferred printer make or model. Choose based on the paper or vinyl you intend to use, the printer’s supported page sizes, and its ability to produce clean, dark marks without unexpected scaling.

Material and color: give the sensor enough contrast

The optical sensor needs a strong visual difference between the black marks and the surface around them. Material guidance depends on both the machine generation and the stock’s finish.

  • Explore Air 2 and older machines are guided toward non-reflective white materials.
  • Newer listed machines can work with non-reflective white, lightly colored, and simple patterned materials, within Cricut’s stated compatibility limits.
  • Reflective, metallic, glitter, glossy, embossed, very dark, or visually busy surfaces can prevent reliable scanning or make the cut shift.
  • Patterned paper is not guaranteed simply because a newer machine can accept some light patterns.

Do not turn those cautions into an absolute rule that every glossy or holographic sheet fails. Cricut’s current workflow information identifies certain Cricut-branded gold, silver, and holographic printable products as compatible with specified newer machines. That qualification applies to the named product and machine combination; it does not make every non-Cricut holographic or dark sheet safe. Test unfamiliar stock with a small project before committing a full sheet.

How to make a Print Then Cut project

  1. Open Design Space and prepare the artwork. Import your image or build the design in a new canvas. Confirm that the intended layers are set to Print Then Cut rather than separate cut-only layers.
  2. Choose the correct contour behavior. If a layered illustration should receive one cut around its outside edge, select the relevant layers and choose Flatten. Flatten turns the visible composition into one printable shape. Attach preserves relationships between layers but can cause the machine to cut around individual elements, which is usually not what you want for a single sticker outline.
  3. Check the printable page and material setting. Select a supported material size in Design Space and choose a setting appropriate to the stock. The largest sheet your printer can physically feed is not necessarily a size that the Cricut machine and Design Space support for Print Then Cut.
  4. Send the job to the printer from Design Space. Keep the sensor marks enabled. In the system print dialog, disable options such as fit to page or shrink to printable area if they would alter the document scale. Use the printer settings recommended for the stock, and allow ink to dry according to the material instructions.
  5. Place the print on the mat. Follow Design Space’s illustration for orientation and position. Smooth the sheet onto the recommended mat without covering the marks or introducing a curl that could affect scanning.
  6. Load the compatible Cricut. Insert the mat when the on-screen prompt appears. The machine will search for the marks first, then cut the design if the scan succeeds.
  7. Inspect before unloading. When the cut finishes, check one corner while the sheet is still on the mat. If the outline is consistently displaced, keep the project details and address calibration or material setup before wasting another sheet.

Page size and printer settings

Print Then Cut page limits are machine-specific. Design Space may offer fewer supported sizes than your printer can accept, so select the page size inside Design Space rather than assuming that a Letter, A4, or custom sheet will work. The available dimensions can also depend on the machine, mat, and current software version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before printing a valuable sheet, verify that the printer dialog reports the same paper size selected in Design Space. Do not center the artwork manually in another application, enlarge the page to fill the printer’s margins, or allow automatic borderless expansion. Those changes can preserve a visually similar page while changing the exact scale needed for the cut paths.

Calibration: when the marks scan but the cut is wrong

Cricut machines are pre-calibrated, but calibration can improve Print Then Cut accuracy when the blade consistently misses the printed edge. Calibration is different from a sensor-reading failure: if the machine cannot find the marks at all, start with material and print visibility; if it finds them but cuts offset, use the calibration process.

Prepare the calibration sheet

Cricut’s calibration guidance, edited September 3, 2026, calls for a portrait-oriented print in black ink on white, non-textured copy paper. Use one page per sheet. Do not scale the print, center-align it, or enable edge or borderless printing. The calibration page must remain at its original size so the machine can compare known printed lines with its blade position.

Run the guided process

  1. Open the calibration option in Design Space and select the exact machine and device combination shown by the software.
  2. Print the calibration page using the settings above.
  3. Place the page on the mat exactly as the on-screen illustration shows.
  4. Let the machine scan and cut the indicated lines.
  5. Inspect the test cuts and select the line or result requested by Design Space.
  6. Repeat only when the guided process asks for another calibration sheet, then retest the original material with a small Print Then Cut job.

Menus and prompts vary by model and interface, so use the current machine-specific instructions in Design Space rather than an older video made for a different Cricut.

Troubleshooting by symptom

The machine says it cannot read the sensor marks

  • Check whether the sheet is glossy, reflective, metallic, glittered, dark, embossed, or heavily patterned. Replace it temporarily with a light, matte, non-reflective stock.
  • Make sure the marks printed sharply and are not clipped, covered, smudged, or altered by scaling.
  • Confirm that the printer did not substitute a different page size or apply fit-to-page enlargement or reduction.
  • Reload the mat with the orientation and placement shown in Design Space.
  • For a glossy or reflective sheet, Cricut’s troubleshooting guidance mentions trying matte transparent tape over the marks. Treat this as a troubleshooting suggestion, not a guarantee; changing to compatible matte stock is usually the more dependable fix.

The machine reads the marks but cuts off-center

Run Print Then Cut calibration using the current guided process for your exact machine. Keep the calibration page at its original scale and use the specified portrait, black-ink, white copy paper setup. If the error appears only on one material, test a matte sheet to determine whether the surface is affecting the scan or sheet movement.

Return to the canvas, select the layers that should print together, and choose Flatten. Attach is not a substitute for flattening a layered image when the intended result is one external contour.

The print looks correct but the size is wrong

Check the page-size setting in Design Space and the printer dialog, then print again directly from Design Space. A PDF or image printed through another application may have been resized even if the artwork appears proportionally correct on screen.

  • Design Space
  • A Fine-Point Blade and housing matched to the machine
  • A LightGrip machine mat
  • Cricut Printable Sticker Paper

Printable sticker paper is the simplest test because its printer requirement is explicit. If you move to printable vinyl, printable iron-on, holographic stock, or another brand’s paper, verify both the printer requirement and the material’s optical compatibility with your machine. Match replacement blades and mats to the exact machine rather than assuming accessories are interchangeable across every Cricut family.

Quick decision guide before you press Print

Question If the answer is yes If the answer is no
Is the exact machine Print Then Cut compatible? Continue to material and page checks. Print Then Cut will not work on that machine; the original Cricut Joy is an example.
Is the stock rated for your printer type? Use the manufacturer’s print settings. Choose compatible stock; never put inkjet-only sticker paper in a laser printer.
Is the surface light or matte enough for strong mark contrast? Run a small test cut. Switch to a compatible matte, non-reflective material or test the sheet cautiously.
Does Design Space offer the selected page size? Keep that size in both Design Space and the printer dialog. Use a supported size even if the printer accepts larger paper.
Are you seeking one outer contour around layered art? Flatten the layers. Use the operation that matches the intended individual cuts.
Are marks detected but edges consistently offset? Calibrate the machine. If marks are not detected, troubleshoot visibility and material first.

What Print Then Cut can and cannot guarantee

Print Then Cut can align a printed design and a blade path when the page, marks, machine, and material all meet Cricut’s conditions. It does not make every printer, paper finish, page dimension, or machine generation interchangeable. Accuracy is also not a promise that every unfamiliar patterned or glossy sheet will work; Cricut recommends testing such materials.

The most reliable routine is therefore deliberate: use a supported machine, print through Design Space at the intended scale, choose stock with adequate sensor contrast, load it exactly as shown, and calibrate when the machine scans successfully but misses the printed edge.
