Valve Anti-Cheat (VAC) detects identifiable cheats on VAC-secured servers; Trusted Mode limits third-party file interaction; Trust Factor sorts players for matchmaking; reports provide signals; and penalties range from temporary cooldowns to communication restrictions, game bans, or permanent VAC bans. Valve does not publish the full detection or matchmaking formulas, so a report is not proof of cheating and cannot by itself cause a VAC ban.
The systems at a glance
These features are related, but they perform different jobs. Treating them as interchangeable leads to common misunderstandings, such as assuming a low Trust Factor is a ban or that every report is manually confirmed.

| System | Primary job | What can trigger it | Typical result |
|---|---|---|---|
| VAC | Automated cheat detection on VAC-secured servers | Identifiable cheat software or other detection signals | VAC ban; Valve describes VAC bans as permanent |
| Trusted Mode | Restrict third-party files from interacting with CS2 | Game launch and runtime policy | Reduced injection surface, not a guarantee that cheats fail |
| Trust Factor | Matchmaking quality and player grouping | Undisclosed history-based factors | Different opponents and teammates; no public score |
| Player reports | Send suspected cheating or conduct information to Valve | A player’s report through supported Steam or in-game routes | A signal used with other information, not an automatic ban |
| Competitive cooldown | Temporary restriction for match-related conduct or irregular play | Abandoning, being AFK, griefing reports, or VAC-detected irregular gameplay | Timed matchmaking lockout |
| Communication penalty | Limit abusive in-game communication | Communication-related reports and Valve’s assessment | Account is muted by default until the penalty is removed |
| Game ban | Enforce serious interference with game systems | Attempts to circumvent or interfere with systems, including cheating | Separate ban category from a VAC ban |
Valve’s public pages describe purposes and broad rules, but not the complete algorithms. The distinctions below are therefore more reliable than guesses based on a particular match or account.
What VAC does
Valve Anti-Cheat is the automated system used on VAC-secured servers. Valve says it looks for identifiable cheats installed on a player’s computer when that player connects to a protected server. The system is not described as a live referee that announces a decision during the match; detection and enforcement can involve signals gathered over time.

Valve’s clearest warning for reporters is: “Users are not VAC banned based on reports alone.” A report can supply information, but Valve says it considers other factors before issuing a VAC ban. You therefore cannot establish that one report caused a particular ban, that every report receives an individual investigation, or that a player who was reported will necessarily be banned.
Valve describes VAC bans as permanent and non-negotiable. If Valve’s systems determine that a VAC ban was issued incorrectly, the company says the ban is removed automatically after investigation. Steam Support does not manually remove or shorten a valid VAC ban. See Valve’s VAC explanation for the current policy.
What Trusted Mode changes in CS2
Trusted Mode is enabled by default for every Counter-Strike 2 player. Valve defines it as a launch and runtime mode that blocks third-party files from interacting with the game. The goal is to address file injections and similar interactions that can be used by cheat software.
This is a restriction on how software interacts with CS2, not a declaration that a computer is clean. Valve explicitly calls Trusted Mode a “minimal barrier” to cheat development and cautions that it does not prevent cheats from working. A player can therefore encounter suspicious behavior even when both players are using the default mode.

Because the mode is on by default, troubleshooting should begin with the software that is trying to hook into the game. Overlays, capture tools, or other utilities may need their own compatibility updates, but disabling security features should not be treated as an anti-cheat workaround. Valve’s current description is at CS2 – Trusted Mode.
How Trust Factor matchmaking works
Trust Factor is a matchmaking system, not a punishment and not a cheat verdict. Valve says it uses undisclosed factors associated broadly with a user’s past experience in Counter-Strike 2 and on Steam. The system can change over time as new information becomes available.
Valve does not publish the factor list and does not provide a personal Trust Factor number for players to inspect. That means there is no official “Trust Factor checker,” no published formula to optimize, and no reliable way to prove that a particular teammate has a low factor. A difficult match, repeated opponents, or a warning from a friend is not evidence of a specific score or of cheating.
When players queue as a party, Valve says matchmaking uses the lowest Trust Factor among party members. One account with a lower factor can therefore affect the group’s search, even if the other members have stronger histories. The official CS2 explanation is available at CS2 – Trust Factor Matchmaking. Valve’s older background article, The Trust Factor, discusses the concept historically in the context of CS:GO; it should not be read as a complete current CS2 formula.

How to report a suspected cheater
Valve says suspected cheaters can be reported through Steam Community or through the in-game reporting function. The supported general routes are documented in Reporting suspected cheaters.
- Use the current CS2 in-game reporting control. Open the player or match reporting interface provided by your current build, select the conduct that best describes the problem, and submit the report with the relevant player selected.
- Use the player’s Steam Community profile. Open the profile, choose the reporting option, select the appropriate reason, and provide the requested details.
- For community or unsecured servers, contact the administrator. Valve directs players to the server operator for cheating on servers that are not VAC-secured.
The Steam article includes detailed scoreboard controls for CS:GO. Valve’s page does not confirm that those exact keys, icons, or menu labels are unchanged in CS2, so do not rely on a CS:GO key sequence as a guaranteed current CS2 procedure. If the in-game route has moved, use the controls shown by your installed CS2 version or the Steam Support reporting page.
Does reporting someone get them banned?
No. A report is a signal for Valve’s systems and enforcement processes, not an automatic penalty. VAC bans are not issued from reports alone, and a report does not prove that the reported player used a cheat.

Valve can take no visible action for several reasons. Its communication-penalty guidance says that no action may mean Valve cannot corroborate the report or that current data does not support action. A player may also be investigated by automated systems without the reporter receiving a case-by-case explanation. Do not use the absence of an immediate ban as evidence that a report was ignored, and do not assume a later ban was caused by your specific report.

Competitive cooldowns: temporary restrictions
A competitive cooldown is different from a VAC ban. It temporarily prevents competitive matchmaking and can be caused by match conduct such as abandoning a game, being AFK, receiving too many griefing reports, or triggering VAC-detected irregular-gameplay enforcement. A cooldown is not, by itself, proof that an account contains cheat software.
Valve publishes these baseline non-VAC levels:
| Cooldown level | Published duration |
|---|---|
| First level | 30 minutes |
| Second level | 2 hours |
| Third level | 24 hours |
| Fourth level | 1 week |
Valve says these levels remain in place during a one-week probation period. A week of clean play reduces the level by one. VAC-related irregular-gameplay cooldowns last at least one day and increase the cooldown level. These are published rules that may change, not a promise that every account follows only the baseline sequence.
Steam Support says competitive cooldowns and bans are non-negotiable and cannot be manually removed or reduced. If Valve’s automated systems issue a cooldown incorrectly, Valve says its systems roll the penalty back automatically. The full policy is on CS2 – Competitive cooldowns and bans.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCommunication penalties and muting
A communication-penalized account is muted by default in CS2. This penalty concerns disruptive communication rather than the detection of cheat software. Valve says communication penalties resulting from in-game reports can be removed by earning XP on official Valve servers.
Best Value
The penalty can therefore affect what teammates hear from the account without being a VAC ban, game ban, or competitive cooldown. Valve also notes that no action on a communication report can mean the evidence is not corroborated or that available data does not currently support action. Read the current rules at CS2 – Communication Penalties.
Game bans versus VAC bans
A game ban is a separate enforcement category. Valve says it may impose one when a player attempts to circumvent or interfere with game systems, including cheating. The existence of a game ban does not change the definition of a VAC ban, and a temporary competitive cooldown is not a substitute name for either category.
For account-specific explanations, Valve directs players to its game-ban support information at CS2 – I’ve been game banned. Do not infer a ban type from a single match result or from another player’s claim; the categories have different triggers and handling.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →What you can and cannot check
You can check
- Whether your account currently displays a competitive cooldown, communication penalty, game ban, or VAC ban in the relevant Steam or CS2 account interfaces.
- The time remaining on an active temporary cooldown where Valve shows one.
- Your own match history and conduct so you can avoid abandoning, idling, or abusive communication.
You cannot check
- A numerical personal Trust Factor score.
- The complete list of Trust Factor inputs.
- Which individual report, if any, contributed to an enforcement action.
- The internal VAC detection evidence or timing for another player’s ban.
Because Valve keeps these inputs and detection details private, websites or users claiming to reveal an exact Trust Factor or guarantee a ban from a report are not using an official Valve measurement.
A practical way to interpret an incident
- You see suspicious play. Record the round, player name, and context if useful, but distinguish an unusual play from proof of a cheat.
- You submit a report. Use the current in-game or Steam Community route; use the server administrator for an unsecured or community server.
- Valve evaluates signals. Reports may be combined with automated detections and account or match data. A report alone does not create a VAC ban.
- An enforcement result appears, if warranted. The outcome could be no visible action, a communication penalty, a competitive cooldown, a game ban, or a VAC ban, depending on the rule and evidence involved.
- You receive a penalty. Check its category before drawing conclusions. A temporary cooldown has different rules from a permanent VAC ban, and a communication penalty primarily changes voice and text interaction.
The safest conclusion is narrow: report accurately, avoid harassment or mass-reporting, and treat Valve’s displayed penalty category as the authoritative description of what happened. Trust Factor is for matchmaking, Trusted Mode limits software interaction, VAC detects cheats, and reports provide information; none of those labels should be substituted for another.
