A compatibility layer lets a game compiled for one operating system use another system’s services without rewriting the game. For Windows games on Linux, Wine or Proton loads the original Windows executable, implements the Windows interfaces it expects, and maps those requests to Linux facilities. Graphics translators then convert Direct3D commands to Vulkan or OpenGL before the host driver sends work to the GPU. The game is still a Windows program; the surrounding interfaces are what change.
The basic translation path
A useful simplified path is:
Windows game → Windows-facing APIs (Wine/Proton) → graphics translator (DXVK or VKD3D-Proton) → host graphics API and driver → GPU

This is a model, not a literal call stack for every title. Some requests go through Wine implementations directly, some graphics calls take a specialized translation path, and other subsystems such as input use their own mappings.

The executable does not become a Linux program
Wine’s loader runs Windows binaries. The game’s machine code, file format and Windows assumptions remain intact. Wine supplies libraries that implement the Windows API and connect those calls to facilities available on the host, including POSIX interfaces on Linux. This differs from compiling the game’s source code into a native Linux build: no source conversion is required, and the game vendor’s Windows binary is the file being executed.

What “translation” means here
When a game asks Windows for a service, the compatibility layer receives that request through a Windows-compatible interface. It then performs an equivalent operation using the host system where possible, or supplies its own implementation when no direct host call exists. Saying that APIs are “translated or implemented for the host” is more accurate than claiming every Windows instruction is rewritten one-for-one. Internal game code normally continues to execute as compiled; the boundary between the game and the operating system is where most compatibility work occurs.
| Approach | What happens to the game | Typical cost and limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Compatibility layer | The original executable runs while expected operating-system APIs are reimplemented and mapped to host services. | Usually lower overhead than a complete guest operating system, but success depends on how completely each required interface behaves. |
| Virtual machine | A guest operating system runs in a virtual hardware environment, and the game runs inside that guest. | Provides a fuller Windows environment but adds a guest OS, memory and device-virtualization overhead; graphics access depends on the virtual machine’s device support. |
| Emulator | Software models another processor or machine and may interpret or translate instructions and devices. | Can reproduce a different hardware platform, but processor and device emulation can be substantially more expensive than API compatibility. |
| Native port | The developer builds a version specifically for the host operating system and its APIs. | Can use host facilities directly, but requires a separate port and does not run the original Windows binary. |
A compatibility layer can include translation of selected instructions or components, but it is not automatically a virtual machine or a full hardware emulator.
Where Proton fits
Proton is Valve’s Steam-focused compatibility tool for running Windows games on Linux. It combines a modified Wine base with game-oriented components and high-performance graphics implementations. Steam can select and launch Proton for a Windows title, so users generally interact with a game-specific compatibility setting rather than manually assembling every library.

Proton does not remove the underlying dependencies. The game still expects Windows behavior, and Proton must provide that behavior closely enough for the title, launcher and middleware involved. A game can therefore work with one Proton version and fail with another, or work on one driver and not another. Valve describes compatibility as ongoing work rather than a guarantee that every Windows game will run identically.
What happens when Steam starts a game
- Steam selects a Windows executable and a Proton runtime. Proton’s loader and libraries are placed in the launch path for that title.
- Windows-facing calls enter Wine or Proton implementations. Requests for processes, files, windows, synchronization and other services are handled by compatible libraries and mapped to Linux or to Proton’s own supporting code.
- Graphics calls are routed according to the game’s Direct3D version. Direct3D 9, 10 and 11 commonly use DXVK; Direct3D 12 uses VKD3D-Proton when that path is available.
- The host graphics stack takes over. Vulkan commands go to the installed Vulkan implementation and driver, which communicate with the physical GPU.
- Input and other devices follow their own mappings. Controller data may pass through interfaces such as DirectInput, HID, SDL and Linux joystick handling rather than through the graphics path.
- The game receives results in the form it expects. If timing, return values, device behavior or graphics features differ in a way the title cannot tolerate, launch or runtime failures can occur.
How graphics APIs are translated
Graphics translation is specialized because Direct3D and Vulkan expose different APIs, resource models and synchronization behavior. A translator converts the game’s graphics commands into a host API that the driver understands; it does not create GPU features that the hardware or driver lacks.
| Game-facing API | Compatibility component | Host API in the documented path | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct3D 9 | DXVK | Vulkan | Support still depends on the game’s actual features and the host Vulkan stack. |
| Direct3D 10 | DXVK | Vulkan | Nominal API mapping does not guarantee that every effect or middleware component works. |
| Direct3D 11 | DXVK | Vulkan | Driver quality, GPU capability and the specific DXVK/Proton version matter. |
| Direct3D 12 | VKD3D-Proton | Vulkan | It is a separate implementation from DXVK; DXVK should not be described as a Direct3D 12 translator. |
| Direct3D paths using WineD3D | WineD3D | OpenGL | Proton documents this as an alternative renderer, not as a universal speed or compatibility recommendation. |
Why the driver remains critical
DXVK and VKD3D-Proton can translate commands, but the host still needs a functioning Vulkan implementation for those routes. The GPU must expose the capabilities the translated workload requests, and the driver must implement them correctly. If the host lacks a required capability, a compatibility layer cannot supply it purely in software without changing the problem into a much more expensive emulation task. This is why the same game can behave differently across GPUs, driver releases and operating-system installations.

Choosing the OpenGL fallback
Proton’s repository documents an option that forces WineD3D’s OpenGL renderer instead of the Vulkan-based DXVK renderer. In Steam’s launch-options field, the documented form is:
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%
This is a diagnostic or compatibility choice for a particular setup. It changes the rendering route; it does not prove that OpenGL is generally faster, slower or more compatible. Compare the two paths only on the same game version, Proton version, driver and hardware, and judge the result by the failure you are trying to resolve.
Compatibility work beyond graphics
A game can render correctly and still fail because compatibility includes much more than Direct3D. Windows APIs cover process creation, memory, files, windows, synchronization, audio, networking, registry-like configuration and device access. Wine and Proton provide implementations for the interfaces a title uses, while the host supplies the underlying services where an equivalent exists.

Controller and input mapping
Controller handling illustrates the layered nature of the problem. A Windows game may read DirectInput or HID data, while Linux exposes joystick devices through host interfaces and applications may use SDL in between. Proton’s controller documentation discusses mappings among DirectInput, HID, SDL and Linux joystick handling. A controller that is visible to Linux is therefore not automatically presented to a game in the exact Windows format it expects; the compatibility stack must map identity, buttons, axes and events.
Launchers, middleware and protection systems
Games often start through an additional launcher or rely on middleware, copy protection or anti-cheat components. Each dependency adds another set of Windows behaviors and timing assumptions. A title can therefore fail before its renderer is used, or work in single-player while a network feature does not. Treat these as separate compatibility surfaces rather than assuming that a successful Direct3D translation proves the whole game is supported.
Why translation does not imply a fixed performance penalty
There is no universal rule that a compatibility layer must be slower than Windows. Translation adds work, but the amount and location of that work vary by API, driver, game engine and hardware. No controlled performance percentage or game-independent speed ranking is established, so claims that Proton is always faster or always slower are not justified.
Best Value
| Factor | How it can affect results |
|---|---|
| API and driver behavior | A translated Vulkan path may interact with the host driver differently from the game’s Windows Direct3D path. The outcome depends on both implementations. |
| Game engine workload | CPU-heavy, shader-heavy and streaming-heavy games stress different parts of the stack. One title’s bottleneck is not evidence about another. |
| Shader compilation and caching | Translation can introduce first-run work or stutter while shaders are prepared. Later runs may behave differently, so a single short test can mislead. |
| Host hardware and driver version | GPU features, CPU scheduling and Vulkan driver quality determine whether the translated workload is efficient. |
| Configuration | Changing Proton versions or switching from DXVK to WineD3D changes the implementation path. A result must be tied to the exact configuration. |
In some situations, a translated path can avoid a bottleneck present in a particular native driver stack or batch work in a way that suits the game. That is a possible engineering explanation for reports that Proton performs better than Windows in a specific title, not a general benchmark conclusion. A fair comparison records the same game build, settings, resolution, hardware, driver, background workload and measurement method.
How to diagnose a game that does not work
Use a controlled sequence so that each change answers one question.
- Confirm the game’s rendering API. Determine whether it uses Direct3D 9, 10, 11 or 12. Do not select a Direct3D 12 conclusion from a test of a Direct3D 11 mode.
- Verify the host graphics stack. Check that the GPU and installed driver provide the Vulkan capabilities required by the DXVK or VKD3D-Proton path. If Vulkan is unavailable or broken, a Vulkan translator cannot succeed.
- Try the Proton version supplied for the title. Record the exact version and keep other variables unchanged. Ongoing Proton development means behavior can change between releases.
- Separate launch failure from rendering failure. If the game never reaches a window, investigate launchers, missing Windows behavior, middleware or protection components before changing graphics settings.
- Test the documented WineD3D option when appropriate. Add
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%to Steam launch options and retest. This identifies whether the Vulkan rendering path is involved; it is not a promise of better performance. - Test input independently. Confirm that Linux sees the controller and that the game receives the expected DirectInput, HID, SDL or joystick events.
- Change one item at a time. Keep notes on game build, Proton version, driver, GPU, renderer and symptom. Without that record, a fix can be impossible to reproduce.
| Symptom | Likely area to investigate | Next controlled check |
|---|---|---|
| Nothing appears after launch | Launcher, missing API behavior, middleware or protection component | Test another Proton version and check whether the game reaches any diagnostic output before changing renderers. |
| Black screen or immediate graphics crash | Vulkan driver, unsupported feature or translation bug | Verify Vulkan support, then compare the default Vulkan route with WineD3D. |
| Game renders but a controller is unusable | Input-interface mapping | Check Linux joystick visibility and the game’s expected DirectInput, HID or SDL path. |
| Performance changes after an update | Proton, translator or driver version change | Record versions and retest the same settings before drawing a conclusion. |
What “compatible” should mean
Compatibility is a title-and-configuration result, not a permanent property of a label such as “Direct3D 11.” A meaningful verdict identifies the game version, Proton or Wine version, graphics translator, driver, GPU and operating system. It also states which modes were tested: launch, rendering, input, audio, online features and any required launcher.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Wine and Proton projects continue to implement missing behavior and fix regressions. Wine’s release listing currently identifies Wine 11.0 as stable and Wine 11.19 as a development release dated October 2, 2026; those labels are time-sensitive and should be checked again when selecting a version. A development release may contain a fix you need or a regression you do not, so the newest number is not automatically the best choice.
Where commercial support fits
Wine is free software. Wine’s project information also identifies CodeWeavers as a commercial sponsor offering a supported version of Wine. Commercial support can matter to organizations that need assistance or a curated release, but it does not change the basic architecture: the Windows program still runs through compatibility implementations that map its expected interfaces to the host.
The practical takeaway
Compatibility layers translate the contracts around a game rather than converting the game into a different operating-system binary. Wine or Proton supplies Windows-facing behavior, DXVK and VKD3D-Proton translate specific Direct3D generations to Vulkan, WineD3D offers an OpenGL route, and the host driver ultimately determines what the GPU can execute. Because every layer and game feature participates in the result, working support and performance must be evaluated for the exact title and software-hardware combination rather than inferred from the API name alone.
