College basketball does not have one NCAA-wide injury designation system for every game. The NCAA’s 2026 Division I men’s and women’s championship pilot uses available, questionable, and out; conference policies set their own rules. The NBA, by contrast, has a league-wide reporting requirement that covers specified health and rest circumstances and follows its own filing schedule. Similar labels should not be assumed to mean the same thing across leagues.
Why college basketball has no single set of designations
“College basketball injury report” can refer to different policies. The NCAA’s 2026 Division I men’s and women’s championship availability-report program is a pilot for those tournaments, not a universal rule for college games. Regular-season reporting can instead be governed by a conference policy. The SEC and ACC, for example, publish conference-specific procedures.

That distinction matters when interpreting a player’s status: identify the competition, conference, and season before treating a label or deadline as definitive.

For 2026 Division I men’s and women’s championship contests, the NCAA uses three labels. Players are presumed available unless they are listed as questionable or out. The NCAA describes the program as a pilot and said it would not apply to other NCAA championships during 2025–26 while it evaluates the system.

| Questionable | Up to a 75% chance the player will participate. |
| Out | The player will not participate. |
These are policy categories, not measured injury rates or guarantees about what happens during a game. Under the NCAA’s filing schedule, teams submit an initial report by 9 p.m. local time at the competition venue on the night before a game and update it no later than two hours before scheduled tip.
The NCAA says the pilot is intended in part to reduce betting-related pressure, solicitations, and harassment involving players’ playing status. That stated aim does not mean reporting eliminates those harms.

How conference rules can differ: SEC and ACC examples
SEC men’s basketball, 2025–26
The SEC’s policy for 2025–26 conference contests uses a wider set of statuses than the NCAA championship pilot. Before game day, its labels are tied to stated participation chances:

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →| SEC pregame-day status | Chance of participation specified by the SEC |
|---|---|
| Out | 0% |
| Doubtful | 25% |
| Questionable | 50% |
| Probable | 75% |
On game day, the SEC instead uses available, game-time decision, and out. A game-time decision means coaches or medical personnel need to evaluate the player during pregame warmups. If a player previously appeared on a report but is later expected to participate, the SEC requires the team to mark that player available; players not listed are generally treated as available unless an exemption applies.

SEC reports cover more than injuries: a player’s participation may be affected by illness, suspension, ineligibility, or personal matters. The policy also allows exemptions for certain players not expected to participate or who rarely play in minimal competition; when uncertain, institutions are instructed to include the athlete. It requires good-faith reporting and prohibits misleading status comments.
For the SEC’s 2025–26 policy, the usual initial report is due by 7 p.m. CT / 8 p.m. ET the night before a contest. A game-day update is due no later than two hours before scheduled start. If a team played the previous day, a special deadline applies: 11 a.m. local time or two hours before the game, whichever is earlier.

ACC, 2025–26
The ACC’s 2025–26 basketball information provides another conference example. It lists available, probable, questionable, doubtful, and out before game day, then available, game-time decision, and out on game day. Reports are submitted the night before and two hours before the scheduled game, with an exception for consecutive-day schedules. The ACC example reinforces that college labels and deadlines depend on the applicable conference policy.
How the NBA injury-report schedule differs
The NBA’s official 2025–26 rules require teams to report injuries, illnesses, other medical conditions, or rest when a player’s participation may be affected. Its schedule includes a previous-day deadline and, in most cases, an additional game-day report:

| NBA reporting point | 2025–26 timing |
|---|---|
| Usual report | By 5 p.m. local time the day before the game. |
| Second game of a back-to-back | By 1 p.m. local time on game day. |
| Additional game-day report | Between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. local time; for games tipping off at 5 p.m. or earlier, between 8 and 10 a.m. local time. This additional report is excepted on the second night of a back-to-back. |
The NBA says reports are updated continually through the day. These are the league’s specified reporting windows; they are not the NCAA championship pilot’s night-before and two-hours-before-tip schedule.
Quick Recap
Side-by-side: scope, labels, and deadlines
| Comparison | College basketball examples | NBA, 2025–26 |
|---|---|---|
| Governing structure | NCAA championship pilot plus separate conference policies; no single regular-season system is established by these examples. | League-wide injury-report requirement. |
| What can be reported | The NCAA pilot reports availability. SEC conference reporting can include injury, illness, suspension, ineligibility, and personal matters. | Injury, illness, other medical condition, or rest when participation may be affected. |
| Labels | NCAA pilot: available, questionable, out. SEC pregame day: out, doubtful, questionable, probable; game day: available, game-time decision, out. | The official page cited here requires a participation status but does not define the meaning of each status label. |
| Timing | NCAA pilot: by 9 p.m. venue-local time the night before and update by two hours before tip. SEC: usually 7 p.m. CT / 8 p.m. ET the night before and update by two hours before; a prior-game-day exception applies. | Usually by 5 p.m. local time the day before, with a specified game-day report window and a different deadline for the second game of a back-to-back. |
| Default and updates | NCAA championship players are presumed available unless marked questionable or out. SEC rules require an affirmative available status in certain return-to-report situations. | Reports are updated continually. Do not apply the NCAA presumption to NBA players. |
How to read a status without over-interpreting it
- Check the governing policy. A college status might come from an NCAA championship rule or a conference policy, and those systems are not interchangeable.
- Separate participation status from its reason. A report may concern illness, rest, eligibility, or another factor as well as injury.
- Read the timing in context. A filing deadline is not a promise that a player’s status cannot change afterward; the NBA describes reports as continually updated.
- Do not translate labels across organizations. The available official NBA page establishes reporting scope and timing but does not define every NBA status label. “Questionable” or “out” in one policy should not be treated as a formally equivalent category in another.
