Depending on the contract, it may be money the school owes a coach after ending the agreement without cause, money the coach owes after leaving for certain basketball jobs, or both. To understand a clause, check who ends the contract, what triggers payment, how the amount is calculated, and who receives it.
What a coaching buyout can mean
“Buyout” is often used loosely. In a contract, the relevant provision may be called liquidated damages or describe a payment tied to the remaining contract term. The label alone does not tell you which party pays.

- School-to-coach payment: The school ends employment without cause and owes the coach an amount specified by the agreement.
- Coach-to-school payment: The coach resigns to take certain other basketball employment and owes the school a contractually defined amount.
Some agreements address both situations separately. Missouri State’s agreement for men’s coach Cuonzo Martin separates a school termination without cause from coach-side liquidated damages for specified departures: Missouri State contract records. These are negotiated terms, not a universal template.

What happens when a school fires a coach?
First determine whether the school invokes a for-cause provision or exercises a separate right to terminate without cause. Those routes can have different procedures and financial consequences.
#1 Best Overall
Termination for cause
Read the agreement’s definition of cause, any notice and opportunity-to-cure provisions, who decides whether cause exists, and any university or athletics rules incorporated into the contract. A poor win-loss record does not automatically constitute cause unless the agreement makes it so. Nebraska’s Fred Hoiberg agreement refers to “Adequate Cause” and incorporates athletics procedures; the Texas A&M System’s description of an agreement for coach Steve Lutz lists breach and conduct-related grounds: Hoiberg agreement and Texas A&M System records.
Termination without cause
This is a contract-authorized termination that does not rely on the specified cause standard. The school may owe a payment under the agreement, but the formula varies. Missouri State’s Martin agreement ties the school-side buyout to amounts owed for the agreement term. The Texas A&M System’s Lutz record describes remaining-term base salary and a mitigation duty. Those examples should not be treated as interchangeable formulas.

When a coach may owe money for leaving
A coach-side payment may apply only when the resignation meets a defined trigger, such as accepting another basketball job. Nebraska’s Hoiberg agreement sets a schedule for specified basketball employment and says damages do not apply to resignation for other reasons. Amy Williams’s Nebraska agreement ties its schedule to accepting other employment related to college or professional basketball. Both illustrate date-based amounts that decline over time; the exact trigger and schedule are agreement-specific: Hoiberg agreement and Williams agreement.

The term by itself does not determine how a clause would be treated in a dispute; that question can depend on the contract and applicable law.

How to compare the real cost of two clauses
A headline buyout figure can omit conditions that materially change what is paid. Compare the operative terms, not just the largest number mentioned in a news story.
- Identify the trigger and direction. Who ends the agreement, what event triggers payment, and does money go from school to coach or coach to school?
- Read the formula and schedule. Is it a fixed sum, a date-based declining schedule, or compensation remaining through the term? Which salary, bonuses, or other compensation count?
- Check mitigation and offsets. Must the coach make reasonable efforts to find work? Does subsequent compensation reduce school payments, and what income qualifies?
- Check timing. Is payment a lump sum or installments, and when do payments begin?
- Read exceptions and procedural conditions. Look for excluded resignation reasons, notice, cure, release, documentation, or approval requirements.
- Check institutional rules. Board or system policies may govern approval or limit certain clauses.
Kansas State’s 2023 agreement for Jerome Tang illustrates why the schedule matters: it provides for scheduled payments over 24 months, dollar-for-dollar offsets for qualifying subsequent compensation, and reasonable efforts to obtain subsequent employment at an actual market rate. The provisions should be read together rather than treating the scheduled amount as an unconditional lump sum: Kansas State agreement.

What public-university policies may add
Institutional rules can affect whether a contract is approved and how a school-side buyout is structured. University of North Carolina System Policy 1100.3 states that a contract longer than one year for a head athletic coach or athletic director is not valid until its terms receive board of trustees approval. It also addresses a specified category of institution-paid buyout: the clause may not exceed remaining base salary plus bonuses or deferred compensation already earned or vested, and it must have a clearly discernible relationship to likely actual financial loss. This is a UNC System policy example, not a nationwide rule. Check the current policy text and the relevant institution’s rules: UNC System Policy 1100.3.

What to verify in the actual agreement
Public contract examples show how different the terms can be, but they do not establish a national average or standard buyout. Before relying on a figure, verify the executed agreement, its execution date and term, any amendments, the clause’s precise trigger and formula, and applicable institutional rules and law. A public record or contract summary may not include every amendment or resolve how a clause would apply in a particular dispute.
