Short answer: a regular Coinbase.com account is a consumer hosted wallet, while Coinbase Prime is an institutional platform. Prime Custody is one Prime portfolio type: assets stay with Coinbase Custody Trust Company (CCTC), which Coinbase identifies as a New York Department of Financial Services-regulated qualified custodian, while the client can trade and finance from that custody structure. The two products differ in who they serve, how custody is organized, what services are bundled, and which legal entity contracts with the client.
The word “account” can cause confusion. Coinbase.com, Coinbase Prime, Prime Custody, Prime Vault, Prime Trading and the separate Coinbase Wallet app are different products. The comparison below keeps those names distinct so you can identify what actually applies to your assets.

What a regular Coinbase account actually is
Coinbase describes Coinbase.com as a centralized exchange. Assets held there sit in a hosted digital asset wallet assigned to the account, and Coinbase says it maintains the wallet’s private keys. In practical terms, you use Coinbase’s consumer interface and account controls rather than holding the private keys in a wallet that you administer directly.

It describes the relationship to the assets; it does not mean a Coinbase.com account is self-custody. The platform still controls the private keys for the hosted wallet. Do not confuse Coinbase.com with Coinbase Wallet
The cited Coinbase.com policy expressly excludes the separate Coinbase Wallet app. Coinbase Wallet is a self-custody product with a different key-management model. Therefore, “regular Coinbase account” should mean the hosted Coinbase.com exchange account in this comparison, not every product carrying the Coinbase name.
What Coinbase Prime and Prime Custody are
Coinbase presents Coinbase Prime as an institutional platform for trading, custody, financing and related operational workflows. It is not a retail Coinbase.com login with an upgraded custody switch. Prime uses an institutional account hierarchy: an organization is the top-level account, an entity is the investment vehicle that contracts with Coinbase, and a portfolio is a pool of assets with trading and vault balances. One organization can contain multiple entities, and an entity can contain multiple portfolios. Coinbase explains this structure at its organization, entity and portfolio guide.
Prime Custody is a particular Prime brokerage portfolio type, not a synonym for the entire Prime platform. Coinbase describes it as “not a standalone storage product, but a full prime brokerage portfolio type.” The defining feature is that trading and financing can occur while assets remain within CCTC, the qualified custodian identified by Coinbase.
Prime Custody versus Prime Vault
Prime offers more than one custody arrangement:
- Prime Custody: trading and financing are available within the qualified-custody structure.
- Prime Vault: custody-only. Coinbase says assets must be swept out of the vault before they can be traded.
That operational difference matters. A client using Vault must plan a transfer from the custody-only balance before execution, whereas a Prime Custody portfolio is designed to support execution and financing without that sweep step.
Prime Trading is another distinct portfolio
Coinbase’s comparison distinguishes Prime Trading from Prime Custody by the custodian. Both provide trading and financing functionality, but Prime Trading assets are not held in CCTC. Consequently, “Prime” alone does not tell you which legal entity is the custodian; the portfolio type and agreement do.

Does Prime Custody mean Coinbase holds your crypto?
It means the assets are held in a custody arrangement operated through CCTC rather than in a self-managed wallet controlled by the client. Coinbase identifies CCTC as a qualified custodian and says Prime Custody lets clients trade and finance while their assets remain within that custodian. That is different from a consumer account only in scale and structure; neither description gives the client direct possession of the platform’s private keys.

However, the word “qualified” should be read as Coinbase’s description of its product and named legal entity, not as a universal legal conclusion for every customer, asset or advisory arrangement. Coinbase says a third-party legal opinion is available to certain clients under a nondisclosure agreement. That private opinion is not a public ruling that every Prime Custody arrangement satisfies every jurisdiction’s requirement.
What “legally segregated, operationally commingled” means
Coinbase says Prime Custody uses an omnibus wallet structure that is legally segregated but operationally commingled. In plain language, the wallet is not separated on-chain into a unique address for every client. Instead, client interests are tracked within a shared operational wallet structure while the legal arrangement is intended to distinguish client assets from the custodian’s own property.
This description does not, by itself, resolve insolvency treatment, creditor rights, settlement timing or any other legal question. Those issues depend on the governing agreement, the contracting entity, applicable law and the specific asset. If those points affect your organization, obtain advice from counsel and review the Prime documentation for your entity.

Why the wallet model matters in daily operations
Hosted Coinbase.com wallet
For Coinbase.com, the relevant practical fact is key control: Coinbase maintains the private keys for the hosted wallet associated with your account. You interact through account authentication and the consumer trading interface. The public policy page does not specify an institutional omnibus or per-client address model for that product, so it should not be used to infer one.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Prime Custody omnibus wallet
Prime Custody’s LSOC model is designed for institutional operations rather than a retail wallet address for every customer. Because there is no per-client on-chain segregation, blockchain explorers will not necessarily show a unique address containing only your organization’s assets. Internal books, controls and the legal agreement are therefore important parts of how the custody relationship is administered.
Prime Vault dedicated address
Coinbase says Prime Vault uses a dedicated address. Vault is custody-only, so the security and separation model comes with a workflow cost: assets must be swept before trading. Prime Custody makes the opposite trade-off by keeping assets in the qualified-custody structure while enabling trading and financing.
Eligibility, entities and geography
Prime access is not universal. Coinbase says the contracting entity depends on the Prime product, the institution’s country of incorporation and other business needs. Its listed options include U.S. and Luxembourg entities, but eligibility varies by country. The entity you contract with can affect available services, custody arrangements and onboarding requirements.

Supported assets and trading pairs
Coinbase’s Prime supported-assets page reports more than 275 digital assets and more than 340 trading pairs at the platform level. The page labels its unrestricted list as indicative and says it was last updated in Q3 2026. Coinbase also warns that availability varies by geography and custody entity. Those figures are therefore not a promise that every client can trade every listed asset.
Asset availability can differ between a trading portfolio and a custody portfolio, and an asset may have network, settlement or eligibility restrictions. Check the live list for the exact entity and portfolio during onboarding at Coinbase’s supported cryptocurrencies and trading pairs page. Recheck it before committing to an investment mandate because counts and availability can change.
How to determine which product you actually have
- Identify the interface and agreement. A consumer Coinbase.com login points to the hosted-account model. Institutional documentation, an organization profile and an entity agreement point to Prime.
- Find the portfolio name. Ask whether the balance is in Prime Custody, Prime Vault or Prime Trading. “Prime” by itself is too broad to answer the custody question.
- Confirm the custodian. For Prime Custody, verify that the agreement identifies CCTC. For Prime Trading, do not assume CCTC holds the assets.
- Check the trading workflow. Prime Custody permits trading and financing within the custody structure; Prime Vault requires a sweep before trading.
- Review the wallet description. Determine whether the arrangement uses an omnibus LSOC wallet or a dedicated Vault address, and understand what records demonstrate your organization’s interest.
- Verify jurisdiction and assets. Confirm the contracting entity, country eligibility, enabled assets, networks and trading pairs for your specific organization.
- Read the fee and risk terms. The available product descriptions do not provide a directly comparable Coinbase.com-versus-Prime fee schedule. Use the current consumer terms or the applicable Prime agreement rather than assuming one pricing model applies to both.
Security controls are separate from custody type
Institutional onboarding materials include guidance for registering a YubiKey security key on Prime and a USB-A versus USB-C connector comparison. A hardware security key can strengthen login and approval controls, but it does not change who controls the custody wallet, turn a custodial account into self-custody or determine whether assets are held in Prime Custody, Vault or Trading. Check your organization’s approved device, connector and recovery procedures before registering one.

Common misconceptions to avoid
- “Prime is just Coinbase.com for larger accounts.” Prime has organizations, contracting entities and portfolios, with institutional services and eligibility rules.
- “Prime Custody and Prime Vault are interchangeable.” Custody supports trading and financing in place; Vault requires a sweep before trading.
- “A Coinbase account always means self-custody.” Coinbase.com is hosted, and Coinbase says it maintains the private keys. The separate Coinbase Wallet app is a different product.
- “A dedicated address proves Prime Custody.” Coinbase says dedicated addresses describe Vault; Prime Custody uses an omnibus LSOC structure.
- “The platform-wide asset count guarantees access.” More than 275 assets and more than 340 pairs are indicative platform figures, qualified by geography and custody entity.
- “Qualified custodian settles every legal question.” The designation is product- and entity-specific; your agreement and applicable law still govern your situation.
Which model fits a particular need?
Choose a regular Coinbase.com account when
You are using the consumer platform and need a straightforward hosted account for personal or ordinary business activity. You accept that Coinbase maintains the private keys and that consumer terms, rather than institutional portfolio documentation, govern the relationship.

Consider Prime Custody when
Your institution needs institutional execution and financing while keeping assets within the CCTC custody structure. Confirm that your entity and jurisdiction are eligible and that the portfolio agreement provides the controls, reporting and asset support you require.
Consider Prime Vault when
Your priority is custody-only storage with a dedicated address and you can tolerate sweeping assets out before trading. Vault’s workflow is intentionally less immediate than Prime Custody’s.
Ask about Prime Trading when
You need Prime trading and financing functionality but are evaluating a custody arrangement other than CCTC. Confirm the named custodian and the legal terms rather than inferring them from the Prime brand.
Questions to put in writing before onboarding
- Which Coinbase entity will sign our agreement, and why is that entity eligible for our incorporation country?
- Is our portfolio Prime Custody, Prime Vault or Prime Trading?
- Who is the custodian for each balance, and does CCTC hold it?
- Is the wallet structure omnibus/LSOC or a dedicated address?
- Can we trade and finance without moving assets, or is a sweep required?
- Which assets, networks and pairs are enabled for our geography and custody entity?
- What records show our organization’s asset interests and transaction history?
- Which fees, settlement rules, withdrawal controls and approval procedures apply?
- What happens to access, transfers and collateral if a feature or asset becomes unavailable?
Those answers, rather than the word “Coinbase” alone, tell you how your assets are held and how the account operates.
