The connection starts on your side: cloudflared connects out to Cloudflare, and Cloudflare sends matching requests back through that established tunnel to the service you chose. That changes the route into your network; it does not automatically make the application private or secure.
How the traffic gets to your service
The route is: browser → public hostname → Cloudflare network → established tunnel → local service. You run cloudflared on a machine that can reach the service. It establishes outbound, encrypted connections to Cloudflare. When someone requests a hostname you have configured, Cloudflare forwards the request through those connections to the local service URL.

For this tunnel path, your service does not need to accept unsolicited connections from the internet, so you do not need to forward a router port to it. The service still needs to be running and reachable from the machine running cloudflared.

Cloudflare describes its Tunnel connections as post-quantum encrypted. That is a statement about the connection between cloudflared and Cloudflare; it should not be taken as a claim that every part of your application or network is thereby secured.

What you need to publish an application
- A Cloudflare account and a domain on Cloudflare.
- An internet-connected server or virtual machine that can run
cloudflared. - A service running locally or elsewhere on a network the machine can reach, plus its service URL—for example,
http://localhost:8080.
Cloudflare’s guided setup creates a tunnel and a published-application route. The route pairs a public hostname, such as app.example.com, with the service URL. The hostname tells Cloudflare which requests belong on that route; the service URL tells cloudflared where to send them.
Set up the route
- Choose a machine for
cloudflared. Install and run it on a host that has internet access and can reach the application. The application can run on that same host or another machine reachable from it. - Create a tunnel in Cloudflare’s guided setup. Follow the setup flow to connect the host running
cloudflaredto your Cloudflare account. - Add a published-application route. Enter the public hostname you want to use and the local service address. Cloudflare’s guide gives
http://localhost:80andhttps://localhost:443as examples for local web services; use the address and protocol that match your actual service. - Check the application and route. Confirm the service is running, that the
cloudflaredhost can reach the configured URL, and that the hostname points to the intended route. Then try the hostname from a browser.
Firewall requirements: outbound is not inbound
“No inbound ports” does not mean the tunnel needs no network access. Cloudflare documents outbound connectivity on port 7844, using TCP or UDP depending on the transport. A restrictive outbound firewall can block the tunnel from connecting.

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
Port 7844 is for the host’s outbound connection to Cloudflare. It is not a router port to forward from the internet. Cloudflare’s configuration guidance also describes blocking ingress when using a positive security model, while allowing the required outbound connectivity.

A tunnel does not decide who may use the app
A published hostname can make an application reachable by the public. The tunnel provides a path to the origin; it does not, by itself, require visitors to identify themselves. If the app should be limited to you or selected users, configure Cloudflare Access policies as a separate identity and access-control layer.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
Think of the choices separately: the tunnel answers how does traffic reach the service?; an access policy answers who is allowed to reach it? Application-level authentication and sound configuration still matter too.
What the connection figures mean
Cloudflare’s documentation describes the tunnel’s connections and replicas as follows. These are vendor-documented architecture and configuration figures, not independent performance measurements or a guarantee of uptime.

When this approach fits—and where it stops
A tunnel is a useful fit when you can run a persistent outbound connector on a machine that reaches your service, allow the required egress, and use a domain on Cloudflare for the public hostname. It avoids making the origin accept inbound internet connections for traffic delivered through that tunnel.
It does not remove every security concern. Other exposed services, public hostnames, weak credentials, application vulnerabilities, and paths within your local network remain relevant. Cloudflare also documents Cloudflare One Tunnel use for private-network access and traffic filtering; that is a broader use case than publishing a web application hostname.
Best Value
- Dual band router upgrades to 1200 Mbps high speed internet (300mbps for 2.4GHz plus 900Mbps for 5GHz), reducing buffering and ideal for 4K stream
- Full Gigabit Ports - Gigabit Router with 4 Gigabit LAN ports, ideal for any internet plan and allow you to directly connect your wired devices
- Boosted Coverage - Four external antennas equipped with Beamforming technology extend and concentrate the Wi-Fi signals
- MU-MIMO technology - (5GHz band) allows high speeds for multiple devices simultaneously
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
For non-HTTP services such as SSH, TCP, or RDP, Cloudflare’s setup guidance says the client side also needs cloudflared. Do not assume that publishing a web hostname makes those services usable through an ordinary browser connection.
