How Cloud Gaming Works—and Why Internet Speed Is Not the Only Factor

Cloud gaming runs the game on a remote computer and streams the result to your screen. Your controller, keyboard, mouse or touch input travels to a data center; the remote machine simulates the game, renders the next frame, encodes the audio and video, and sends that stream back. Because you are continuously changing what the next frame must show, cloud gaming is an interactive control loop rather than ordinary video playback.

That is why a fast download result does not automatically mean responsive play. Capacity, distance to the service, latency variation, packet loss, Wi-Fi conditions, remote processing, decoding, your controller and your display all contribute to the time between an action and the visible result.

What actually happens when you play in the cloud

In a locally installed game, the computer or console receives your input and performs the simulation, rendering and display work nearby. Cloud gaming moves most of that work to a remote server. The client device primarily captures input, receives a compressed audiovisual stream, decodes it and displays it.

  1. Input capture: A button press, mouse movement, keyboard command or touch gesture is recorded by the client device.
  2. Upstream transmission: That input travels through your home network and the internet to the gaming service.
  3. Remote game loop: The service processes the input, advances the game simulation and renders a new frame on its server hardware.
  4. Encoding: The rendered frames and game audio are compressed into a stream suitable for your selected resolution and frame rate.
  5. Downstream delivery: The encoded stream travels back to your device.
  6. Decode and display: Your device decodes the stream and your display presents the frame.

The loop repeats many times per second. Cloud-gaming architecture separates platform-administration traffic, platform-management functions such as network diagnosis and server selection, and the gameplay flow itself. For a player, the important point is that gameplay depends on a two-way exchange: your action must arrive before the relevant simulation step, and the resulting frame must return before you can see its effect.

In ordinary video streaming, buffering can hide a short network interruption because the viewer is not changing the content. Cloud gaming cannot safely build a large buffer without making controls feel delayed. Small delays, and especially changes in delay from one moment to the next, therefore become visible as sluggish controls, missed timing windows or uneven camera movement.

Bandwidth, latency and jitter are different problems

Internet plans usually advertise download bandwidth, measured in megabits per second (Mbps). Bandwidth is the connection’s carrying capacity. It must be sufficient for the chosen resolution, frame rate and stream quality. If capacity is inadequate, the service may lower image quality, stutter or disconnect.

Bandwidth does not tell you how long a packet takes to reach the server, whether packets arrive at a steady interval, or how long your device takes to decode and display a frame. Those are separate parts of the experience.

Latency: the travel time for an action

Latency is the time required for data to travel between your device and the service. Physical distance to the data center, internet routing, the access network, your Wi-Fi link and queues inside the network all affect it. Microsoft identifies distance, internet speed, connection type and hardware as latency factors. A geographically distant server can therefore feel slower than a nearby server even when both connections show the same download speed.

Jitter: when latency keeps changing

Jitter is variation in latency from packet to packet. A stable 45-millisecond path can feel more predictable than a path that alternates between 20 and 100 milliseconds. The average may look acceptable while the changing timing produces inconsistent aiming, camera movement or button response. Microsoft specifically identifies this variation as jitter.

Packet loss and congestion

Packets can be delayed, discarded or retransmitted when a route is congested. Competing traffic from video calls, uploads, downloads, cloud backups or other household devices can consume capacity and increase queues. A service may respond by reducing stream quality, but that does not remove the underlying delay. Tests reported at IFIP Networking 2024 deliberately tested restricted bandwidth and added latency on two cloud-gaming services and observed different adaptation behavior. Those observations describe the tested services and conditions; they are not a universal ranking or a diagnosis of every player’s connection.

Processing and display delay

The end-to-end interval also includes the game’s simulation step, server-side rendering, video encoding, client decoding, controller communication and display scan-out. Microsoft describes latency as arising from multiple stages, including the game loop, encoding and decoding and device-specific factors. A fast internet path cannot eliminate delay added by a busy client device, a wireless controller or a television running heavy picture processing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The practical result is an inference from these stages: a high advertised speed can coexist with poor responsiveness when the route is long or unstable, the local wireless link is congested, or processing and display add substantial time. No single factor is always responsible.

Why there is no universal “good speed” number

Requirements depend on the service, client device, browser or app, target resolution, frame rate and sometimes membership tier. Use the current requirement page for the exact service and device rather than combining figures into one rule.

Service information Published figure How to interpret it
GeForce NOW 15 Mbps for HD resolutions up to 60 FPS An example requirement on NVIDIA’s current requirements page, with values varying by device and stream target.
GeForce NOW 25 Mbps for Full HD at 60 FPS An example for 1080p-class streaming on several device categories, not a guarantee of responsiveness.
GeForce NOW Less than 80 ms network latency from an NVIDIA data center A stated service requirement. It is not a promise of comfortable end-to-end latency because encoding, decoding, input and display still add time.
Xbox Cloud Gaming 10 Mbps minimum download speed The current cloud-gaming page’s minimum; some devices may need more for best quality.
Xbox Cloud Gaming 20 Mbps on some devices for best quality A device-dependent quality recommendation, not a universal threshold.

Xbox recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi and notes that games, features and availability vary over time, by region, Game Pass plan and platform. NVIDIA separates requirements by device and stream target. Check support for your browser or app, operating system, controller and desired resolution before troubleshooting network speed.

How to diagnose lag, in the right order

Work from the service and the local connection outward. Buying hardware before identifying the limiting step can leave the real problem untouched.

  1. Confirm service and device support. Open the service’s current requirements page and verify your device category, browser or app version, supported resolution and frame-rate target. Check regional and plan restrictions, especially for catalog access and cloud availability.
  2. Run the service’s own network check or overlay. If the app reports latency, packet loss or a selected data center, record those values during an actual session. A general speed test measures a nearby test server and may not represent the route used by your gaming session.
  3. Measure stability during play. Watch for spikes rather than relying only on an average. Note whether symptoms occur at particular times of day, when another household device starts an upload, or only in one game or region.
  4. Prefer Ethernet when practical. NVIDIA recommends a hardwired Ethernet connection or a router using 5 GHz Wi-Fi. A cable can remove interference and contention on the local wireless hop, but it cannot shorten the physical route to a distant data center or remove server-side and display delay.
  5. If using Wi-Fi, select 5 GHz and reduce local obstacles. Microsoft notes that 2.4 GHz connections often have more latency than 5 GHz. Place the device near the access point, avoid unnecessary repeaters and test while other wireless devices are quiet.
  6. Stop competing traffic temporarily. Pause large downloads, uploads, cloud synchronization and high-bitrate video on the same connection. If performance improves, congestion is part of the problem; you may need traffic scheduling or a better-managed home network rather than a higher headline speed.
  7. Check the input path. Use a controller supported by the service and client. Xbox supports Bluetooth controllers, mobile touch controls and mouse-and-keyboard input for select games; compatibility is game- and platform-dependent. A different controller can fix pairing or local input issues, but it cannot cure internet latency.
  8. Check the display. Test the device screen or television in its low-latency or game mode, and compare with another display if possible. Disable unnecessary image-processing features while diagnosing. This isolates display processing from network behavior.
  9. Compare another server region or time window when the service allows it. A large difference points toward distance or routing, while identical behavior across regions suggests a local link, client or display issue. Do not infer a permanent service ranking from a single session.

Keep notes on the game, device, connection type, selected region, reported latency and time of day. That record helps distinguish a repeatable route problem from an isolated congestion event.

Connection choices and what they can—and cannot—fix

Change Can help with Cannot fix
Ethernet cable Wireless interference, retransmissions and local Wi-Fi contention Distance to the data center, ISP routing, server workload or display processing
5 GHz Wi-Fi Often lower local latency than 2.4 GHz and less interference in suitable range Weak signal through walls, congested backhaul, distant servers or client decoding time
Higher download tier Insufficient capacity at a chosen resolution or frame rate Route latency, jitter, controller delay and a slow display
New controller Compatibility, pairing or worn-input problems Internet delay between the client and the game server
New router A demonstrably weak or congested local wireless network Problems outside your home network; it is not a guaranteed latency upgrade

An Ethernet cable is a sensible low-cost test because it removes one variable. A 5 GHz router is conditional: it is worthwhile when your existing wireless setup is the bottleneck, not as an automatic solution for every cloud-gaming session.

How to compare cloud-gaming services or setups

There is no established independent ranking that predicts the fastest experience for every region, game, device and current service version. Compare the conditions that actually determine your session.

  • Regional latency and consistency: How far is the service’s available data center, and do its diagnostics show stable timing?
  • Capacity at your target settings: Can your connection sustain the desired resolution and frame rate without quality drops?
  • Local connection options: Does the device support Ethernet, and is reliable 5 GHz Wi-Fi available?
  • Client and input support: Check operating systems, browsers, smart-TV or mobile support, controllers and whether a particular game accepts touch or mouse-and-keyboard input.
  • Catalog, plan and geography: Xbox states that games and features vary by time, region, plan and platform. Confirm access for your account and location instead of assuming a catalog is universal.
  • Stream adaptation: Services may react differently to restricted bandwidth or added latency. IFIP Networking 2024 results found such differences under controlled conditions, but those results should be treated as evidence of differing behavior, not a permanent winner.

Name the region, device, game, settings and date whenever you report a comparison. Without those qualifiers, “faster” can mean only that one test happened on a shorter or less congested route.

Which games expose delay most clearly?

Every cloud game has the same input-to-frame loop, but players notice its delay differently. Games requiring immediate, precise reactions—such as competitive shooters, rhythm games, fighting games or tightly timed racing—make inconsistent timing easier to detect. Slower strategy, simulation or turn-based play may be more forgiving. This is a practical consequence of the interactive loop, not a quantified ranking of genres.

Frame rate and resolution also affect the trade-off. A higher target can require more bandwidth and more encoding or decoding work. If quality collapses at a demanding setting, test a lower resolution or frame rate and see whether stability improves. Record the setting with the result; a change that helps one device or service may not help another.

How to read impressive performance claims

NVIDIA’s Blackwell GeForce NOW announcement reports capabilities of up to 5K at 120 FPS, up to 360 FPS at 1080p, click-to-pixel response times as low as 30 milliseconds, and sub-30-millisecond network latency for the majority of gamers in supported regions. These are vendor-reported capability figures. They are not independent measurements, and they should not be treated as typical results for every player, game, device or region.

In the same announcement, NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang called the move to Blackwell “the biggest leap in cloud gaming ever.” That is promotional language from the company’s founder and CEO, not a neutral industry evaluation. A claim about click-to-pixel response also does not equal the complete experience from your controller through the network, game loop, display and eyes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical pre-session checklist

  • Verify the service, plan, region, device and game are currently supported.
  • Set a resolution and frame rate your connection can sustain; use the service’s own guidance as the starting point.
  • Use Ethernet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi when available.
  • Close or schedule competing downloads, uploads and backups.
  • Check the service overlay for latency, packet loss and data-center selection.
  • Use a supported controller and confirm that the game supports your chosen input method.
  • Enable low-latency or game mode on the display while testing.
  • Judge consistency over a real session, not one download-speed result.

When troubleshooting fails, classify the symptom before changing equipment: poor image quality usually points first to capacity or adaptation; control delay points toward latency and processing; irregular stutter points toward jitter, packet loss or congestion; and delay that remains on Ethernet may be outside the home network.
