How Clothing and Fragrance Signaled Status in Ancient Rome

In ancient Rome, clothing made civic identity and public roles visible, while fragrance could signal access to costly ingredients and leisure. Neither worked as a simple code: garments meant different things by age, occasion, and status, and perfume ranged from ordinary products to expensive luxuries.

How did clothing show status in ancient Rome?

Roman dress communicated identity in public, but its signals depended on context. A scholarly analysis describes the toga as associated with citizenship, masculinity, and Roman identity; its fabric and form could alter the meaning. The study of the toga and the moral body emphasizes that it was not merely a costume: wearing it could associate a person with civic belonging.

That association did not mean every toga identified a particular rank. An all-white toga could present a citizen as part of a shared civic group, while ceremonial dress or mourning clothes communicated a different circumstance. Clothing could distinguish citizens from non-citizens and elites from the broader population, but those distinctions were shaped by occasion and convention.

Dress could also be adopted and reinterpreted beyond the city of Rome. The University of Queensland’s Ancient Roman Fashion exhibition discusses a Palmyrene funerary portrait in which toga-style clothing conveys local wealth, status, and achievement. Roman-coded dress therefore did not have one fixed meaning throughout the empire.

What did Roman clothing colors and garments mean?

Color mattered, but there was no universal color chart that assigned one rank to every garment. Purple and gold ceremonial forms could mark exceptional status, while dark clothing could be worn for mourning. The garment, setting, and purpose shaped how a color was understood; a color alone does not establish the wearer’s social position.

The toga praetexta and life stages

The toga praetexta, edged with a purple border, was associated with Roman boys and girls and with certain civic or religious roles. Dickinson College Commentaries’ discussion of the toga praetexta places changes in dress within broader transitions in life. Practices differed by gender and ritual, and the evidence should not be turned into a universal checklist for every period.

Claims that particular clothes reliably identified sex workers or adulteresses require similar caution. As the commentary notes, rhetorical and comic references complicate the evidence: a literary label or joke is not proof of a consistent, officially recognized dress code.

What did perfume mean in ancient Rome?

Perfume could communicate access to luxury, leisure, and imported ingredients, especially when a product was costly or used conspicuously. But scent was not exclusive to the wealthy. The University of Queensland exhibition says perfumes and cosmetics were available across social classes, with products ranging from simple, relatively inexpensive preparations to costly exotic formulas.

The exhibition reports a price of 35–300 denarii for a cinnamon-leaf perfume. That is an ancient price range as reported by the museum, whose page gives no publication year; it is not a modern-value conversion and should not be treated as the price of perfume generally.

Elite writers also made fragrance a subject of moral criticism. Pliny the Elder, in Natural History 13.20, calls perfume “a luxury item of the most superfluous type,” arguing that its scent vanishes soon after application. This is Pliny’s view in the translation presented by the University of Queensland exhibition, not a neutral survey of what all Romans thought.

Moralizing commentary could link heavy or conspicuous perfume use with deception, sexual impropriety, or luxury. Such accusations reveal anxieties in elite writing; they should not be treated as objective descriptions of perfume users or proof that scent belonged only to one class.

What was a Roman perfume bottle called?

An unguentarium was a vessel used for scented oil, perfume, or body lotion. A Roman example is described by the University of Colorado Boulder’s Department of Classics in its page on the unguentarium. The object offers material evidence for storing and handling scented products alongside literary references to perfume; a vessel by itself does not establish the exact formula or how widely a particular scent was used.

How to read clothing and fragrance as status signals

  • Who used it: A toga could signal civic identity, and some garments were tied to age or civic and religious roles. Perfume, by contrast, was used across social classes, though access to costly preparations differed.
  • What it was made from: Ordinary cloth and expensive dyes did not carry the same implications; perfumes likewise ranged from simpler products to formulas with costly or exotic ingredients.
  • Where and when it appeared: Civic display, ceremony, mourning, life transitions, and conspicuous use could change how dress or scent was read.
  • How it was judged: Clothing might express belonging or achievement, while perfume could suggest luxury and also draw moral criticism from elite commentators.

These signals are best understood as parts of a changing social language, not as a fixed code in which one garment or scent reveals a person’s rank on its own.
