How Chromecast with Google TV Updates Work—and How Long 4K and HD Devices Receive Them

Chromecast with Google TV normally downloads and installs updates automatically. To check one yourself, use the television interface—not the Google Home app—by opening Settings (or All settings) > System > About > System update. Google delivers firmware in stages, so two otherwise identical devices may not update on the same day.

Google’s published security policy gives the 4K and HD models different minimum security-update dates. The 4K model’s five-year minimum is September 30, 2025, while the HD model’s is September 22, 2027. Those dates describe a minimum for critical security fixes, not a guaranteed end date for every operating-system, app, or feature update.

How Chromecast with Google TV updates normally work

Google says its streaming devices install over-the-air updates automatically when updates are available. During initial setup, the Chromecast checks for current software and generally downloads it without requiring you to start a manual process. After setup, it continues to check for production firmware in the background.

An update can include an Android security patch, operating-system components, bug fixes, performance changes, or feature work. Google does not publish a fixed monthly or quarterly schedule for Chromecast with Google TV, so the absence of an update on a particular day does not by itself indicate a fault.

What happens while an update installs

The television displays update progress, and the device’s LED pulses while it receives an update. You cannot use the Chromecast to cast during installation. Keep the power connected and do not unplug it merely because the screen appears unchanged for a few minutes.

Automatic does not mean simultaneous

Google uses staged rollouts for production firmware. A release is distributed progressively rather than to every unit at once. Google’s production-firmware listing is updated after a version is available for all devices, so seeing a version on that page does not guarantee that every Chromecast received it on the same date. Staging lets Google watch for serious problems and expand availability over time.

How to check for an update on the Chromecast

Use the on-screen Google TV menus. The wording can differ slightly by software version or region, but Google’s published route is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. From the Google TV home screen, open Settings. On some versions this is labelled All settings.
  2. Select System.
  3. Open About.
  4. Choose System update.
  5. Read the status and follow the prompt if an update is offered.

Chromecast with Google TV updates do not appear in the Google Home app. The television-connected device is where you check its firmware status and start an available manual check.

What you should see

If the Chromecast is current, the screen reports that no update is available. If Google has made a package available to your unit, the device downloads it and then asks to restart or restarts as part of installation. Allow the process to finish before removing power.

Why your Chromecast may not update at the same time as another one

Staged delivery is the main reason owners see different timing. Google may release the same firmware to a subset of devices, regions, or hardware conditions first and broaden it later. Network availability, the device’s check-in timing, and Google’s rollout controls can all affect when a particular unit sees the package.

Do not treat a friend’s new build number as proof that yours is malfunctioning. Wait for the rollout to reach your device, then use System update to check. Google does not promise a universal release hour or a fixed number of days between the first and final units in a rollout.

Current firmware information and what release notes mean

Google’s firmware release-notes page was last updated June 23, 2026. At that snapshot, both Chromecast with Google TV (4K) and Chromecast with Google TV (HD) were listed with build UTTC.250917.004. The notes identified an Android security patch level updated to October 2025, along with other bug fixes and performance improvements.

That build entry is a dated status, not a promise that it remains the latest version indefinitely. Build numbers, patch levels, and listed fixes can change as Google publishes later releases. When diagnosing an update question, compare the version shown on the device with Google’s current release-notes page rather than relying on an old screenshot or a post that names a previous build.

How long Chromecast with Google TV receives security updates

Google’s connected-home security policy says: “Google Nest connected home devices will receive automatic security updates for at least 5 years from the date we start selling them on the US Google Store.” Google defines these security updates as fixes for critical issues known to Google that can be addressed through a remote software update.

The policy’s dates are based on the US Google Store sale date. They should not be silently converted into a worldwide support promise, because the cited policy does not establish equivalent dates for every region or sales channel.

Model Google Store release date used by policy Published five-year minimum security date Status shown in Google’s table

Chromecast with Google TV (HD) and Chromecast Voice Remote September 22, 2022 September 22, 2027 Currently receiving critical security updates

What the 4K date does—and does not—say

September 30, 2025 is the end of the 4K model’s stated five-year minimum under that policy. It is not evidence that every security update stopped on that day. In the cited table, Google marks the 4K device as currently receiving critical security updates even though the minimum date has passed. Google can continue providing fixes beyond a minimum commitment.

What the HD date means

For Chromecast with Google TV (HD), the policy’s five-year minimum runs through September 22, 2027. The same table marks the HD model as currently receiving critical security updates. As with 4K, this is a security-update commitment and status, not a schedule for every other type of software change.

Security updates are not the same as all software updates

The published dates answer a narrow question: how long Google promises at least automatic fixes for critical security issues under its connected-home policy. They do not establish a separate guaranteed end date for:

  • Every Android TV or Google TV operating-system upgrade.
  • New interface features or account features.
  • Application updates delivered through Google Play.
  • Performance tuning, compatibility changes, or ordinary bug fixes.
  • Updates to third-party streaming services.

A Chromecast can therefore remain eligible for critical security work without receiving every new feature offered on newer hardware. Conversely, a feature or bug-fix release does not change the security policy’s minimum date. Keep those categories separate when evaluating whether a device is “still supported.”

What to do when an update appears stuck

Google says a setup update typically takes 10–12 minutes. A longer duration can result from a weak connection, a power interruption, or a temporary rollout or download problem. Follow the least disruptive checks first.

1. Check power and network connections

  • Confirm that the Chromecast’s power cable is firmly connected to the device and its power source.
  • Make sure the television remains on the update-status screen and that the network connection is still available.
  • Do not repeatedly disconnect power while the installation is actively writing software.

If the update has already run substantially longer than the normal 10–12-minute setup window, proceed to Google’s restart step rather than waiting indefinitely.

2. Perform Google’s one-minute power restart

  1. Unplug the Chromecast from power.
  2. Wait one full minute.
  3. Plug it back in.
  4. Allow it to boot and resume or retry the update.

This is a power restart, not a factory reset. It preserves the device’s configuration unless Google’s recovery process separately asks you to set it up again.

3. Factory-reset and set up the device again if the problem persists

Google lists a factory reset as a later troubleshooting step. Use it only after checking connectivity and power and trying the one-minute disconnect, because resetting removes the device’s accounts, preferences, installed-app state, and network settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After the reset, run setup again and let the Chromecast complete its update before judging the result. Google suggests using a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network if one is available during this recovery setup. Once setup finishes, you can return to the system-update screen to verify the installed version.

Signs that the device is still processing an update

  • The LED continues pulsing and the television shows an update-status message.
  • The device restarts once or more as part of installation.
  • The download resumes after the network or power connection is restored.

A frozen picture with no status change, no LED activity, or repeated boot cycles after the restart attempt is a reason to use the factory-reset path or Google’s current support guidance for the specific failure.

How to interpret a missing update

Several explanations are consistent with normal operation:

  • The rollout has not reached your unit. Staged firmware can arrive later than it does on another Chromecast.
  • Your device is already on the applicable build. Check the version in Settings > System > About and compare it with current Google release notes.
  • The connection is preventing the download. A weak or interrupted network can delay a check or installation.
  • You are looking in the wrong app. The Google Home app is not where Chromecast with Google TV firmware status is displayed.
  • The question concerns a feature rather than security. Google’s critical-security commitment does not promise every new feature or operating-system release.

Because Google does not publish a fixed cadence, there is no reliable rule such as “every device must update each month.” Use the model, installed build, rollout status, and the security-policy date together rather than drawing a conclusion from one missing feature.

The 4K date passing does not automatically make the device unsafe or unusable, and the HD date does not guarantee a particular feature roadmap. For either model, the actionable checks are the installed build, the television’s update status, the network and power condition, and Google’s latest policy and release-note entries.

Questions owners commonly ask

How do I update my Chromecast with Google TV?

Open Settings or All settings > System > About > System update on the television. The device normally downloads updates automatically, but this menu lets you check its status. Google Home does not show these updates.

How long will Chromecast with Google TV get updates?

Google’s policy promises automatic critical-security updates for at least five years from the model’s US Google Store sale date. The published minimum dates are September 30, 2025 for 4K and September 22, 2027 for HD. The policy does not provide a matching end date for all software or features.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why has my Chromecast with Google TV not updated yet?

The most likely normal explanation is staged rollout timing. Also check the network, power, installed build, and the on-device update menu. If a setup update exceeds the typical 10–12 minutes, use the one-minute unplug-and-reconnect procedure, then consider a factory reset only if the problem remains.

Can I keep casting while the update installs?

No. Google states that the device cannot be used to cast while an update is installing. Wait until the television reports completion and the Chromecast has restarted.

Does September 30, 2025 mean the 4K model receives no more updates?

No. It is the published end of the five-year minimum security period, not proof that all updates stopped. Google’s cited table marks the 4K model as currently receiving critical security updates, and the table does not set an all-software cutoff.
