Chrome tab sync lets you reopen pages from one device on another by saving selected Chrome profile data to the Google Account signed in to Chrome. To use it, sign in with the same account on each device and allow History and tabs to sync. Open tabs and browsing history are included in Google’s documented sync categories, but you can choose which categories Chrome saves. The account copy is separate from the tabs physically open on each device, and privacy settings determine how that saved history can be used.
What Chrome tab sync actually does
Chrome sync is an account-based service inside the browser. When Chrome is signed in to a Google Account, selected profile information is saved to that account and made available to Chrome installations using the same account. This is why a tab opened on a laptop can appear in the browser’s recent-device list on a phone or another computer.

If you do not sign in to Chrome, browser data stays on that device rather than being made available through the account. Signing in alone does not mean every possible category is enabled: Chrome’s sync controls let you choose what to save.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsGoogle’s documentation identifies open tabs and history as sync data. It also lists bookmarks, saved passwords, payment information, settings and preferences among categories that may be saved, depending on the settings for the profile. The practical consequence is that enabling tab access can involve more than a page title: it is part of a broader profile-sync decision.

Requirements before tabs can appear on another device
- Chrome must be signed in to the same Google Account on the participating devices.
- History and tabs must be enabled in that account’s Chrome sync settings.
- The devices need to be online long enough for Chrome to upload and download the current profile state.
- A work or school administrator may restrict sync options or enforce different retention and sign-in policies.
Menu names can vary with Chrome version, operating system, region and administrator configuration. If a setting is unavailable on a managed profile, that is a policy limitation rather than proof that personal-device instructions are wrong.
How to turn on and configure tab sync
Start with the account sign-in
- Open Chrome on the device that contains the tabs you want to access elsewhere.
- Sign in to Chrome with the Google Account you intend to use on the other devices.
- Open Chrome’s sync settings and review the data categories. Select the option that enables History and tabs, or choose a customized sync configuration that includes it.
- Repeat the sign-in and sync review on each additional device, using the identical Google Account.
Chrome can save several profile categories at once. If you only want cross-device tabs and do not want other categories stored, use the customization controls instead of accepting a broad default. The available labels differ across desktop, Android, ChromeOS and managed editions, so follow the choices shown in your installation.
Choose categories deliberately
Chrome’s controls separate the decision to sync from the decision about which information is saved. A profile might sync bookmarks while leaving passwords disabled, or sync history and tabs while excluding payment information. Review the complete list rather than assuming that “tabs” is an isolated switch.

Google’s desktop route is History → Tabs from other devices. Select a listed device and choose the page you want to reopen. The wording and placement can change between Chrome releases, but the destination is the history view that groups tabs by other signed-in devices.

Chrome on Android
Google’s Android route is More → Recent tabs. The list can include tabs from the current phone and from other devices using the same account. Android menu labels can differ by app version.
If a tab is missing
- Check the account avatar in Chrome on both devices and confirm that the account addresses match.
- Open sync settings and confirm that History and tabs are enabled on the device that opened the page.
- Check that both devices have an active internet connection and leave Chrome open briefly so synchronization can complete.
- Look for a paused-sync notice. Google says sync may pause after signing out of a Google service and may require identity verification before it resumes.
- On a managed work or school profile, ask the administrator whether policy blocks history or tab synchronization.
Chrome’s official troubleshooting guidance is available at Google’s Chrome sync help page. A missing entry does not by itself show that a tab was exposed, deleted or permanently lost; account, setting and connection checks come first.
What information Chrome sync can save
Google describes Chrome sync as handling several categories of profile and service information. The exact set saved for you depends on the controls enabled in Chrome.

| Category | What Google’s documentation says | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Open tabs | Open tabs are a Chrome Sync category and can be shown under tabs from other devices or recent tabs. | Cross-device tab access requires the same signed-in account and enabled History and tabs sync. |
| Browsing history | History is listed as information that can be synchronized to the Google Account. | History is also the mechanism used to display many cross-device tab entries. |
| Bookmarks | Bookmarks are among the profile categories Google lists. | They can be controlled separately from other sync categories. |
| Saved passwords | Saved passwords are listed as a category that may be saved. | Enabling tab sync does not require you to enable password sync. |
| Payment information | Payment information is included in Google’s general list of possible synchronized data. | Review this category explicitly if you want a narrower sync profile. |
| Settings and preferences | Other browser settings and preferences may be saved. | The scope depends on Chrome’s current sync controls and account configuration. |
Google’s broader processing description also refers to user, device, browser, usage, site and extension information used to provide Chrome services. That description is Google’s service documentation, not an independent privacy audit, and it should not be read as a promise that every listed item is enabled for every account.

Does Chrome send the full contents of every open tab?
Google’s general Chrome Sync help confirms that open tabs and history are categories. It does not establish one universal payload for every Chrome version, platform or account configuration. A separate managed ChromeOS feature called Desk sync provides a more detailed example: its documentation describes URLs, tab order, pinned status, tab groups, assignment to windows and window positions. Those details demonstrate that a managed tab-sync feature can preserve arrangement information, but they should not be generalized to every ordinary Chrome Sync setup.
Desk sync documentation also describes persistent and session cookies under particular configurations. In that feature, URLs are retained for 30 days and cookies for seven days, according to Google Chrome Enterprise and Education Help (2026). These are Desk sync statements, not general retention periods for consumer Chrome tab sync.
Encryption and the optional passphrase
Google says information sent to its services is encrypted in transit. Chrome also offers an optional passphrase for certain synced data. Google’s wording is specific: “You can choose to encrypt certain data with your own passphrase, so Google cannot read this data.”

The passphrase applies to the data covered by that option, and you must remember the passphrase to use the protected sync data on another installation. Losing it can prevent access to the encrypted sync set; Chrome cannot simply read it for you.

Consider a passphrase when the convenience of account sync is useful but you want Google unable to read the categories covered by your own encryption key. Check the exact categories and recovery behavior shown by your Chrome version before relying on it for a particular type of information.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Chrome sync is not the same as Google personalization
Sync determines which Chrome data is saved to the Google Account and made available to Chrome on other devices. Personalization is a separate Google Account control. Google says Chrome history saved to the account may be used to personalize other Google products, such as Search, when that history is also included in Web & App Activity.
Therefore, opening the tab-sync menu does not automatically mean that every Google service will personalize itself from every tab. The relevant condition is that Chrome history is saved to the account and included in Web & App Activity. Review Web & App Activity separately if you do not want account-held Chrome history used for that purpose.
Review or remove data already saved to the account
Chrome provides controls to customize what is saved going forward. Google also directs users to chrome.google.com/sync to review or delete sync data already stored in the account. Use that page when you want to inspect the account copy rather than only changing the setting on one device.
Best Value
- Open Chrome’s sync settings and turn off History and tabs or switch to a customized selection if you no longer want those categories saved.
- Check every device using the account, especially devices that may still be signed in.
- Open chrome.google.com/sync and review the available account-held sync data.
- Delete the stored sync data there when you want to remove the account copy, following the confirmation prompts shown by Google.
- Separately review Web & App Activity if your concern is Google-product personalization rather than Chrome’s cross-device access.
Turning off a category and deleting an existing account copy are related but distinct actions. Check both when your goal is to stop future uploads and remove data already saved.
Privacy decisions before enabling tab sync
- Convenience: Sync is useful when you regularly move between a phone, personal computer and other signed-in devices.
- Scope: Decide whether you want only history and tabs or additional categories such as bookmarks, passwords, payment information and settings.
- Account exposure: Any device where the same Google Account is active may become a place where synced profile information is available.
- Personalization: Check Web & App Activity separately if you do not want saved Chrome history used to personalize other Google services.
- Encryption: In-transit encryption is provided; an optional passphrase protects certain data, not automatically every category.
- Administration: Work and school profiles can be governed by policies that change available controls and behavior.
A practical setup checklist
- Sign in to Chrome with the same Google Account on the source and destination devices.
- Enable History and tabs, or choose a custom sync set that includes them.
- Disable categories you do not want saved to the account.
- On desktop, test the route History → Tabs from other devices; on Android, test More → Recent tabs.
- If the tab is absent, verify account identity, connection, sync status and any administrator policy before changing other settings.
- Decide whether to use a passphrase for the categories Chrome allows it to protect.
- Review stored data at chrome.google.com/sync and review Web & App Activity independently.
Bottom line for different users
Personal devices
Enable History and tabs when resuming work across your own signed-in devices is worth storing that information in the account. Use customized sync and the passphrase option to narrow the data exposure where those controls meet your needs.
Shared or borrowed devices
Be cautious about signing Chrome into a device that other people can use. The account may make synced history and tabs available there until you sign out and remove the profile.
Work and school profiles
Assume that administrator policies can override personal preferences. Check the organization’s Chrome policy or support channel before treating a missing control or unusual retention behavior as a browser fault.
