How China Is Gaining Ground in African Tech: Lexi Novitske’s View

Chinese technology’s growing presence in Africa is moving beyond phones and telecoms equipment into fintech and AI, according to TechCentral’s summary of an interview with Lexi Novitske, general partner at Norrsken22. The account points to a shift in where African startups find technology and capital—but it does not establish that China leads the market overall.

What “China winning African tech” means in this interview

TechCentral published its interview with Novitske on 1 October 2026. The episode summary describes a progression in Chinese firms’ engagement with African technology: phones and telecoms equipment, then fintech, and now AI models. It presents this as a discussion of growing influence, not a measured comparison of Chinese and US market share.

The distinction matters. A company’s use of a Chinese model, or the presence of Chinese products in a particular technology layer, does not by itself show that China dominates Africa’s wider tech sector. The episode page provides no market-share, adoption-rate or capital-flow statistics to quantify the broader claim.

Why African startups are looking at Chinese AI models

TechCentral says African startups are increasingly building on Chinese AI models such as Alibaba’s Qwen because they are cheaper and more available. That is the publisher’s summary of Novitske’s argument. The page supplies no model-price comparison, availability measure or adoption figures, so the claimed advantages should be understood as a reported explanation rather than a quantified industry finding.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The point in the interview’s framing is practical: the choice of AI tools may be shaped by what startups can access and afford, not only by the country of origin of a model. The episode summary does not identify particular African companies, applications or cost savings.

How the interview frames US involvement

Novitske’s view, as summarized by TechCentral, is that US investors may regret pulling back from Africa while Silicon Valley’s AI boom draws venture capital toward other opportunities. This is an investor’s assessment, not evidence in the episode page of a measured decline in US investment or a specific amount of capital redirected.

The contrast is therefore best read as a question of attention and opportunity: if US investors become less engaged, other technology providers and investors may have more room to build relationships with African companies. The summary does not establish that Chinese capital has replaced US investment.

What Novitske identifies as challenges in Nigeria

Having moved to Nigeria in 2012, Novitske has invested from Lagos since then, according to the episode page. In discussing the country’s business environment, she reportedly treats unpredictable regulation and a shortage of top talent as more significant obstacles than power cuts. That is her assessment as reported by TechCentral, not a ranking supported there by comparative data.

The summary also points to OPay and PalmPay’s years of losses as part of their competitive push, and to the regulatory unease this has produced. It does not provide financial statements, loss totals or detail about specific regulatory actions, so it cannot establish the scale or consequences of those losses independently.

Where she sees investment opportunities

In TechCentral’s account, Novitske sees Egypt and South Africa as the strongest current opportunities for investment, with Nigeria likely to follow. This is her reported view of the landscape, not a definitive ranking or a claim that these are the only markets with potential. The episode summary does not give comparative deal, return or growth data for the three countries.

Norrsken22’s fund and the route to returns

TechCentral reports that Norrsken22 is a pan-African growth fund backed by Nordic technology founders. It closed its debut vehicle at US$205 million in 2023. At the time of the episode’s publication on 1 October 2026, the fund was about halfway through deploying that capital and had no exits, according to the page.

The conversation also addresses how investors might eventually realize returns. The summary mentions Optasia’s oversubscribed listing on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) and says some African fintech companies are looking toward overseas markets including New York, London and Hong Kong. One listing is not evidence that this is a general path for African companies; the episode page does not report a broader tally of listings or exits.

  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.

That context makes the interview’s discussion of concentrated returns relevant: it raises the possibility that one or two highly successful investments could return an entire fund. The summary presents this as a venture-investing consideration, not a forecast about Norrsken22’s portfolio or a claim that such an outcome has occurred.

What the episode can—and cannot—establish

The episode page is useful for understanding the topics Novitske discussed and how TechCentral framed her views. It identifies the participants, publication date and fund figure, but offers a topic summary rather than a full transcript. It therefore does not provide verbatim quotations, and its account should not be treated as independent verification of AI adoption, investment flows, regulatory conditions or fund performance.

  • Supported as the episode’s framing: Chinese technology activity is discussed across devices and telecoms, fintech and AI; Qwen is named as an example; and Novitske’s assessments of Nigeria and investment opportunities are summarized.
  • Not quantified on the page: comparative AI prices or availability, model adoption, market share, capital flows, OPay and PalmPay loss amounts, or comparative country-level investment returns.
  • Not available as direct evidence: a full interview transcript or verbatim statements from Novitske.
