How Chemistry Departments Can Reduce Environmental Impact—and Potentially Save Money

The Royal Society of Chemistry and Heads of Chemistry UK handbook presents practical options for chemistry departments in the UK and Ireland to use resources more thoughtfully. Its focus is department-level action: improving laboratory practices, sharing resources, managing waste and incorporating sustainability into teaching. The sources describe potential cost benefits but report no measured savings or emissions reductions, so departments should assess each option against local needs, budgets, safety requirements and decision-making authority.

What the handbook is—and who it is for

The Royal Society of Chemistry’s account of the HCUK handbook describes it as a collection of adaptable options informed by interviews with heads of chemistry departments across the UK and Ireland. Rather than prescribing one programme for every institution, it treats the department as a useful middle ground: close enough to influence everyday laboratory practice, purchasing and teaching, while often needing university-wide support for building changes.

That distinction matters. Departments operate with different equipment, building conditions, budgets and safety requirements. The handbook’s examples are a menu for local evaluation, not proof that every measure is suitable or effective in every laboratory.

Where departments can look for practical changes

Improve fume hood practices

Fume hood use is one of the action areas identified in the handbook coverage. Departments can consider whether local practices and guidance support appropriate use and avoid unnecessary energy consumption. Any changes must preserve required containment and follow institutional safety procedures; the sources do not specify a particular setting, device or implementation method.

Review energy and water use

The RSC identifies reducing water and energy consumption as areas for departmental attention. Chemistry World also reports examples including more efficient laboratory equipment and changes to building opening hours. These are possibilities to assess against actual use, infrastructure and operating needs, not quantified recommendations or guaranteed sources of savings.

Share chemicals and equipment

Making chemicals or equipment visible and available across research groups or departments can help avoid unnecessary duplicate purchases and reduce waste, where sharing is practical and compatible with storage, handling and safety requirements. The sources present sharing as an opportunity, not as a measured reduction in spending.

Manage waste and materials

Reported examples include washing and reusing lab coats, recycling gloves, recovering liquid helium and recycling solvents. Each option depends on applicable safety, contamination-control and waste-management rules, as well as the facilities available locally. The sources do not provide comparative impact figures or detailed procedures for these measures.

Bring sustainability into teaching

The handbook also points to embedding sustainability principles in degree programmes and practical teaching. That can connect day-to-day laboratory choices with the way students are trained, while leaving departments to decide what is relevant to their curriculum and teaching facilities.

Which decisions sit with departments—and which need university support?

Some actions can be advanced through departmental leadership and collective practice. Others depend on estates teams or central university decisions. Chemistry World’s report on the handbook quotes Martin Farley, associate director of environmental sustainability at UKRI, saying: “A lot of these actions are within the remit of a head of department, but they require the collective to achieve.” He also notes that measures such as installing solar panels or changing light fixtures may be managed centrally.

For an idea that depends on building systems, working hours or major equipment, department leaders may need to involve the university teams with authority over facilities, budgets or procurement. The handbook’s department-level focus does not mean departments control every relevant decision.

How to assess an option before acting

The sources do not rank interventions or provide comparative results. A department can use the following questions to decide which options merit local investigation:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Environmental aim: What resource or waste stream is the change intended to address?
  • Cost implications: What purchase, operating or coordination costs might be involved, and what evidence would be needed to judge any savings?
  • Safety: Can the change meet the department’s safety, containment and waste-handling requirements?
  • Local feasibility: Does the building, equipment and pattern of laboratory use support the option?
  • Infrastructure condition: Would ageing systems or other constraints limit implementation?
  • Authority: Can the department decide and act, or is approval or investment from estates or central university leadership required?

These questions help distinguish a promising idea from an intervention that is feasible in a particular department. They are not a source-backed scoring system or a claim that one action should take priority everywhere.

What the sources establish about savings

The cited coverage gives a qualitative rationale for possible cost co-benefits, not measured outcomes. Chemistry World quotes Jason Love, identified in its report as HCUK chair-elect and head of chemistry at the University of Edinburgh, saying that using less water and energy offers “obvious cost savings,” and that better chemical management and sharing can reduce both waste and spending.

Neither the RSC account nor the Chemistry World report provides a numerical estimate of savings, emissions reductions, payback periods or the handbook’s impact. Those outcomes should not be assumed for any specific intervention without evidence from the relevant department or a suitable assessment. Love’s comments about the handbook’s context, as quoted by the RSC, also underline the need to be realistic about available resources and what a department can change.

Why the handbook emphasizes practical, local leadership

The RSC says heads of chemistry wanted examples grounded in the realities of running departments, including tight budgets, ageing infrastructure and competing priorities. Dr Deirdre Black, RSC Head of Science, describes the handbook as bringing that experience together and showing how departmental leadership can support practical change.

Black also points to chemistry’s role in sustainability through both research and laboratory operations, as well as the training of future scientists. Taken together, the handbook’s approach is to connect operational choices with teaching while recognizing that implementation depends on local circumstances and, in some cases, institutional authority.
