The MasSpec Pen is a handheld sampling probe. It collects molecules from the surface of tissue, passes them to a mass spectrometer, and returns a chemical profile that may help distinguish cancerous tissue from normal tissue during an operation. As described in a February 2021 Chemistry World feature, it is a research-stage method. The reported trial work and figures come from that 2021 report, and the device should be understood as an experimental approach rather than an established part of surgical practice.
What the MasSpec Pen actually is
The MasSpec Pen is best understood as a sampling interface attached to a mass spectrometer. It is not a camera or visual scanner. A surgeon using it does not see a colour map or an image of the tumour edge. The output is a chemical signal, a spectrum of molecules, which must be interpreted against reference data to say whether the sampled tissue looks cancerous or normal.

How the described workflow runs
The 2021 feature describes a probe with a 3D-printed tip made of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and three ports. Each port has a specific job:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Vacuum port: draws the sample liquid up through the tubing toward the mass spectrometer.
- Compressed gas port: provides the gas that operates the system.
- Water port: delivers a small amount of water to the tissue surface.
The sequence, as the feature describes it, is:
- The probe tip is placed against the tissue surface.
- The water port releases a small droplet, and the water absorbs biomolecules from the tissue.
- After about three seconds of contact, vacuum draws the liquid through flexible plastic tubing.
- The sample reaches the mass spectrometer, which produces a spectrum. The feature says the spectrum contains signals associated with molecules such as metabolites, lipids, proteins and fatty acids.
- The feature gives around ten seconds as the time for the complete process.
Two practical points follow from this design. The method samples tissue chemistry at the point of contact rather than scanning an area, so the result depends on where the probe touches. And because the chemical readout needs a mass spectrometer and associated equipment, the probe in its reported form is tied to a specialised laboratory-style setup in the operating room.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The premise: cancerous and normal tissue can have different molecular profiles
The method rests on the idea that cancer and normal tissue can have distinguishable molecular profiles. The feature argues that visual appearance alone can be insufficient during surgery, and that a molecular signal could add information the surgeon does not otherwise have. Whether that added information changes surgical decisions, and for which tissues, is a separate question that the 2021 report does not settle.
The figures reported in 2021
The Chemistry World feature reports the following figures. Each is a claim made in that 2021 report and has not been presented here as independently revalidated.

| Reported figure | What the 2021 report says | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Human surgeries | More than 100 human surgeries | Trialled at a Houston hospital by seven surgeons; reported in Chemistry World, 2021. |
| Surgeons involved | Seven surgeons | Reported in Chemistry World, 2021. The feature does not present these as a multi-centre study. |
| Analyses | 715 in vivo and ex vivo analyses across thyroid, parathyroid, lymph-node, breast, pancreatic and bile-duct tissues | Reported in Chemistry World, 2021. In vivo means in the living patient; ex vivo means on tissue removed from the body. |
| Accuracy | Over 90% accuracy for distinguishing normal and cancerous pancreas, ovarian, lung, thyroid and breast tissues | Reported in Chemistry World, 2021. This is a reported accuracy figure, not a guarantee for any individual patient or a figure for routine use. |
The feature also says that clinical tests had finished in 2020 and that the team planned further work. It refers to a 2020 medRxiv preprint by J. Zhang and colleagues (DOI 10.1101/2020.12.14.20248101) as the underlying clinical work. A medRxiv entry is a preprint that has not necessarily been peer reviewed, so readers who need the underlying data should consult that paper directly and check whether it was later published in a journal.

Livia Schiavinato Eberlin, professor at the University of Texas at Austin, described the aim of the project in these words: “I wanted surgeons to take advantage of the amazing analytical technique that is mass spectrometry through a user-friendly interface or device that did not require extensive expertise for use,” as quoted in the Chemistry World feature. The quote explains the motivation: the goal was to make mass spectrometry usable at the bedside by people who are not analytical chemists. It does not by itself show that the interface is simple enough for routine hospital use.

What the evidence does and does not establish
The 2021 report establishes the device design, the sampling sequence, the reported trial scale and the reported accuracy figures for the listed tissues. It does not establish:
- Current regulatory clearance or approval for clinical use in any country.
- Commercial availability, pricing or purchase pathways for hospitals.
- Routine adoption in operating rooms or standard-of-care status.
- Independent revalidation of the accuracy figures, or performance across different hospitals, surgical teams or patient populations.
- How the method compares with pathology or other established intraoperative methods on patient outcomes.
Where the method fits alongside conventional assessment
The feature frames the MasSpec Pen as an addition to surgeons’ judgement, not a replacement for it. Its stated contribution is a molecular readout where visual inspection may be insufficient. That is a claim about added information, not about superiority. Any decision about whether such a readout should influence treatment would have to rest on clinical validation and on established pathology, which this report does not provide.

Current status
This article is based on the February 2021 Chemistry World report. It does not establish what has happened since then. The 2021 report does not establish current regulatory clearance, routine clinical use or commercial availability, and nothing in this article changes that. To check the present position, look for the device’s regulatory status with the US Food and Drug Administration or the equivalent regulator in your country, and for peer-reviewed publications from the research group. Until those sources confirm clinical availability, the MasSpec Pen should be treated as a research-stage technology.
