How Chemical Treatment Changes Natural-Fiber Composite Strength and Moisture Absorption

Chemical treatment can make a natural-fiber composite stronger, less vulnerable to moisture, both, or neither. The outcome depends on the fiber, polymer matrix, chemical, concentration, exposure time, washing and drying procedure, and the property being measured. Alkali, silane and acetylation treatments modify the fiber surface so the matrix can bond more effectively or so fewer water-attracting constituents remain exposed. However, a treatment that improves tensile strength can reduce impact resistance, and a treatment that lowers water uptake can still fail to improve flexural performance.

The reliable way to judge a treatment is to compare treated and untreated specimens made from the same fiber and matrix, then report tensile, flexural and impact results separately alongside water absorption, swelling and conditioning details. No single chemical treatment is a universal winner.

Why natural-fiber composites have a moisture and bonding problem

Plant fibers attract water

Natural fibers contain cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin, waxes, pectin and other constituents. Their proportions vary with plant species, growing conditions, harvesting and extraction. The hydroxyl-rich structure of many of these constituents is hydrophilic, so it can attract and hold water. Common polymer matrices, by contrast, are often comparatively hydrophobic. That mismatch creates a weak boundary between fiber and matrix and gives water pathways into the composite.

When moisture enters, the fiber can swell while the surrounding polymer changes much less. Repeated wetting and drying can therefore cause dimensional change, internal stress and debonding. Water at the interface can reduce stress transfer, so a composite may lose strength or stiffness even when the dry, newly molded specimen initially appears acceptable.

The interface controls load transfer

In a well-bonded composite, an applied load is transferred from the polymer into the fibers. A rough, contaminated or poorly wetted fiber surface interrupts that transfer. Voids, pull-out and interfacial cracks then absorb less load than an intact fiber-matrix connection. Surface treatment aims to change the chemistry and texture of the fiber without damaging its load-bearing structure.

What chemical treatment is intended to do

Most treatments pursue one or both of two goals: improve adhesion to the matrix, and reduce the fiber’s tendency to take up water. Removing weak surface constituents can expose cellulose and create a rougher surface for mechanical interlocking. A coupling agent can form a chemical bridge between otherwise incompatible phases. Replacing or blocking water-attracting groups can reduce moisture affinity. These mechanisms overlap, but they are not interchangeable, and a change in one does not guarantee a change in every measured property.

Treatment class How it changes the fiber surface Potential composite benefit Main limitation
Alkali treatment with sodium hydroxide Can remove hemicellulose, lignin, wax, pectin and other surface impurities; often leaves a cleaner, rougher surface. May improve wetting, interfacial bonding and stress transfer; can reduce some moisture-related effects when hydrophilic constituents are removed. Excessive exposure can attack the fiber structure and reduce mechanical properties. Results vary with concentration, time, fiber and matrix.
Silane coupling treatment Introduces a coupling layer intended to improve chemical compatibility between fiber and polymer. Can strengthen the interface and help maintain properties when the matrix and silane chemistry are compatible. Performance depends on silane type, solution conditions, fiber chemistry, matrix and curing. It should not be assumed to outperform other treatments without a matched comparison.
Acetylation Modifies accessible hydroxyl groups on the fiber surface, replacing part of their water-attracting character. Can reduce moisture affinity and related swelling, while potentially changing interfacial behavior. The balance between lower water uptake and mechanical adhesion depends on reaction extent and the particular composite system.

How alkali treatment affects strength and moisture behavior

Why sodium hydroxide can help

Alkali treatment is commonly discussed because sodium hydroxide can remove portions of hemicellulose, lignin, wax, pectin and other deposits from the fiber surface. The resulting surface may be cleaner and more irregular. A matrix can then wet the fiber more completely, and the roughness can provide additional mechanical interlocking. If fewer hydrophilic constituents remain at the exposed surface, water uptake may also decline.

Those mechanisms can improve stress transfer and produce higher tensile or flexural values in a particular material system. They do not mean that every alkali-treated fiber will be stronger or drier. Fiber diameter, initial defects, treatment concentration, treatment time, temperature, rinsing, drying, matrix viscosity and molding pressure all influence the result.

Why too much alkali is harmful

The same chemical action that cleans a surface can become destructive. Severe treatment can remove or damage structural material, create defects, fibrillate the fiber excessively or weaken the cellulose framework. A weaker fiber cannot carry the extra load that a better interface might otherwise transfer. The composite can therefore show a lower strength after an apparently more aggressive treatment.

A 2022 review reports beneficial results for 5 wt% sodium hydroxide in some systems, while studies summarized in the literature report deterioration at higher concentrations for particular fibers. The 5 wt% value is a result associated with selected material and processing combinations, not a universal recipe. It should be treated as a variable to investigate, not a setting to copy blindly.

How silane and acetylation change the balance

Silane coupling agents

Silane treatments are designed to improve compatibility at the fiber-matrix boundary. The coupling layer can provide chemical groups that interact with the fiber and other groups that interact with the polymer. When the chemistry matches the matrix and the treatment is properly formed, the interface may resist debonding and transfer load more efficiently.

A silane result is meaningful only with its treatment details. The silane identity, solution composition, hydrolysis conditions, exposure duration, drying and curing can all change the coating. A treatment that works with one polymer cannot automatically be ranked first for another. Comparisons should use the same fiber, matrix, fiber fraction, specimen conditioning and test method.

Acetylation and related surface modifications

Acetylation changes accessible hydroxyl groups on the fiber. Because those groups contribute to water affinity, the modification can lower moisture uptake or swelling in some systems. It also changes surface polarity, which may alter wetting and adhesion to the matrix. Lower water absorption is therefore not proof of higher strength; the modified surface still has to bond effectively during processing.

Other surface modifications follow the same principle: they alter the chemical groups available at the interface. Their success must be judged against both moisture data and mechanical data rather than by treatment class alone.

Strength is not one measurement

Tensile strength and modulus

Tensile testing emphasizes the ability of fibers and their interfaces to carry an aligned load. Better adhesion can raise tensile strength by reducing fiber pull-out and improving stress transfer. A damaged fiber, void-rich laminate or poorly wetted bundle can erase that gain. Tensile modulus may change differently from tensile strength because stiffness depends strongly on fiber content, orientation and the elastic response of each phase.

Flexural strength

Flexural loading combines tension, compression and interlaminar shear through the specimen thickness. Surface treatment can improve flexural performance when it reduces interfacial separation, but flexural results are not interchangeable with tensile results. A treatment may produce a favorable tensile value while leaving compression-side defects or voids that limit flexural strength.

Impact strength

Impact tests measure rapid energy absorption and damage propagation. A very strong interface can sometimes transfer a crack directly through the composite instead of allowing controlled fiber pull-out, while a weak interface can fail prematurely. Consequently, a treatment that improves tensile or flexural properties may not improve impact resistance. Impact energy must be reported as its own outcome.

How treatment changes water absorption and swelling

Water absorption

Water absorption is usually reported as the change in specimen mass after exposure to a defined environment. Surface cleaning, lower polarity or a better-sealed interface can reduce the amount of water entering the composite. But the measured value also depends on specimen thickness, exposed edges, fiber volume, void content, immersion or humidity conditions, exposure time and whether the specimen is dried between cycles.

Swelling and dimensional stability

Water uptake and dimensional change are related but distinct. A specimen can absorb water without showing the same proportional change in length or thickness as another specimen. Report swelling or dimensional change separately, especially when the intended use has tight tolerances. Repeated wet-dry cycling can reveal damage that a single absorption measurement misses.

Moisture can weaken the interface after the test

Water may plasticize parts of the matrix, swell the fiber and open microcracks at the boundary. A treatment that lowers initial absorption may therefore help retain strength after conditioning, but retention must be measured directly. Dry strength before exposure does not establish wet strength after exposure.

Why published results disagree

Different fibers are different materials

Fiber species, harvest maturity, extraction method, diameter distribution, defects and initial moisture content affect both treatment response and baseline strength. Two papers using the same chemical name may be testing fundamentally different fibers.

Matrix chemistry changes the answer

Thermoplastics, thermosets and bio-based polymers present different functional groups, viscosities and curing conditions. A surface that bonds well to one matrix may wet poorly or react differently with another. Fiber loading and orientation can also dominate the measured property.

Treatment severity is nonlinear

Increasing concentration or duration does not produce a steady improvement. A mild treatment may leave contaminants; an intermediate treatment may optimize roughness and compatibility; a severe treatment may remove structural material. The useful range must be established for the selected fiber and matrix.

Conditioning and test methods matter

Dry specimens, humidity-conditioned specimens and immersed specimens are not equivalent. Tensile, flexural and impact standards apply different loading rates and specimen geometries. Even the way fibers are washed, neutralized and dried can affect residual chemicals, porosity and final moisture content. A numerical result without these details is difficult to transfer to another project.

How to compare treatments fairly

Use a controlled comparison instead of asking which chemical is best in the abstract. The following workflow keeps the variables visible:

  1. Define the baseline. Record the untreated fiber source, preparation, moisture condition, matrix grade, fiber fraction, orientation and molding or curing schedule.
  2. Choose the outcomes before treatment. At minimum, plan tensile, flexural and impact tests separately, plus water absorption and swelling or another dimensional measure.
  3. Vary one treatment factor at a time where practical. If concentration, duration, temperature and silane formulation all change together, an apparent improvement cannot be assigned to one cause.
  4. Keep specimen production matched. Use the same fiber length, distribution, matrix content, consolidation pressure, specimen dimensions and post-cure history for every comparison group.
  5. Document the treatment completely. Record chemical identity, concentration, liquid-to-fiber ratio when used, exposure time and temperature, washing or neutralization, drying conditions and any curing step. Sodium hydroxide and silane coupling agents are laboratory reagents; handling should follow the applicable chemical-safety procedures.
  6. Condition specimens before testing. State whether specimens were dry, humidity-conditioned, immersed, or tested after wet-dry cycling, and report the exposure duration and temperature.
  7. Inspect the failure mode. Fiber pull-out, interfacial debonding, matrix cracking and fiber fracture help explain why a numerical value changed. A higher strength with a different failure mode may imply a different design trade-off.
  8. Report variability. Include the number of specimens and spread of results. A small average increase may not be meaningful if specimen-to-specimen scatter is large.

How to interpret the often-cited 5 wt% NaOH result

The 5 wt% figure is useful as a reminder that alkali concentration can have an optimum range, not as a universal specification. In the review literature, favorable 5 wt% results come from selected fiber, matrix and processing combinations. Other summarized studies report deterioration at higher concentration. Those findings support a concentration study around a justified starting point, with untreated controls and matched conditioning, rather than an assumption that more alkali produces more cleaning and more strength.

If a project adopts 5 wt% as one experimental condition, the article or report should identify the exact fiber and matrix, treatment duration, temperature, washing and drying procedure, and test environment. Without those details, the number cannot be transferred reliably to another composite.

Choosing a treatment by the property you need

When moisture resistance is the priority

Measure water absorption and swelling directly, then test mechanical retention after conditioning. Acetylation or another polarity-changing treatment may be relevant, while alkali or silane may help if they improve the interface and reduce pathways for water. Do not select a treatment from dry tensile data alone.

When tensile or flexural load is the priority

Focus on wetting, interfacial bonding, fiber damage and void control. Alkali or silane may improve stress transfer in a compatible system. Verify both tensile and flexural performance because they load the composite differently.

When impact durability is the priority

Include impact testing from the start. Avoid assuming that the treatment producing the highest static strength will absorb the most impact energy. Examine fracture surfaces and test after the moisture exposure expected in service.

When dimensional stability is critical

Measure thickness and in-plane swelling through the full exposure period, not just final mass gain. A treatment can reduce water uptake yet leave enough fiber swelling to exceed a dimensional tolerance.

Common interpretation mistakes

  • Calling a treatment universally best. The available reviews summarize heterogeneous fibers, matrices and protocols rather than a head-to-head ranking under identical conditions.
  • Equating lower water absorption with higher strength. Moisture behavior and mechanical behavior are connected but separate outcomes.
  • Reporting only one strength test. Tensile, flexural and impact properties respond to different failure mechanisms.
  • Copying a concentration without its context. The 5 wt% NaOH result is system-specific, and higher concentrations can damage some fibers.
  • Ignoring the untreated control. Without a matched control, a change cannot be attributed confidently to the chemical treatment.
  • Leaving out conditioning details. Dry, humid and immersed specimens answer different engineering questions.
  • Overlooking treatment damage. A cleaner surface cannot compensate for a fiber weakened by excessive chemical exposure.

A practical decision rule

Start with the service failure you need to prevent: fiber breakage, interfacial debonding, impact damage, water uptake or dimensional change. Select treatment candidates that address that failure mechanism, then compare them on the same fiber-matrix system with matched processing and conditioning. Treat concentration and duration as experimental variables. Keep tensile, flexural, impact, absorption and swelling as separate results, and choose the treatment that delivers the required balance rather than the largest value in a single test.
