How Casino Surveillance Cameras Use Facial Recognition and License Plate Readers

Casino cameras can support facial recognition and vehicle-plate capture, but those are different processes—and their use varies by operator and jurisdiction. Facial recognition can compare a camera-derived face image with biometric records or an exclusion list; a casino privacy policy also documents collecting and matching parking-area plate details. Neither example proves that every casino uses the same technology, checks the same records, or keeps data for the same length of time.

How facial recognition works in a casino

A camera captures a face image. Recognition software uses that image to compare against biometric information held about people relevant to the venue’s security or exclusion procedures. If the system flags a possible match, it can notify staff or the gambling provider, who may investigate or take an operational step.

Queensland’s gaming regulation describes a system that recognizes, identifies and records a person’s facial image, then compares it with biometric information about excluded people. South Australia’s Consumer and Business Services describes systems that compare entrant images with a barring database and notify a provider about a suspected barred person. These sources explain a possible workflow, not a universal system design.

A possible match is an alert, not proof that someone has violated an exclusion order or done anything wrong. The sources do not establish a general accuracy rate, nor do they show that every casino analyzes every camera feed in real time.

How facial recognition differs from plate capture

Technology Input What it may be compared with What the documented sources establish
Facial recognition A face image captured by a camera Biometric information or an exclusion/barring database Queensland and South Australian sources describe comparison and suspected-match notification for exclusion enforcement. Crown says it uses facial-recognition-equipped cameras for stated security and operational purposes.
Vehicle-plate capture or matching A plate observed in a property car park Personal information held by the operator, according to one casino privacy policy The policy documents collecting plate details and matching them with information the operator holds. It does not establish that the operator uses automated license-plate recognition (LPR), what database is checked, or how long plate information is retained.

Do casinos scan license plates? At least one casino privacy policy says the operator may collect car number-plate details when someone parks on the property and match them with personal information it holds. That disclosure is not enough to conclude that all casinos use automated LPR or share plate data with a particular database.

What casinos say facial recognition is for

Crown says cameras equipped with facial recognition are used throughout its premises and adjacent areas for safety, responsible-gaming operations, keeping excluded people out, and legal or regulatory compliance. Those are Crown’s stated purposes, not a description of every casino’s policy or a rule that applies everywhere.

Local law may narrow the permitted purpose. In Queensland, government guidance says authorized facial-recognition use is limited to identifying people excluded from gaming premises or subject to liquor banning orders. The guidance says marketing, customer profiling and gambling incentives are not permitted uses under Queensland law.

What happens to face scans and other data

There is no single retention rule established for casinos generally. Crown says most biometric information is deleted within a few seconds and that retained information is kept securely on its premises. That is the operator’s statement about its own handling, not a universal retention period.

Queensland’s 2025 regulation requires a gaming-premises system to delete biometric information that does not identify an excluded person. It also prohibits using held information to encourage gambling or connecting it with a customer loyalty or reward program. This requirement concerns biometric information under that Queensland rule; it should not be treated as a general deletion deadline for all casino video or vehicle-plate records.

The available plate-policy example does not state a retention period or establish which other parties, if any, receive plate details. The reviewed sources likewise do not establish a universal cross-jurisdictional rule for LPR notice, retention or data sharing.

How rules and safeguards vary by jurisdiction

Queensland: limited purposes, deletion and signage

Queensland’s 2025 regulation allows facial-recognition systems in relevant licensed premises subject to conditions. For gaming premises, the system is tied to identifying excluded people to prevent entry or remaining in breach of an exclusion order or direction. The rule requires deletion of biometric information that does not identify an excluded person and requires signage. The regulation states: “A licensee who operates a facial recognition technology system under this section must display a sign”. Queensland Government guidance also recommends prominent signs and avoiding camera placement that inadvertently captures passers-by who are not entering the premises.

South Australia: technical approval requirements

South Australia’s Consumer and Business Services describes a provider evaluation and approval process for gaming-venue systems. The systems must be able to identify or verify faces from digital images captured from fixed video sources, securely communicate with the regulator’s barring database, compare entrant images, notify the provider of a suspected barred person, and prevent unauthorized access, use or disclosure. This is an example of rules addressing system capability and data protection as well as purpose.

Ohio: general surveillance-system integrity

Ohio’s casino surveillance rule, effective March 29, 2025, sets controls for surveillance systems generally. It requires protections against obstruction and tampering, redundant data storage, synchronized date and time stamps, authenticated recording exports, failure alerts, access controls, restricted erasure, controlled remote access and user-activity logs. These are general surveillance controls, not specific facial-recognition or LPR requirements.

What casino cameras can—and cannot—tell you

  • Can a casino identify you from its cameras? Facial recognition can compare a camera image with relevant biometric records or exclusion lists where the operator uses the technology and local rules allow it. The available sources do not establish that every casino does so.
  • Does a flagged face mean someone is banned? No. A system can generate a suspected match for staff or a provider to assess; the sources do not establish that a machine-generated match is conclusive.
  • Does a plate reader mean a casino checks a law-enforcement database? Not on the evidence described here. One casino policy says plate details may be matched with personal information the operator holds, but does not name a database or establish automated LPR.
  • Are all surveillance recordings treated like biometric data? Not necessarily. The cited Queensland deletion rule concerns biometric information that does not identify an excluded person; Ohio’s cited controls concern surveillance-system recordings and access. These are distinct categories and rules.
