Carrier-based and land-based drones are separated first by where and how they operate, not by whether they carry weapons. A carrier aircraft must launch, recover, taxi, park and communicate within the tightly constrained environment of an aircraft carrier. A land-based combat drone may use a conventional runway, but it can also use portable launch-and-recovery equipment at a fixed site, on a truck or even on a ship.

Mission is a separate question. The U.S. Navy describes the MQ-25 Stingray primarily as an unmanned aerial refueler, while Boeing describes the MQ-28 Ghost Bat as an autonomous collaborative combat aircraft. “Carrier-based” therefore does not mean “fighter,” and “land-based” does not mean “runway-only.”

What the two labels actually describe

Carrier-based identifies an operating environment. The aircraft and its support system must function on a moving ship with limited deck area, controlled aircraft traffic, shipboard launch and recovery equipment, compact storage and specialized command links. The label can apply to a refueler, surveillance aircraft, communications relay or combat aircraft.

Land-based identifies an aircraft whose normal operations are supported from land. That may mean a permanent airbase and runway, but it may also mean a deployable catapult, net, arresting device or other recovery system. A drone can be land-oriented without being tied to a runway.

Fighter drone is a mission description rather than a basing category. It usually implies an aircraft intended to support air combat, strike missions or crewed fighters, but the official examples in this comparison cover a wider range of roles.

Carrier-based versus land-based: the practical differences

Comparison Carrier-based drone Land-based drone
Operating base Aircraft carrier flight deck, hangar and shipboard support spaces Runway-equipped base or a deployable launch-and-recovery site
Launch Must be compatible with the carrier’s launch system and deck procedures; the X-47B demonstrated catapult launch May use a runway, truck-mounted equipment, a fixed-site apparatus or another portable system
Recovery Must align with the ship’s recovery area and, in the X-47B demonstration, catch an arresting wire with a tailhook May land on a runway or be captured by portable equipment such as the SideArm concept
Handling and storage Deck crews must taxi, move and stow the aircraft among other aircraft and ship operations; folding wings can reduce its footprint Can use larger land facilities or deployable equipment sized for transport
Control and communications Requires integration with shipboard mission control, navigation, air-traffic-control messaging and flight-deck operations Can use ground control and field communications; the exact architecture depends on the system
Mission May refuel, scout, relay data or conduct combat missions for a carrier force May conduct surveillance, strike, air combat or crewed-aircraft teaming from land or a temporary site

These are tendencies, not mutually exclusive boxes. DARPA’s SideArm research effort was intended for fixed sites, trucks and ships, showing that a system designed for land use can be adapted to maritime deployment.

Why a carrier drone needs ship-specific launch and recovery

Catapult launch from a short deck

An aircraft carrier cannot provide a long conventional runway. Its launch equipment accelerates an aircraft to flying speed over the available deck length. During its 2013 carrier trials, the X-47B launched from a carrier catapult. That demonstration shows the integration challenge: the aircraft, launch bar, flight-control software and ship’s launch crew must work as one system.

Arrested recovery with a tailhook

Carrier recovery is more demanding than landing on a long runway. The X-47B used a tailhook to catch an arresting wire on USS George H.W. Bush. According to the Navy account, it slowed from approximately 145 knots to a stop in less than 350 feet. This is a result for that aircraft and event, not a universal performance requirement for every carrier drone.

Precision approaches and wave-offs

Carrier operations require the aircraft to fly a precise approach while remaining compatible with normal flight-deck traffic. NAVAIR recorded 16 precision approaches during the X-47B carrier demonstration: five planned wave-offs, nine touch-and-go landings, two arrested landings and three catapult launches. A wave-off is an intentional decision not to land when the approach is unsuitable; it is part of safe carrier procedure rather than evidence of a failed aircraft.

Deck handling is part of the aircraft system

After landing, a carrier drone must be moved, parked and prepared without blocking other aircraft. NAVAIR identifies deck handling, taxiing, launch and recovery as MQ-25 integration tasks. The aircraft must also fit through the carrier’s handling routes and into available storage. NAVAIR lists the MQ-25 at 51.0 feet long, with a 75.0-foot wingspan when spread and 31.3 feet when folded. Those are published MQ-25 specifications, not dimensions shared by all carrier aircraft.

Why “special landing gear” is an incomplete explanation

When people ask why carrier drones need special landing gear, the most visible answer is the tailhook: a hook-and-shock arrangement designed to engage the deck’s arresting wire. The X-47B’s successful wire catches demonstrate that a carrier aircraft needs a recovery system different from a normal runway landing.

But the hook is only one part of carrier compatibility. The aircraft must also provide a launch interface for the catapult, accurate navigation and flight-control behavior during the approach, and control-system integration with the ship. Deck crews need to taxi and position it safely among manned aircraft. Calling the hook “special landing gear” can obscure this broader aircraft-and-ship system.

Land-based does not mean runway-dependent

A land-based drone can operate from a conventional runway when a prepared airfield is available. For expeditionary operations, however, a runway may be too vulnerable, distant or expensive to build. Portable launch-and-recovery equipment offers another option.

DARPA’s SideArm example

DARPA’s SideArm program sought a portable apparatus that could launch and retrieve unmanned aircraft horizontally. In a 2016 full-scale demonstration described in a 2017 report, the system repeatedly captured a 400-pound Lockheed Martin Fury unmanned aircraft accelerated by an external catapult.

DARPA described a design target for aircraft up to 900 pounds and a capture system sized to fit within the footprint of a standard 20-foot shipping container. The concept was intended for truck-mounted, ship-mounted or standalone fixed-site use. Those figures and goals describe a research and demonstration effort, not a standard capability deployed everywhere.

SideArm illustrates why “land-based” should be read as “not designed around a carrier’s fixed flight deck,” rather than “must always use a runway.” A portable system can give a land-oriented drone a small launch and recovery footprint and can even be carried to a ship.

Basing does not determine the mission

MQ-25: carrier-based, but primarily a refueler

NAVAIR describes the MQ-25 Stingray as an aircraft intended to provide aerial refueling for the Carrier Air Wing and Carrier Strike Group. Its carrier designation reflects where it must operate and the ship integration it requires; its primary mission is refueling, not air-to-air fighting. NAVAIR’s current program page describes it as the planned first operational carrier-based unmanned aircraft. That wording should not be converted into a claim that it is already operational.

MQ-28: a combat role from a different basing context

Boeing’s portfolio describes the MQ-28 Ghost Bat as an “Autonomous collaborative combat aircraft.” The loyal-wingman concept is to fly alongside crewed fighters, extending reach and sensor coverage. This is a combat and teaming role, but the label alone does not establish carrier operation. The aircraft’s mission category and its basing arrangement must be stated separately.

Other possible roles

Depending on the design, either a carrier or land-based drone could perform surveillance, electronic support, communications relay, strike or logistics. A carrier force may use a noncombat drone to extend the endurance of its crewed aircraft, while a land-based combat aircraft may be optimized for direct attack or for teaming with fighters. The words “drone” and “fighter” do not specify launch method, recovery method or level of human control.

What the X-47B proved—and what it did not

The X-47B was a carrier-operation demonstrator. In 2013 it completed catapult launches and arrested recoveries, including a tailhook landing on a carrier and another arrested landing after launch. NAVAIR also reported more than 160 precision approaches and six arrested landings at Patuxent River, along with thousands of simulated landings.

These counts document a substantial test program, but they are not a head-to-head performance comparison with land-based fighter drones. The tests used different environments and objectives, and no directly comparable official statistic establishes a general carrier-versus-land advantage in speed, range, accuracy or survivability.

Capt. Jaime Engdahl, the Navy’s UCAS program manager, said the X-47B approach “looks like any other tactical jet trap on the carrier,” while the technology inside the aircraft and ship was new. That observation captures the central point: a carrier landing may look familiar from the deck, yet it depends on a much broader integration effort.

Autonomy still operates inside a human-directed system

For the X-47B carrier operation, NAVAIR lists relative GPS navigation, advanced flight controls, autonomous vehicle software, high-integrity networks, digitized communications and digitized air-traffic-control messaging. A mission operator aboard the ship directed operations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In this context, “autonomous” describes the aircraft executing navigation and flight tasks within defined rules and commands. It does not mean that no person monitored or directed the mission. Carrier operations require coordination with manned aircraft, deck crews, launch officers and the ship’s command network. Land-based systems likewise vary in how much control is delegated to onboard software and how much remains with a remote operator.

How to classify a drone without mixing up the categories

  1. Identify the normal operating base. Ask whether the design is integrated with a carrier’s flight deck or with land-based facilities and equipment.
  2. Identify the launch method. Look for a carrier catapult, runway, truck-mounted launcher or another apparatus.
  3. Identify the recovery method. A tailhook and arresting wire indicate carrier recovery; a runway or portable capture device points to a different infrastructure model.
  4. Check handling and storage requirements. Carrier aircraft must fit shipboard routes, deck parking and hangar spaces. Folding wings may reduce the stored width.
  5. Separate mission from basing. Label the aircraft as a refueler, surveillance platform, strike aircraft or collaborative combat aircraft only when an authoritative source assigns that role.
  6. Separate demonstration from service status. A successful test, such as the X-47B trials, does not by itself prove that an operational fleet exists.

Common misconceptions

“Every carrier drone is a fighter.”

No. MQ-25 is presented by the Navy as an aerial refueling aircraft. Carrier operation is the demanding constraint; the mission can be support rather than combat.

“Every land-based drone needs a runway.”

No. SideArm was designed around portable launch and recovery at fixed sites, on trucks and on ships. The program’s demonstration shows the possibility of runway-independent operations, not universal deployment.

“The X-47B proves carrier combat drones are already operational.”

No. X-47B carrier achievements were 2013 demonstrations. NAVAIR’s present description of MQ-25 concerns a planned first operational carrier-based unmanned aircraft, so test history and current service status must not be conflated.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Autonomous means unsupervised.”

No. The X-47B used autonomous flight software, but a mission operator aboard the ship directed operations and the aircraft exchanged information through ship and air-traffic-control networks.

Bottom line for readers comparing the two

Carrier-based drones are defined by shipboard integration: catapult or other compatible launch, precise recovery, deck handling, compact stowage and command-and-control links that work inside a carrier strike group. Land-based drones have more room to use runways, but deployable systems can remove that dependency. The mission is independent of the base. A carrier drone may refuel aircraft rather than fight, while a land-oriented drone may act as a collaborative combat aircraft. Always state both dimensions—where it operates and what it is intended to do—to describe the system accurately.
