Cargo reaches the International Space Station through a planned logistics chain: NASA and its partners decide what the crew, experiments and maintenance teams need; pack the manifest; launch a loaded spacecraft; guide it to the station; connect it by docking or robotic berthing; and then unload, use, return or dispose of the material. Food is only one part of these flights. Recent missions carried food with water, fuel, spare hardware, everyday supplies and research equipment.
How an ISS resupply mission works from planning to unloading
Every delivery begins months or years before a rocket leaves the pad. NASA’s Crew and Cargo Program coordinates crew provisions, water, spare parts, science traffic, vehicle arrivals and departures. Its stated goal is to minimize the mass that must be launched while making the best use of returned cargo, recycling opportunities and crew time. That means a manifest is a logistics plan, not simply a shopping list of food.

1. Teams build the cargo manifest
Planners combine several kinds of demand. They estimate how much food and other daily-use material the crew will consume, identify life-support consumables, reserve replacement hardware for maintenance and add investigations that need to reach the station. They also account for where cargo will be stowed, which port will be available, how another spacecraft is scheduled to arrive and what material might need to come back to Earth.
Mass and volume are limited, so a shipment may include high-priority spares instead of a larger quantity of routine items. Cargo that can be recycled, repacked or returned can also change the most efficient manifest. NASA describes the objective as sustaining a constant supply line while maximizing returned mass and useful crew time.

2. A rocket launches the loaded spacecraft
The spacecraft is packed on Earth, checked and placed on its launch vehicle. A recent example is SpaceX’s CRS-34 mission, which launched on a Falcon 9 from Florida on May 15, 2026. NASA reported about 6,500 pounds of science investigations, supplies and equipment aboard that Dragon. The number describes that particular flight; it is not a universal Dragon capacity or an annual food-delivery total.
Launch puts the cargo vehicle on a trajectory that can meet the station’s orbit. The station’s traffic plan determines when a vehicle can depart, which approach path it will use and which connection point is available. Weather, vehicle readiness and range restrictions can all affect the launch date, so a manifest and a launch schedule are related but not identical.
3. The vehicle rendezvous with the station
After launch, flight controllers and onboard systems bring the spacecraft close to the ISS. The final approach is deliberately slow and controlled. The vehicle must match the station’s motion, remain within the approved approach corridor and meet rules for lighting, communications and crew safety before contact is authorized.

Dragon can perform an autonomous docking maneuver. Cygnus is designed to be captured by the station’s robotic arm and then installed at a berthing port. Progress can conduct an automatic docking. These are operationally distinct procedures, even though each ends with cargo attached to the station.
4. Cargo is unloaded and put to work
Once a vehicle is secured and leak checks are complete, astronauts open its hatch and begin transferring items according to the stowage plan. Food and personal-use supplies go to the station’s inventory. Equipment may be moved directly to a laboratory, a maintenance location or a spare-parts storage area. Research investigations can require careful temperature control, protective packaging or a specific installation sequence.

Unloading is crew time, so planners try to make the sequence efficient. Labels, restraint systems and a detailed inventory let astronauts find a package without searching through an entire vehicle. The spacecraft itself can remain attached while its cargo is used, and some vehicles provide additional temporary volume for packing material or waste.
5. The vehicle leaves with a return or disposal load
The final leg depends on the spacecraft. A vehicle capable of surviving re-entry can bring research samples or hardware back to Earth. An expendable vehicle can instead be filled with trash and allowed to burn up during atmospheric re-entry. The fact that a spacecraft delivered cargo does not mean that the same vehicle will return reusable material.

Food and routine crew provisions
Mission reports use the straightforward phrase “food, supplies, and equipment.” Food is packed for the crew’s planned stay and stored with other consumables. A cargo flight may therefore deliver meals and ingredients in the same broad manifest as hygiene items, clothing, packaging and replacement components. The reports do not establish one fixed amount of food delivered per year; the quantity varies with crew size, mission duration and the rest of the cargo plan.
Life-support and maintenance material
Supplies can include items needed to keep the station operating, while equipment can mean anything from a replacement assembly to tools or experiment hardware. Progress 96’s documented load was described as food, fuel and supplies, showing that propellant-related material can share a flight with ordinary provisions. Maintenance cargo is especially valuable because a relatively small spare can prevent a long interruption if an installed part fails.
Science investigations
Research cargo may be an experiment package delivered for installation, consumables for an investigation or samples and hardware that will later return to Earth. The cargo is scheduled around the experiment’s requirements, not merely around available room. A vehicle’s total mass therefore cannot be interpreted as “food capacity”: the same pounds may include very different mixes of food, equipment and research.

How the main cargo vehicles connect to the ISS
Dragon: autonomous docking at Harmony
On CRS-34, Dragon approached the station and autonomously docked at the forward port of the Harmony module. NASA described nearly 6,500 pounds of food, supplies and equipment at the vehicle’s arrival, alongside research investigations. After the attached mission, Dragon splashed down in the Pacific carrying research samples and hardware. This illustrates the reusable-cargo pattern: one vehicle can deliver upmass and later provide downmass.
Cygnus XL: robotic capture and berthing at Unity
Cygnus XL on CRS-24 used a different sequence. Station astronauts captured the approaching vehicle with Canadarm2. Ground controllers then maneuvered it into the Earth-facing port of the Unity module and installed it there, a process called berthing. NASA reported more than 11,000 pounds of research and supplies on that mission.
Berthing gives controllers and the crew a chance to inspect and position the vehicle with the robotic arm rather than asking the spacecraft to make the final physical connection itself. Cygnus XL was planned to depart with debris and undergo atmospheric disposal, so its mission did not include returning research samples to Earth.
Progress: automatic docking at Poisk
Progress 96 automatically docked at the Poisk module. NASA described its cargo as about three tons of food, fuel and supplies. After roughly five months, the vehicle was planned to undock and perform a destructive atmospheric re-entry, carrying station trash. Progress therefore serves both as a delivery vehicle and as a controlled method for removing waste.

| Vehicle and mission | Connection method | Reported cargo | End of cited mission |
|---|---|---|---|
| SpaceX Dragon, CRS-34 | Autonomous docking at Harmony’s forward port | About 6,500 pounds of science investigations, supplies and equipment; the arrival report specifies nearly 6,500 pounds of food, supplies and equipment | Returned research samples and hardware to Earth by Pacific Ocean splashdown |
| Northrop Grumman Cygnus XL, CRS-24 | Captured by Canadarm2 and berthed at Unity’s Earth-facing port | More than 11,000 pounds of research and supplies | Planned departure with debris followed by atmospheric disposal |
| Roscosmos Progress 96 | Automatic docking at Poisk | About three tons of food, fuel and supplies | Planned departure after about five months and destructive re-entry with trash |
Comparing these numbers as if they were standardized payload ratings would be misleading. The missions carried different cargo categories, used different reporting language and had different objectives. “More than 11,000 pounds” of research and supplies on one flight does not prove that Cygnus always carries more than Dragon or Progress.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the station needs several cargo systems
NASA’s FY 2027 Budget Estimates put the reason plainly: “Maintaining ISS requires a fleet of spacecraft to sustain a constant supply line of both crew and cargo that is crucial to operations and research.” A fleet spreads risk and matches different capabilities to different jobs. One vehicle may be preferred when returned samples are a priority; another may be scheduled when disposal of trash is the expected end state.
Multiple vehicles also allow traffic managers to keep food, fuel, maintenance parts and experiments moving when one provider is delayed. The station’s ports, robotic-arm operations and crew workload all become part of the scheduling problem. A cargo flight must fit the station’s overall traffic plan rather than arriving whenever a provider has an available rocket.
How to read future schedules and capacity claims
NASA’s FY 2027 budget request schedules planned SpaceX and Northrop Grumman flights and includes Progress and HTV-X cargo missions. Those entries are plans, not evidence that every listed mission has already flown. A schedule can change as vehicles, launch opportunities and station requirements change.

Common misconceptions about ISS food deliveries
“Cargo flights carry only food.”
Food travels with supplies, equipment, fuel and science investigations. In the cited reports, food is one category within a broader manifest.
“Every cargo spacecraft docks itself.”
Dragon and Progress examples used autonomous docking, while Cygnus XL was captured by Canadarm2 and berthed by ground controllers. Docking and berthing are different connection procedures.
“The biggest reported load is the vehicle’s standard capacity.”
The 6,500-pound, 11,000-pound-plus and three-ton figures belong to individual 2026 flights. They are not interchangeable capacity specifications.
“Everything delivered comes back to Earth.”
Dragon CRS-34 returned samples and hardware, while Cygnus XL and Progress were loaded with debris or trash for atmospheric disposal. Return capability depends on the vehicle and mission.
“There is a single annual food-delivery number.”
No single annual statistic is established by the cited mission reports. Delivery amounts change with crew needs, research traffic, maintenance priorities and the other cargo sharing a flight.
The practical picture
For astronauts, a resupply arrival is the visible end of a much longer chain. Planners balance mass, volume, crew time, experiment deadlines, spare-part risk and station traffic. A rocket then places the selected manifest on the right trajectory; rendezvous systems bring it safely to the ISS; astronauts or robotic systems secure the vehicle; and the crew turns the cargo into meals, maintenance capability and research progress. The same logistics plan also decides whether the spacecraft returns valuable samples or leaves with waste for controlled disposal.
