How Cargo Resupply Missions Deliver Supplies and Experiments to the ISS

Cargo resupply missions send uncrewed spacecraft to the International Space Station (ISS) carrying a mixed manifest: food and other crew provisions, replacement equipment, station hardware, and scientific investigations. After launch, each spacecraft follows its own approach and attachment procedure. One vehicle may dock autonomously, another may be captured by the station’s Canadarm2 robotic arm and berthed at a port, while another docks directly with a station module.

Once attached, astronauts open the hatch, unload the shipment, install or distribute the equipment, and begin work on newly delivered experiments. The return leg also depends on the spacecraft: some missions bring research samples and hardware back to Earth, while others are loaded with trash and sent to destructive re-entry. There is no single resupply process shared by every cargo vehicle.

What a cargo resupply mission actually does

The ISS depends on a continuing flow of material from Earth. Resupply flights keep the crew supplied, replace or add station equipment, and deliver investigations that use the microgravity laboratory. NASA describes commercial resupply as a way to sustain research aboard the station, but a cargo flight is not a science-only delivery. Its manifest normally combines routine logistics with research payloads and hardware, and the mixture changes from mission to mission.

The spacecraft is uncrewed. It is launched by a separate launch vehicle, travels to the station, attaches using a vehicle-specific method, and becomes a temporary extension of the station’s storage and work capacity. The crew then turns the delivered items into usable supplies, installed hardware, or active experiments.

What is carried to the station?

A single shipment can contain several kinds of cargo. The exact packing, environmental controls, and payload-integration process depend on the investigation or item; the available mission descriptions do not establish one standard procedure for every payload.

  • Crew provisions: food and other supplies needed for daily life aboard the station.
  • Research investigations: experiments and supporting materials that astronauts will operate in the station’s laboratory environment.
  • Equipment and replacement hardware: items used to maintain station systems or support ongoing work.
  • Station hardware: larger components or supplies intended for installation, storage, or future operations.

NASA’s descriptions show why “resupply” and “science delivery” overlap but are not synonyms. A flight can carry a substantial research load while also bringing food, fuel, and routine supplies. Conversely, a shipment described as cargo is not automatically an experiment mission.

How a resupply flight reaches the ISS

The delivery chain has a recognizable sequence, but the details change with the spacecraft and mission.

  1. The manifest is assembled for that flight. Mission planners combine crew provisions, equipment, station hardware, and investigations. No universal selection or packing workflow is established for every payload, so those steps should be treated as payload-specific rather than as one ISS-wide recipe.
  2. A launch vehicle places the cargo spacecraft on its route. The rocket and the cargo ship are separate parts of the system. In NASA’s May 2026 example, a Dragon spacecraft launched on a Falcon 9 two days before docking with the station.
  3. The spacecraft approaches the station. Navigation and final approach are conducted according to the vehicle’s design. The arriving ship must reach the correct station interface and follow the safety rules for that port.
  4. The vehicle attaches using its assigned method. Dragon autonomously docked with the Harmony module in the cited May 2026 mission. NASA’s Cygnus XL CRS-24 overview instead described astronauts using Canadarm2 to grapple the spacecraft and robotically install it at Unity’s Earth-facing port. Progress 91 docked at the aft port of the Zvezda module. These are examples of different operations, not a complete catalog of every cargo configuration.
  5. The crew opens the hatch and transfers the load. After the connection is confirmed, astronauts move supplies and equipment from the visiting vehicle into the station. NASA’s May 2026 account specifically says the crew opened Dragon’s hatch, unloaded supplies, and began new experiments.
  6. The station team operates, stores, or installs the cargo. An arriving spacecraft is a delivery platform; the crew and the station’s facilities make the research operational. Some items are consumed, some remain in storage, and some are installed as hardware. The timing and handling are determined by each payload’s instructions.

How cargo spacecraft attach to the station

“Docking” and “berthing” describe different attachment operations. In the cited Dragon case, the spacecraft autonomously docked, meaning the vehicle completed the final connection without Canadarm2 capturing it. In the Cygnus XL example, the arm captured the spacecraft and moved it into position for robotic berthing. Progress 91 is described simply as docking at Zvezda’s aft port. A reader should therefore identify both the vehicle and the station port before assuming how an arrival occurred.

Dragon: autonomous docking at Harmony

NASA reported that the Dragon cargo spacecraft docked autonomously with Harmony in May 2026. The Falcon 9 launch occurred two days before that docking. NASA reported nearly 6,500 pounds of cargo delivered on May 17, 2026; that is the amount for that mission, not a standard Dragon payload capacity. After attachment, the crew opened the hatch, unloaded supplies, and started the newly delivered investigations.

Cygnus XL: Canadarm2 capture and berthing at Unity

For the CRS-24 overview, NASA described astronauts using Canadarm2 to grapple Cygnus XL and robotically install it at Unity’s Earth-facing port. The overview expected approximately 11,000 pounds of science and supplies for that specific flight. The figure is an overview estimate for that mission, not a fleet-wide capacity or an average for every Cygnus flight. Because the spacecraft is captured and positioned by the robotic arm, this operation should not be described as autonomous docking.

Progress 91: docking at Zvezda

NASA reported that Progress 91 docked at the aft port of Zvezda in March 2025. The spacecraft carried about three tons of food, fuel, and supplies in that mission-specific account. NASA said it was expected to remain attached for approximately six months. The stated cargo amount describes that flight’s food, fuel, and supplies, not a universal Progress payload figure.

What happens after astronauts open the hatch?

Arrival is only the midpoint of the delivery. The crew must turn a pressurized cargo vehicle into useful station inventory and working research.

Unload and inventory

Astronauts remove bags, containers, equipment, and experiment materials from the visiting spacecraft. They identify what is needed immediately, what belongs in station storage, and what must be moved to a particular laboratory location. NASA’s May 2026 Dragon report explicitly links hatch opening, unloading, and the start of new experiments, showing that transfer and research operations are connected parts of the same mission rather than separate Earth-based events.

Install or configure hardware

Hardware may be destined for station maintenance, a future installation, or support of an investigation. The cargo vehicle itself does not perform the station work after delivery; astronauts and station systems do. Payload-specific instructions govern how an item is handled, and the available mission summaries do not support a single generic installation sequence.

Begin the investigations

Experiments become active only after the crew has access to them and the station provides the required working environment. This is why a cargo manifest can list research while the actual experiment work occurs later, inside the ISS. Commercial resupply therefore supports a continuing research program rather than delivering a finished result at the moment of docking.

Does the cargo come back to Earth?

Sometimes, but not always. The outbound role depends on the spacecraft and the mission plan.

Returning samples and hardware

NASA reported that a Dragon spacecraft departed in June 2026 carrying research samples and hardware back to Earth. That example demonstrates a return capability: material that has been operated, produced, or stored on the ISS can be placed aboard Dragon for recovery and analysis on Earth. It does not establish that every cargo vehicle can return experiments or that every Dragon flight carries return cargo.

Loading trash for disposal

NASA’s Progress 91 report said the spacecraft would remain docked for approximately six months and then re-enter carrying trash loaded by the crew. In that mission, the visiting vehicle served as a disposal route after its delivery work. This is different from returning valuable samples in a recoverable spacecraft. “Resupply” can therefore include both delivery and an outbound phase, but the post-mission disposition must be stated for the particular vehicle and flight.

Why the return path differs

Some spacecraft are used for recoverable cargo, while others leave with waste for destructive re-entry. The mission descriptions do not provide a general return rate, a universal experiment-recovery percentage, or a complete capability comparison across the international and commercial fleet. Those details should not be inferred from one Dragon or Progress example.

Mission examples side by side

Mission or vehicle Arrival method Station interface Reported cargo Post-mission role
Dragon, May 2026 Autonomous docking Harmony Nearly 6,500 pounds delivered on May 17, 2026; mission-specific amount Dragon later demonstrated return of research samples and hardware in a June 2026 departure account
Cygnus XL CRS-24 overview Canadarm2 grapple and robotic berthing Unity, Earth-facing port Approximately 11,000 pounds of science and supplies expected for that flight; overview estimate Not stated in the cited overview
Progress 91, March 2025 Docking Zvezda, aft port About three tons of food, fuel, and supplies; mission-specific amount Expected to stay approximately six months, then re-enter with crew-loaded trash

The table compares the axes that matter operationally: how the spacecraft arrives, where it attaches, what that particular flight carried, how long it was expected to remain, and what happened afterward. It is not a ranking of vehicle performance, and the figures cannot be converted into standard capacities.

Why different attachment methods are used

The cited missions show that the ISS accommodates more than one cargo interface. Autonomous docking lets a compatible spacecraft conduct its own final approach and connection, as Dragon did at Harmony. Robotic capture and berthing, as described for Cygnus XL at Unity, uses the station’s arm and astronauts’ commands to position the vehicle. Direct docking at a module port, as reported for Progress 91 at Zvezda, is another arrangement.

These distinctions matter when following a mission broadcast or reading a status report. “Arrived at the ISS” does not tell you whether the crew operated Canadarm2, whether the spacecraft completed the final approach itself, or which module received it. The vehicle name, station module, and port provide that missing context.

What cargo resupply missions make possible

Resupply flights sustain two parallel needs. First, they keep people and station systems supplied with food, fuel, equipment, and replacement hardware. Second, they deliver investigations that use the ISS as a laboratory. NASA quoted acting Administrator Sean Duffy on August 24, 2025: “Commercial resupply missions to the International Space Station deliver science that helps prove technologies for Artemis lunar missions and beyond.” The statement describes the strategic purpose of the research cargo, while the individual mission reports show how that cargo physically reaches and leaves the station.

The practical chain is therefore: a mixed manifest is launched, the cargo spacecraft follows its own approach profile, the vehicle docks or is captured and berthed at a specified port, astronauts unload it, and the station team conducts the work. The departure may recover samples and hardware or dispose of trash, depending on the spacecraft and mission.

Limits on broad claims about ISS cargo

  • Mission cargo figures are not standard vehicle capacities. Nearly 6,500 pounds for the May 2026 Dragon flight, approximately 11,000 pounds for the Cygnus XL CRS-24 overview, and about three tons for Progress 91 are all tied to named missions.
  • The examples do not establish a typical annual ISS cargo throughput or a standard payload mix.
  • The examples do not provide a comprehensive technical comparison of every international and commercial cargo spacecraft.
  • There is no single universal procedure for selecting, packing, protecting, or integrating experiments; those details vary by payload.
  • Not every cargo spacecraft both returns research and disposes of trash. Those are different post-mission roles illustrated by the Dragon and Progress examples.
