How Cannibalism Differs From Scavenging in Prehistoric Animals

Cannibalism and scavenging describe different things. Cannibalism identifies who was eaten: an individual of the eater’s own species or kind. Scavenging identifies when and how the food became available: the animal fed on a carcass that was already dead. The categories can overlap. A prehistoric predator that ate a dead member of its own species was both a cannibal and a scavenger, while a carnivore that killed another species and consumed it was a predator but not a cannibal.

Fossils usually preserve evidence of feeding more readily than evidence of the victim’s exact cause of death. A tooth mark can show that an animal’s jaws contacted and damaged bone or skin, but it rarely proves by itself whether the marked animal was killed by the feeder, died of another cause, or had already been dead. Researchers therefore combine mark shape and placement with the condition, arrangement and geological history of the remains.

The key difference: species identity versus carcass condition

What cannibalism means

Cannibalism is feeding on an individual of one’s own species (or, in some studies, the same closely defined kind). The defining relationship is between eater and victim. If a theropod consumed another member of its species, the feeding was cannibalistic regardless of whether the victim had been killed moments earlier, died from injury or disease, or lay as a long-decomposed carcass.

What scavenging means

Scavenging is feeding on an animal that was already dead when the feeder accessed it. The scavenger might have found a naturally dead carcass, taken remains from another predator, or reached an animal after an earlier attack. Scavenging says nothing about whether the eater and the carcass belonged to the same species.

Why the terms are not opposites

The terms answer separate questions. “Was the victim a member of the eater’s species?” addresses cannibalism. “Was the food already a carcass when feeding began?” addresses scavenging. A carnivore can therefore be:

  • Neither: it killed and ate another species, with no evidence that the victim was already dead.
  • A predator and a cannibal: it killed and ate a conspecific.
  • A scavenger but not a cannibal: it fed on a dead animal of another species.
  • A cannibal and a scavenger: it fed on a dead member of its own species.

This distinction prevents a common error: finding conspecific bite marks and immediately claiming that the biter killed the individual. Eating one’s own kind and killing one’s own kind are different propositions.

Why fossil evidence rarely settles the timing of death

The study of what happens to remains between death and fossilization is called taphonomy. Decay, transport by water or wind, scavenging, weathering, burial, compaction and chemical alteration can all change a carcass. A bone may move away from the body, break after drying, or acquire a mark long after the animal died. Those events form a sequence, and a fossil records only the surviving parts of it.

At Dinosaur National Monument, for example, tooth-marked bones in a river-transported bonebed support scavenging, but the river’s transport history is part of the interpretation. Water could have separated bones, concentrated them, abraded their surfaces and mixed remains from different animals. The marks must be evaluated in that setting rather than treated as a simple snapshot of an attack.

Researchers ask whether marks were made on fresh, flexible tissue or on dry, brittle bone; whether the skeleton was still articulated; whether carcass parts are unusually missing; and whether marks cluster where flesh or marrow would have been accessible. None of these observations is decisive alone. Together they can make feeding on a carcass more or less plausible than an attack on a living animal.

How scientists read a possible feeding trace

Mark morphology

Tooth contact can leave punctures, scores, furrows, pits or striations. A puncture records concentrated force, while a score or furrow can result when a tooth dragged across a surface. Researchers compare the dimensions and geometry of marks with the teeth of animals present in the same formation. Size comparisons can narrow the likely trace-maker, but wear, breakage and incomplete marks limit precision.

Placement and distribution

Location matters because jaws reach some parts of a carcass more easily than others. Clusters around muscle attachments, limb ends or marrow-rich shafts may indicate feeding. Marks distributed across many bones can indicate prolonged access to a carcass, while a few concentrated marks may reflect a brief encounter. The absence of marks is not proof that no feeding occurred: surfaces may have been lost, weathered or buried before they were exposed.

Condition and association of the remains

An articulated skeleton, associated skin and bones, or an isolated, transported bone each carries different taphonomic implications. Weathered surfaces can acquire cracks that resemble damage, and transport can abrade edges. Researchers therefore document whether bones were fresh or weathered, how they were arranged, and which elements are represented before inferring predation or scavenging.

What a mark can and cannot establish

A reliable bite mark generally establishes contact between a tooth-bearing animal and a remain. It can support feeding when the mark penetrates bone or occurs in a pattern consistent with flesh removal. It does not automatically establish that the biter caused death, that the carcass was fresh, or that every marked bone came from the same interaction. Those stronger claims require independent contextual evidence.

Published cases that show the distinction

Majungatholus in Madagascar: evidence for cannibalistic feeding

Rogers, Krause and Curry Rogers examined tooth-marked dinosaur bones from three well-documented localities in the Upper Cretaceous Maevarano Formation of Madagascar. Their 2003 Nature paper concluded that Majungatholus atopus fed on sauropods and on members of its own kind. The conspecific damage is evidence for cannibalistic feeding: the proposed feeder and at least some consumed animals were the same species.

The conclusion does not show that Majungatholus killed every marked individual. A conspecific could have died from another cause and then been eaten. The scientifically supported statement is narrower and stronger: the bone evidence indicates that this dinosaur consumed members of its own species. The case is therefore an example of cannibalism, while the predation-versus-scavenging timing remains a separate question.

Mygatt-Moore Quarry: many bite marks, but no universal behavior rate

Drumheller and colleagues surveyed 2,368 vertebrate fossils from the Upper Jurassic Mygatt-Moore Quarry in Colorado. In their 2020 PLOS ONE study, 684 specimens—28.885% of the surveyed fossils—had at least one theropod bite mark. The marks included punctures, scores, furrows, pits and striations. The authors described this as an unusually high frequency compared with other dinosaur-dominated assemblages and discussed feeding, scavenging and possible cannibalism in a stressed ecosystem.

The percentage is a property of that quarry sample, not a prevalence estimate for prehistoric behavior. It means that 684 of 2,368 examined fossil specimens bore theropod bite marks. It does not mean that 28.885% of prehistoric animals scavenged, cannibalized, or were killed by theropods. A fossil sample can be biased by which bones survived, were collected and were selected for study.

The study emphasizes that bite marks document trophic interaction. Distinguishing predation from scavenging requires site context, mark placement, mark size, and the representation of prey elements. Direct fossil evidence for scavenging by large carnivores, including cannibalism, is uncommon, so the interpretation must remain tied to the quarry and its depositional history.

Dakota the Edmontosaurus mummy: scavenging recorded in skin and bone

“Dakota” is a Late Cretaceous Edmontosaurus mummy discovered in North Dakota. A 2022 account by London’s Natural History Museum describes unhealed bite and puncture marks on the preserved skin and bones. Researchers proposed that a crocodyliform, possibly Brachychampsa montana, tore open the carcass to reach flesh. The attribution of marks on the tail is less secure.

The marks indicate activity during or after death, but the exact sequence is an interpretation rather than a direct observation. One proposed pathway is that a crocodile relative opened the carcass, the body dried, and durable skin later fossilized. The case is important because it shows that a partially scavenged carcass can preserve soft tissue as well as bone.

“Not only has Dakota [the dinosaur mummy] taught us that durable soft tissues like skin can be preserved on partially scavenged carcasses, but these soft tissues can also provide a unique source of information about the other animals that interacted with a carcass after death.” — Dr Clint Boyd, quoted by the Natural History Museum (2022).

Comparing the evidence in the three cases

Case Proposed feeder and food Trace evidence What it supports Key qualification
Majungatholus, Maevarano Formation Majungatholus atopus and conspecific dinosaurs, as well as sauropods Tooth-marked bones from three documented Upper Cretaceous localities Conspecific consumption, therefore cannibalistic feeding Consumption does not prove that the feeder killed the marked individual
Mygatt-Moore Quarry, Colorado Theropods feeding on vertebrate remains; possible conspecific interactions discussed Punctures, scores, furrows, pits and striations on 684 of 2,368 surveyed fossils Frequent trophic interaction, including feeding and scavenging; possible cannibalism The 28.885% figure applies only to this surveyed fossil sample and is not a behavior rate
Dakota, North Dakota Edmontosaurus carcass; a crocodyliform, possibly Brachychampsa montana Unhealed bite and puncture marks in preserved skin and bones Feeding during or after death is consistent with the marks Trace-maker and drying-and-preservation pathway are proposed; tail attribution is less secure

A practical way to evaluate a new fossil claim

  1. Separate the questions. Identify whether the claim concerns species identity (cannibalism), carcass timing (scavenging), or both.
  2. Check the trace-maker. Compare mark dimensions and shape with teeth of animals known from the formation. Treat an identification as tentative when several animals could have produced the marks.
  3. Record the mark pattern. Note whether marks are punctures, scores, furrows, pits or striations, and document their position and distribution on each element.
  4. Reconstruct the carcass state. Ask whether bones were articulated or transported, whether surfaces were weathered, and whether skin or other soft tissue remained.
  5. Reconstruct the deposit. Include water or wind transport, burial, weathering and post-burial alteration. A bonebed is a geological accumulation, not automatically a single feeding event.
  6. Use the narrowest defensible conclusion. “A theropod tooth contacted this bone” is weaker than “the animal fed here,” which is weaker than “the animal scavenged,” and still different from “the animal killed its prey.”

Why human archaeological criteria need caution

The Australian Museum’s discussion of identifying what humans ate addresses a related but distinct problem. For human remains, researchers may distinguish animal tooth damage from tool marks, determine whether bone was fresh when modified, compare treatment of human and animal remains, assess marrow extraction and breakage, and test alternatives such as ritual defleshing or secondary burial. Those criteria are useful for human archaeological interpretation, but they should not be transferred automatically to dinosaur tooth-mark claims, which involve different traces, depositional settings and behavioral possibilities. The museum’s overview is available at Australian Museum.

The evidence rule to remember

Fossils can demonstrate that an animal fed on another animal when marks, anatomy and context align. Establishing cannibalism requires evidence that eater and consumed animal were conspecific. Establishing scavenging requires evidence that feeding occurred on a carcass. Establishing that the feeder caused death is a further claim, and tooth marks alone usually do not carry it. Keeping those questions separate produces interpretations that are both more cautious and more informative.
