There is no single AWS flag that says an AI agent is compromised. You establish that conclusion by correlating several kinds of evidence: GuardDuty findings and model activity, the AWS identity making each request, CloudTrail API records, network and DNS behavior, data-access events, and runtime activity on the compute that hosts the agent.
Start with the agent’s normal behavior, then look for deviations and security-control changes. A strange model invocation or one alert is an investigation lead, not proof. Confidence comes from a timeline in which independent signals point to the same identity, host, resource, and time period.

What “compromised” means for an AWS AI agent
An agent can be abused at more than one layer. An attacker may obtain the role used by the agent, manipulate prompts or tool inputs, invoke models from an unusual source, move data through a connected service, or execute code on the host or container. Those cases produce different evidence. A model-invocation alert alone cannot tell you which layer was breached.
Treat the question as an evidence problem. Define the agent’s account, Region, runtime, role or other credentials, AI service, connected data stores, and expected invocation pattern. This scope is the context you need for an investigation; AWS does not provide a universal inventory that automatically answers it for every workload.

Then compare observed activity with that baseline. The most persuasive cases combine an abnormal AI event with a matching identity change, API sequence, data access, network connection, or runtime finding. If the signals do not line up, keep the case open as suspicious activity rather than declaring a compromise.
Which evidence layers to examine
Use the layers below together. Each answers a different question and has different coverage and prerequisites.
| Layer | What to inspect | What an abnormal pattern can indicate | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Model and AI-service activity | GuardDuty AI Protection findings and CloudTrail data events for Amazon Bedrock, Amazon Bedrock AgentCore, and Amazon SageMaker AI | An invocation that departs from the identity’s or account’s baseline, such as an unusual IP address, API, or model | AI Protection must be enabled, and finding availability depends on the service and Region |
| Identity and API use | The principal or role, request parameters, API calls, resources, source, and timing in CloudTrail | A role used outside its normal schedule, from an unexpected source, or against resources the agent does not normally touch | A valid role can be abused without any credential-creation event |
| Security controls | Changes to Bedrock guardrails and model-invocation logging | Attempts to remove guardrails or disable logging to weaken protection or conceal activity | A control change is suspicious context, not independent proof of an intrusion |
| Network and DNS | VPC flow records and DNS requests from the agent’s host, task, or pod | Unexpected destinations, timing, or outbound volume that accompanies suspicious API or data activity | Network telemetry may not identify the exact prompt, model request, or data object |
| Data access | S3 data events and access to other stores connected to the agent | Reads, writes, or enumeration outside the agent’s normal data scope, especially near an abnormal invocation | Visibility depends on the relevant data-event logging and service coverage |
| Runtime | GuardDuty runtime findings and activity on the EC2 instance, EKS cluster, or ECS task running the agent | Malware, unexpected processes, container abuse, or other host-level behavior | Runtime evidence may show a host threat without explaining how the AI workflow was manipulated |
| Correlated attack sequence | GuardDuty findings that combine AI Protection signals with potentially compromised-credential activity | A multi-step sequence in which AI and credential evidence reinforce each other | AI Protection findings do not create an attack sequence on their own |
A practical investigation sequence
1. Build a precise scope before interpreting alerts
Record the AWS account and Region, the agent’s runtime, its role or other credentials, the AI service it calls, connected buckets or databases, and expected users, schedules, models, APIs, and source networks. Note whether the agent normally runs interactively, on a schedule, or as an event-driven workload. Without this context, a legitimate change in model, IP address, or call volume can look malicious.
Also list the controls that should be present: Bedrock guardrails, model-invocation logging, CloudTrail data events, VPC flow and DNS telemetry, S3 data events, and runtime monitoring where applicable. Mark which are actually enabled. Missing telemetry is an uncertainty to resolve, not evidence that no compromise occurred.
2. Check GuardDuty findings first
Review findings for the account and Region associated with the agent. Look for anomalous model invocation, prompt-injection, cost-harvesting, potentially compromised credentials, and runtime findings where those finding types apply. Capture the finding time, affected resource, principal, source, and severity, then preserve the original finding details for the timeline.
GuardDuty AI Protection analyzes CloudTrail data for supported Bedrock, Bedrock AgentCore, and SageMaker AI activity together with management events. AWS describes its anomaly findings as deviations from a baseline for model-invocation activity; examples include an unusual IP address, API, or model for an identity or account.

Before treating an absent finding as reassuring, verify that the relevant protection is enabled and supported for the workload’s Region. AI Protection must be enabled to generate its AI Protection finding types. AWS says it collects relevant CloudTrail data events through a service-linked channel for monitored accounts; check that the channel is active for the account under investigation.

3. Reconstruct the CloudTrail timeline
For every suspicious interval, examine the CloudTrail event record and place it on a timeline. Identify:
- the principal, role session, or other credential that made the request;
- the API operation and whether it was a management event or a data event;
- the resource, model, bucket, or other target;
- the event time and the surrounding calls before and after it;
- the source address, user agent, Region, and invocation origin recorded in the event; and
- changes to permissions, guardrails, logging, networking, or the runtime near the same time.
Compare the sequence with known deployments and maintenance. A role session that invokes a new model immediately after an approved release is different from the same call followed by broad bucket reads and an unfamiliar outbound connection. Preserve the raw event and its context rather than relying only on a summarized finding.
4. Correlate identity behavior with AI activity
Ask whether the identity that invoked the model is the identity expected to do so. Check for role use from a new source, calls at an unusual hour, a sudden increase in invocation volume, or access to APIs and resources outside the agent’s established job. Look for a credential-related finding or other activity that starts shortly before the abnormal model call.
GuardDuty can use AI Protection signals in attack-sequence correlation involving potentially compromised credentials, but AI Protection must be enabled for those signals to participate. AWS states that AI Protection findings do not generate an attack sequence by themselves. Therefore, a correlated finding is stronger than an isolated AI alert, while an isolated alert still requires investigation.

Review management events for unusual removal of Bedrock guardrails or disabled logging of Bedrock model invocations. AWS lists both as examples of suspicious AI-workload activity detected by GuardDuty’s foundational plan. Determine who made the change, from where, and whether it was part of an approved deployment.

- [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by
Pay attention to the order of events. A control change immediately before unusual model calls, data reads, or outbound connections is more concerning than a documented configuration update performed by the owning team. Restore required controls through your normal change process, but preserve evidence before altering the environment if your incident-response procedure requires forensic collection.
6. Examine the environment around the agent
Investigate the compute that executes the agent, not just the model service. For an EC2 instance, inspect the instance and its role; for EKS, identify the cluster, namespace, pod, and service account; for ECS, identify the cluster, task, container, and task role. Match runtime times to the CloudTrail timeline.
AWS’s Agentic AI Lens recommends monitoring API patterns, VPC flows, DNS, S3 data events, and runtime activity. Use those layers to answer questions model logs cannot: Did the host contact an unexpected destination? Did a process or container behave abnormally? Did the agent read or write data outside its normal scope? Did a suspicious model call coincide with data movement?
GuardDuty’s broader signal set includes CloudTrail, VPC flow, DNS, EKS audit, and supported compute-runtime telemetry. A runtime finding may identify a host-level threat even when the model-invocation record looks ordinary, so do not stop at AI-service events.
7. Preserve evidence and escalate
Keep the relevant GuardDuty finding JSON or console details, CloudTrail events, network and DNS records, data-access events, runtime findings, and a written timeline. Record the account, Region, resource identifiers, identities, timestamps, and actions taken by responders.
Where CloudTrail log-file integrity validation is configured, use it to help determine whether delivered log files were modified or deleted. Integrity validation does not prove that an agent is safe; it helps you assess whether the audit records you are using remained trustworthy.

Escalate according to the organization’s incident-response process when multiple layers corroborate abuse, when credentials may be compromised, when sensitive data was accessed, or when logging or guardrails were disabled. Containment actions should be approved for the workload: for example, restricting a role, isolating a host or task, or suspending an invocation path can affect production behavior, so preserve the timeline and coordinate the change.

Anomalous model invocation
This finding means the invocation differs from the learned activity baseline, not that an attacker is proven. Validate the model, API, source address, principal, time, and deployment context. A new model introduced by a release may explain the deviation; an unfamiliar source followed by broad data access needs deeper response.
Prompt-injection finding
GuardDuty AI Protection prompt-injection findings depend on Bedrock Guardrails evaluation events. Confirm that the relevant guardrail evaluation and model-invocation records exist, then inspect the associated identity, prompt or tool context available to your logging design, and downstream API or data activity. Treat the finding as evidence of an attempted manipulation; determine whether it caused unauthorized actions.
Cost-harvesting behavior
Unexpected invocation volume, model selection, or timing can indicate attempts to consume your account’s AI capacity or generate usage for another purpose. Compare the activity with approved workloads and check the principal and source in CloudTrail. Cost impact alone does not establish data compromise, but it can reveal a hijacked role or exposed invocation path.
Potentially compromised credentials
Follow the credential’s activity across services. Identify when the role or key first behaved unusually, which resources it touched, and whether the AI agent’s calls are part of the same sequence. A valid credential used from an unexpected source can be as important as an explicit credential-change event.

Deciding whether the evidence is strong enough
Use a simple confidence test rather than a single-alert rule:
| Evidence pattern | How to treat it | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| One unusual invocation with no other deviation | Investigation lead | Verify deployment context and establish whether the baseline is accurate |
| Unusual invocation plus unexpected identity, source, API, or model | High-priority suspicion | Expand the CloudTrail timeline and check connected data and network activity |
| AI anomaly plus guardrail or logging removal | Strong indication of deliberate weakening or concealment | Preserve evidence, confirm authorization, and follow containment procedures |
| AI, identity, data, network, or runtime signals that share a time window and resource | Corroborated compromise hypothesis | Escalate through incident response and protect affected credentials and data |
| No findings and incomplete telemetry | Inconclusive | Verify protection coverage and logging before concluding that the agent is clean |
Important boundaries of AWS detection
GuardDuty AI Protection is service-specific. Its documented scope includes Amazon Bedrock, Amazon Bedrock AgentCore, and Amazon SageMaker AI activity; it is not a universal detector for every model, framework, or self-hosted agent. Confirm the supported service, Region, and enabled protection plan for your workload.
AI Protection relies on CloudTrail data and management events, so gaps in event delivery, retention, or configuration reduce what can be inferred. Baseline-based anomalies also require interpretation: legitimate launches, migrations, and emergency operations can look unusual.
Recommended Free Tools
GuardDuty findings are not a substitute for host, network, or data-store investigation. Conversely, runtime and network telemetry may reveal abuse that never produces an AI-specific finding. Use the layers together and document what each one can and cannot establish.
What a defensible conclusion looks like
A defensible incident note names the affected account and Region, agent runtime, identity, resources, time window, findings, and corroborating events. It states whether the evidence shows an attempted prompt injection, unauthorized model use, credential abuse, data access, runtime compromise, or only an unexplained deviation. It also records telemetry gaps and the checks still pending.
The practical standard is corroboration: an abnormal AI event tied to an unexpected identity or source, followed by unauthorized API, data, network, or runtime behavior. Until that chain exists, describe the situation as suspicious and continue investigating rather than claiming that the agent has definitely been compromised.
