How can workers prepare for AI-driven changes to their roles?

Prepare for AI by analyzing how your tasks may change, learning to use approved systems safely, and strengthening the judgment and people skills those systems cannot reliably provide. Treat AI exposure as a reason to plan—not as a prediction that your job will disappear. The International Labour Organization (ILO) says most exposed jobs are more likely to be transformed than made redundant because human input remains necessary (ILO, 20 May 2025).

Will AI replace my job?

Not necessarily. A job is a bundle of tasks, and an AI system may automate some of them, assist with others, create new duties, or change the amount of time needed for each. “Exposure” measures whether tasks could be affected by generative AI; it does not forecast that a particular worker will be dismissed.

The ILO’s 2025 global assessment found that one in four workers are in an occupation with some degree of generative-AI exposure. Its conclusion is that transformation is more likely than complete redundancy because occupations still contain tasks requiring context, accountability, interaction, or physical action (ILO, 20 May 2025). The OECD separately estimated that around one-quarter of workers were exposed to generative AI during 2022–2024; that is a different measure and period, so the figures should not be combined (OECD, 2026).

Exposure is also not the same as automation risk. The OECD finds that some high-skill occupations are highly exposed yet less likely to be automated because they depend on non-routine cognitive and social work. Routine, predictable tasks generally face greater automation pressure. Your employer’s choices, local demand, regulations, tool capability, and worker protections will determine what actually changes.

Map the tasks in your role before choosing a course

Start with your current work rather than a list of fashionable job titles. Create an inventory of recurring duties from a typical week, then mark the kind of work each duty involves. This is a planning exercise, not a forecast model.

Task pattern Questions to ask Preparation focus
Drafting or rewriting Can an approved tool produce a first draft? What tone, facts, and approvals are required? Prompting with context, editing, attribution, and quality checks
Summarizing or classifying Are the source documents allowed in the tool? What errors would matter most? Data handling, sampling, verification, and escalation
Analysis or calculation Can the system explain its method and use the right data? Independent calculations, assumptions checks, and reproducible records
Customer or colleague interaction Which parts require empathy, negotiation, or accountability? Communication, relationship management, and appropriate use of assistance
Physical or hands-on work Could AI change scheduling, instructions, monitoring, or equipment? Technical literacy, safety procedures, and adaptation to new workflows
Judgment and decisions Who is responsible for the outcome, and what evidence is required? Critical thinking, domain expertise, documentation, and human sign-off

For each task, record its frequency, the information it uses, the consequence of an error, and who currently reviews it. Then identify three categories: tasks that might be assisted, tasks that might be automated under policy, and tasks that are likely to become more important because someone must frame the problem, check the output, or explain a decision.

Ask what is changing in your workplace

Technology adoption is uneven. OECD data show that AI use among firms in OECD countries rose from about 7% in 2021 to 20% in 2025; this is the share of firms adopting AI, not the share of workers using it (OECD, 2026). Ask your manager, union representative, professional association, or trusted colleague:

  • Who reviews AI-assisted work and signs off on consequential decisions?
  • What training, paid time, or accessibility support is available?
  • How will workload, performance targets, and errors be handled during the transition?

These questions turn a vague fear about “AI” into a specific conversation about work design and accountability.

Build practical AI literacy

AI literacy is more than knowing how to open a chatbot. The ILO describes safe and ethical understanding and use of AI as a foundational capability and says it is “an essential enabler of human agency and inclusion in AI-augmented environments” (ILO, 13 August 2026). Learn the limits of the systems your employer actually permits.

Learn the complete safe-use cycle

  1. Choose the right tool. Use only employer-approved applications for work. Consumer tools may retain prompts or use them for other purposes, and an apparently harmless document can contain confidential or personal information.
  2. Give useful context without oversharing. State the task, audience, format, constraints, and definitions. Remove names, account numbers, health information, passwords, proprietary code, and other sensitive details unless policy explicitly allows their use.
  3. Request a verifiable output. Ask for assumptions, sources, uncertainty, calculations, or a list of missing information when the tool supports those features. A confident tone is not evidence of accuracy.
  4. Check before relying on the result. Verify factual claims against authoritative records, recalculate numbers independently, test code in a safe environment, inspect for missing cases, and check tone and accessibility. Keep a human reviewer for decisions affecting customers, colleagues, safety, finances, or legal rights.
  5. Document and escalate. Record the tool, date, important inputs, checks performed, and any corrections. Report recurring errors, privacy concerns, or unclear accountability through your workplace process.

Practice first on low-risk, non-sensitive tasks such as restructuring your own notes or generating alternative outlines. The goal is to learn when the system helps and when it should not be used, not to maximize the number of tasks handed to it.

Strengthen the skills that complement AI

Digital familiarity works best alongside capabilities that help a person frame a problem and judge a result. ILO and OECD analyses emphasize critical thinking, communication, collaboration, adaptability, continued learning, and role-specific expertise, as well as foundational literacy and numeracy (OECD, 2026).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Critical thinking: define success criteria, test assumptions, detect unsupported claims, and recognize when evidence is insufficient.
  • Communication: explain an AI-assisted recommendation in plain language, ask better questions, and adapt the message to different audiences.
  • Collaboration: negotiate responsibilities between people and systems, gather subject-matter review, and resolve disagreements about outputs.
  • Problem solving: break ambiguous work into stages, compare alternatives, and design a fallback when automation fails.
  • Adaptability and learning: update workflows as tools and policies change instead of treating one interface or prompt pattern as permanent.
  • Domain judgment: retain the technical, professional, or customer knowledge needed to spot a plausible-looking but wrong answer.

Do not assume that preparation means becoming an AI engineer. In an OECD analysis of vacancies in ten countries, highly AI-exposed occupations included administrative, financial, technical, management, and human-resources work. About one-third of vacancies were in highly exposed occupations, ranging from 31% in Austria to 45% in the United Kingdom. The analysis defines “high exposure” as at least one standard deviation above its mean measure; it describes vacancies and task change, not the percentage of workers who will be replaced (OECD, 29 November 2024).

Choose training tied to real work

No single certificate or course fits every occupation. Select learning that you can apply to the tasks in your inventory and evaluate it against the criteria below. OECD work on training supply stresses relevance, flexibility, and inclusion rather than ranking particular providers (OECD, 11 December 2024).

Criterion What good training includes Questions before enrolling
Task relevance Examples, exercises, and policies from your sector or occupation Will I practice on the documents, data, or workflows I actually use?
Safe and critical use Privacy, security, bias, limitations, verification, and escalation—not only button-clicking Does it teach how to reject or correct an unsafe output?
Hands-on practice Current, approved tools with feedback on prompts and review methods Can I complete a supervised exercise and see why an answer is wrong?
Access and flexibility Affordable or funded participation, accessible formats, and scheduling that fits shifts or caring duties Are materials usable with my assistive technology and available when I can study?
Employer recognition Protected learning time, funding, a pathway to apply the skill, or a recognized internal record Will my manager support practice and acknowledge the result?

Ask your employer whether it will fund the training or provide paid time. If formal learning is unavailable, assemble a small portfolio of safe, documented improvements: a before-and-after workflow, the checks you performed, and the limits you found. Do not include confidential work product.

Protect job quality, privacy, and worker rights

Preparation is not only an individual obligation. OECD reporting on workplace AI records worker concerns about work intensity and the collection and use of data (OECD, 15 March 2024). Before a new system becomes part of your routine, seek clear answers about monitoring, performance measurement, retention, access, and appeal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • What worker data does the system collect, for what purpose, and for how long?
  • Can automated recommendations affect scheduling, pay, evaluation, promotion, or discipline?
  • Is a qualified person required to review those recommendations?
  • How can you challenge an incorrect output or decision?
  • How will targets change if AI is expected to increase throughput?

Discuss these issues collectively where possible. The OECD Recommendation of the Council on Artificial Intelligence says governments “should empower people to effectively use and interact with AI systems across the breadth of applications, including by equipping them with the necessary skills” (OECD Recommendation, revised 3 May 2024). In practice, that principle supports transparent training, meaningful human oversight, and a voice for workers when systems are introduced.

A practical 30–60–90-day preparation plan

Days 1–30: understand your baseline

  • Complete the task inventory and rank duties by frequency, error cost, and likely AI assistance.
  • Read your employer’s AI, privacy, security, and records policies.
  • Ask which tools are approved and who reviews their output.
  • Choose one low-risk task for supervised practice.

Days 31–60: practice and verify

  • Take a short, role-relevant lesson covering safe use and critical assessment.
  • Run the same task with and without assistance; compare time, quality, omissions, and rework.
  • Use independent checks for facts, calculations, sources, bias, and tone.
  • Record failures and questions rather than quietly working around them.

Days 61–90: make the change visible and sustainable

  • Share evidence with your manager or team: what improved, what did not, and what review remains necessary.
  • Propose a documented workflow with human sign-off and a fallback process.
  • Request further training, accessibility support, or protected learning time based on specific gaps.
  • Update your résumé or professional record with outcomes and verification skills, without disclosing confidential information.
  • Schedule a policy and skill review because tools, risks, and job expectations will continue to change.

What success looks like

You are better prepared when you can explain which parts of your role AI may assist, which must remain under human responsibility, and what evidence you use to check a result. You should be able to use an approved tool without exposing protected data, recognize a plausible but unsupported answer, communicate limitations to colleagues or customers, and show how your work improved without sacrificing accuracy or fairness.

AI adoption will not produce one universal outcome. The ILO’s global estimate, OECD’s cross-country studies, and workplace surveys describe broad patterns, not an individual employment forecast. One OECD survey found four in five workers said AI improved their performance and three in five said it increased enjoyment of work; those are reported experiences, not proof of a causal effect for every job (OECD, 15 March 2024). Use the evidence to ask precise questions, build relevant capability, and insist on accountable implementation rather than waiting for a definitive prediction about your job.
