Usually, they cannot assign sex to a single fossil with confidence. Researchers look for rare direct reproductive clues, or compare many specimens to estimate whether a population had sex-related differences. Those approaches answer different questions: a population-level pattern does not reveal whether a particular unsexed fossil was male or female.
What can identify the sex of an individual fossil?
Direct reproductive evidence in dinosaurs
For dinosaurs, one of the strongest clues is eggs preserved inside the lower body in a position consistent with reproduction. Eggs elsewhere, such as in the stomach, could instead be prey. The Natural History Museum explains that this evidence is rare, and dinosaur researcher Paul Barrett says, “It’s very rare to be able to sex a dinosaur definitively.” Natural History Museum: how to tell if a dinosaur was male or female.

The evidence reviewed there does not provide a definitive way to identify a male dinosaur. An individual fossil without a reproductive clue therefore usually cannot be assigned a sex with certainty.
Why medullary bone is not a sure answer
Medullary bone is a tissue associated with female birds preparing to lay eggs, where calcium is mobilized for eggshell production. Researchers have investigated similar tissue in dinosaur bones as a possible sign that an animal died near egg-laying. But its interpretation is unsettled: medullary-like tissue may also form under environmental stress. It should not be treated as an unambiguous sex marker. Natural History Museum.

How do researchers infer sexual dimorphism from a group?
Sexual dimorphism means average physical differences between sexes of the same species. To investigate it, researchers first need to decide whether the specimens belong to the same species and are at comparable growth stages. They can then compare measurable features such as body size, skull ornamentation, or skeletal robustness across the sample.
A difference between two fossils is not enough to establish dimorphism. It could reflect age, ordinary variation among individuals, differences between species, or an incomplete and unrepresentative sample. Fossil collections are often small, and growth can explain apparent differences that might otherwise be attributed to sex. Natural History Museum.

Estimating the size of a difference
Effect-size statistics can estimate how large a difference appears to be and express uncertainty around that estimate, rather than reducing the result to a simple significant-or-not-significant answer. A Field Museum account of research by Evan Saitta and colleagues reported that adult Maiasaura in the analyzed sample may have differed in size by about 45% between sexes. The analysis could not determine which sex was larger; the estimate is not a general figure for dinosaurs and cannot sex an individual fossil. Estimating dimorphism when no specimens have known sex
A 2021 paper by Sasaki and colleagues introduced a Bayesian posterior-density-peak method, or pdPeak, for estimating sexual dimorphism and within-sex variation together when fossil specimens lack known-sex labels. The paper notes that approaches that divide specimens around the sample mean can implicitly treat the larger half as one sex and the smaller half as the other. That assumption is most reasonable when the distributions overlap very little; with weaker dimorphism, conventional approaches can overestimate the difference.

pdPeak aims to improve those estimates and provide interval estimates, but it still relies on assumptions about the distributions. Its result describes possible variation in a population; it does not identify the sex of a named specimen. Sasaki et al., PNAS (2021).

Human bioarchaeologists may assess skeletal morphology and, when preservation allows, use molecular evidence. A 2020 Scientific Reports study compared skeletal assessments—based on multiple traits evaluated relative to the local population—with amelogenin-peptide proteomics and genomic DNA in archaeological human remains. An earlier DNA study also reported sex determinations for ancient human skeletons using a molecular genetic technique.

These studies demonstrate methods relevant to archaeological human remains, not a universal test for fossils. Whether molecular analysis is useful depends on the remains and their preservation; results from human bioarchaeology cannot simply be applied to dinosaurs or every extinct species. 2020 Scientific Reports study; ancient-human DNA study.

What can the evidence actually tell us?
- Individual assignment: Rare direct clues, such as appropriately positioned eggs in a dinosaur’s body, can support a sex assignment. Most fossils do not preserve such evidence.
- Population estimate: Comparisons and statistical models can assess whether a group may have had sex-related differences and how uncertain the estimate is.
- Not an individual label: A population-level estimate cannot tell researchers whether a particular unsexed fossil was male or female.
- No universal accuracy rate: The sources do not establish one percentage for how accurately researchers can sex fossils across species and preservation conditions.
