More drastic steps—such as reducing security ties or changing energy arrangements—remain options discussed by analysts, not verified Jordanian decisions in response to the latest escalation.
What outcome is Jordan seeking?
Jordan’s declared objective is a sovereign Palestinian state on the 4 June 1967 lines, with East Jerusalem as its capital. Its Ministry of Foreign Affairs describes diplomacy and international law as routes toward that outcome. Jordan’s response is therefore best understood as a set of tools intended to oppose annexation, settlement expansion, settler violence and displacement while keeping Palestinian self-determination on the international agenda—not as a single measure that can compel a change on the ground.

What diplomatic and legal steps can Jordan take?
Build a broader diplomatic coalition
Jordan can coordinate with Arab and Islamic partners, the European Union, the United States and the United Nations to raise the diplomatic cost of annexation or displacement and sustain pressure for a two-state outcome. Recent statements illustrate that approach: the 8 January 2026 Jordan–EU Summit Joint Statement opposed annexation and displacement; an eight-foreign-minister statement on 18 June 2026 addressed the situation; and an eight Arab-Islamic foreign ministers’ statement on 21 August 2026 rejected the E1 plan. These statements establish shared positions, not that the measures they opposed were halted.

Jordan can urge governments to meet their legal responsibilities and point to relevant Security Council resolutions and the International Court of Justice advisory opinion. On 8 February 2026, Jordan’s Foreign Ministry condemned Israeli measures aimed at imposing sovereignty and entrenching settlements in the occupied West Bank, cited Security Council Resolution 2334 and the ICJ advisory opinion, and called for international pressure to halt the escalation. Petra reported Foreign Ministry spokesperson Fouad Al-Majali saying, “Israel has no sovereignty over the occupied Palestinian territory.” Diplomatic and legal arguments can build pressure; a statement by itself does not compel compliance.

How can Jordan support Palestinians and protect Jerusalem’s holy sites?
Continue practical and diplomatic support
Jordan can maintain humanitarian, economic and institutional support for Palestinians alongside its advocacy for self-determination. Its official policy describes both material and diplomatic support, but the available sources do not give a current quantified breakdown of assistance to the West Bank. That means the scale or effect of any particular support measure should not be inferred from the policy statement alone.
Defend the holy-sites status quo
Jordan can raise its recognized Hashemite custodial role and oppose unilateral changes to Jerusalem’s holy sites. The Jordan–EU statement reaffirmed the status quo, and Jordan’s official policy page presents custodianship as part of its position. This role gives Jordan a distinct diplomatic concern to voice, while remaining part of—not a substitute for—the wider questions of Palestinian statehood and final status.

What are the risks of reducing bilateral or energy ties?
Analysts have discussed measures such as recalling ambassadors, reducing security cooperation or suspending a gas arrangement as possible pressure points. These are not confirmed Jordanian decisions in response to the latest escalation. The Congressional Research Service report on possible West Bank annexation is historical analysis; it does not establish current policy or the present status of an energy contract.

The trade-offs are significant. Reducing security cooperation could carry strategic consequences, while suspending the gas deal was discussed in the CRS report as a step that could bring financial penalties and higher energy costs. These costs make such measures different from diplomatic statements: they may be more consequential, but also expose Jordan to risks affecting its own security and economy. The cited sources do not quantify likely effects under current conditions.

How should Jordan weigh the available responses?
No cited source measures the current impact, domestic credibility, security consequences, economic cost or reversibility of each option. The comparison below is therefore a practical framing of the choices, not a forecast of outcomes.
| Option | Potential value | Main trade-off or limit |
|---|---|---|
| Coalition diplomacy | Keeps annexation, displacement, settler violence and E1 on regional and international agendas. | Joint statements show shared positions but do not prove that the measures opposed have stopped. |
| International legal and institutional pressure | Gives Jordan a basis to urge other governments to meet their legal responsibilities. | Invoking resolutions or an advisory opinion does not itself compel compliance. |
| Support for Palestinians | Pairs diplomatic advocacy with practical assistance and support for Palestinian self-determination. | Current West Bank assistance totals are not stated in the cited sources. |
| Protect Jerusalem’s holy-sites status quo | Lets Jordan raise its Hashemite custodial role in coordination with partners. | Addresses a distinct Jerusalem concern alongside, rather than in place of, Palestinian statehood and final-status questions. |
| Review diplomatic or security ties | Could signal stronger opposition than statements alone. | Analysts have discussed such steps, but they are not verified current decisions and could carry strategic costs. |
| Change energy arrangements | Could be considered as an economic pressure point. | The historical CRS analysis notes possible penalties and higher energy costs; it does not establish the arrangement’s current status or a Jordanian decision to suspend it. |
What is Jordan known to have decided?
The available sources document Jordanian statements, coalition diplomacy and its declared policy goals. They do not verify a current decision to suspend the peace treaty, end security coordination, cancel energy arrangements or enact economic measures in response to the latest escalation. King Abdullah II’s September 2026 address to the 81st UN General Assembly was indexed with the sentence, “Because the world’s political inaction is not for lack of options.” The address reinforces the call for action, but does not establish that Jordan has chosen one of the more escalatory measures.
