The free way to monitor a child’s phone is to use the parental controls built into it. On an iPhone or iPad, that means Apple Screen Time. On a supported Android device, that means Google Family Link. Both can limit screen time and restrict apps, and Family Link can show an Android device’s location under certain conditions. Neither tool is documented as a way to read a child’s messages, and what you can actually do depends on the child’s device, account, operating-system version, and settings.
Start with the child’s operating system
The platform decides which free tool you can use, so confirm that first. Apple and Google each manage their own devices, and the two systems do not overlap in a way that lets one free app supervise both.

Apple Screen Time on an iPhone or iPad
Screen Time is the built-in control set for iPhone and iPad. It manages how a child uses the device rather than what the child says or receives in conversation. Apple’s documentation supports app and category limits, communication limits, content and privacy restrictions, and safety features. It does not support a general claim that a parent can read a child’s messages, so do not set expectations on that basis.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsApple Family Sharing gives the organizer or a designated parent or guardian the ability to set these controls for children in the group. If a family does not have a parent Apple device or Family Sharing group, Apple’s support material describes a direct-device setup for children aged 13 to 17. Whether that path is available depends on country or region.

Setup steps
- On the child’s iPhone or iPad, open Settings and tap Screen Time. If you manage the child through Family Sharing instead, make the changes from the parent’s device in the Family group.
- Turn on the Screen Time passcode so the child cannot change limits without you.
- Set app limits for specific apps or app categories you want to restrict.
- Set communication limits for Phone, FaceTime, and Messages if you want to control who the child can contact.
- Set content and privacy restrictions for the areas you need, such as purchases or explicit content.
Menu labels and available options change with iOS and iPadOS releases, so check Apple’s current Screen Time and Family Sharing support pages if a screen does not match these steps.
Google Family Link on Android and Chromebook
Family Link is Google’s free supervision tool for Google Accounts that belong to children. Google says a parent can manage apps, set a bedtime or daily screen-time limit, check time spent in certain apps, and check the location of a child’s Android or compatible Fitbit device. Google’s setup requirements state the basic condition plainly: “To use Family Link to supervise your child’s device, the child needs to: Have a Google Account.”

Family Link does not supervise a child’s iPhone or iPad, even though the Family Link app can be installed on a supported iPhone or iPad to act as the parent’s app. For an iPhone-using child, the control path is Screen Time.
Setup steps
- Create the child’s Google Account, or use an existing one, and make sure it is supervised through Family Link.
- Install the Family Link app on the parent’s supported iPhone, iPad, or Android phone and sign in with the parent account.
- Open the child’s profile and set a daily limit and a weekly schedule. Limits apply to each Android device or Chromebook the child uses, so repeat the setting for each one.
- Block or allow individual apps. Some apps cannot be blocked because they are needed for supervision or for the device to work.
- Turn on location sharing only if you want the feature and have reviewed the privacy notice described below.
What free controls cannot do
Most problems with free monitoring come from expecting continuous or complete coverage. These are the limits to plan around:

- Location is conditional. On Android, Google says the child’s device location is visible in Family Link only while the device is powered on and connected to the internet. A phone that is off or offline will not show current location, so do not treat the feature as continuous tracking.
- App blocks can lag. A block set while a device is offline may not take effect until the device reconnects.
- Some apps stay available. Apps needed for supervision or core device function cannot be blocked on Family Link.
- Limits are per device. On Android, a daily limit applies to each device or Chromebook separately, so a child with two devices needs both configured.
- Platform gaps. Family Link does not cover iPhone or iPad, and Screen Time is not a message-reading tool.
- Versions change. Feature names, menu locations, and availability shift with operating-system releases and country, so verify against the current help pages before advising a family.
Privacy: read what the service collects
Family Link is not free of data handling. Google’s Family Link privacy disclosure says it may collect information about the apps, browsers, and devices a child uses to access Google services, details of service interactions, activity such as searches or watched videos depending on the settings, and location information. Read that notice before enabling supervision, and decide with the child’s age and privacy in mind which features you are comfortable turning on.
Apple’s controls are built into the device and Family Sharing, and its support material describes management of usage, communication, and restrictions rather than data collection for monitoring. Review Apple’s privacy documentation for the details that apply to your account.

Use the controls as a conversation, not a secret
The settings work best when the child knows what is turned on and why. Explaining the rules, and revisiting them as the child gets older, usually makes them easier to keep. This is practical advice rather than a requirement of either platform.

The Bottom Line
For an iPhone or iPad, start with Screen Time. For an eligible Android device or Chromebook, start with Google Family Link. Both are free and useful for limiting apps, screen time, and content, but neither gives you a full view of a child’s phone, and location in Family Link works only while the device is on and online.
