However, you may be able to sign in without the particular SMS code by using an authenticator-app code, an unused backup code, a security key, an approved login request, an existing logged-in session, or X’s official recovery process. A correct password alone does not replace two-factor authentication (2FA).
X’s current guidance (accessed August 18, 2026) does not offer a general “skip verification” control. Use only x.com and help.x.com; services claiming to remove 2FA are commonly phishing or fraud.
First identify which code X is requesting
“Verification code” can describe several different checks. The correct recovery path depends on the prompt you see.
| Prompt or situation | What it usually means | Legitimate next step |
|---|---|---|
| Six-digit text message | SMS-based 2FA | Check service and blocked messages, wait, or choose another configured 2FA method. |
| Code from an authenticator app | Time-based app 2FA | Open the linked app and enter its current code. |
| Backup-code prompt | Recovery code generated when 2FA was enabled | Enter an unused active backup code. |
| Security-key prompt | Hardware key or passkey 2FA | Insert, tap, or otherwise approve with the registered key. |
| Login-request approval | Approval inside an existing X session | Approve only a request you personally initiated. |
| Password-reset email or SMS | Password recovery, not necessarily 2FA | Reset the password, then complete any remaining 2FA challenge. |
| Locked-account notice, CAPTCHA, or unusual-activity warning | Account-lock or security verification | Follow the lock/unlock workflow rather than repeating 2FA attempts. |
| Unexpected login request or codes you did not request | Possible takeover attempt | Deny it, change the password from a trusted session, and use hacked-account support. |
X lists text message, authentication app, and security key as its principal 2FA methods. The login screen may offer wording such as Choose a different two-factor authentication method, although labels vary by device and interface. See X’s 2FA guide.

Fastest ways to sign in without the SMS code
1. Choose another configured 2FA method
- Open the official X app or go to x.com.
- Enter your username, email address, or phone number and password.
- At the verification screen, select Choose a different two-factor authentication method or similarly worded link, if it appears.
- Select an available authenticator app, security key, backup code, login approval, or other method and follow the on-screen instructions.
If no alternative is shown, that method may not be enabled on the account.
2. Enter an active backup code
At the 2FA prompt, choose the option to enter a backup code and submit one unused code. X says an account can have up to five active backup codes. Codes are not temporary passwords; X says they should be used in the order generated, and using a newer code out of order can invalidate previously generated codes. A code may also be inactive, already used, mistyped, or unsuitable for a third-party client. Details are in X’s login-authentication troubleshooting.
After access is restored, immediately update your phone number, reconnect or verify the authenticator app, generate a fresh set of backup codes, review active sessions, and check connected applications.
3. Use the linked authenticator app
- Open the authenticator that was linked to X, such as Google Authenticator, Authy, Duo Mobile, or 1Password.
- Find the X/Twitter entry.
- Enter its current time-based code at the X prompt.
Replacing or reinstalling a phone does not automatically restore the X secret. The entry must have been transferred or restored from a backup. If it is missing, use a backup code, an existing session, or Support instead.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5C NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5C NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5C NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
4. Approve a login request from an existing session
On a phone, browser, X Pro session, or other device that is still signed in, open Settings and privacy → Security and account access → Security → Login Requests. Approve the request only if you initiated it. Login requests can appear inside the app even when no push notification arrived. An unexpected request may mean someone else has your password. X documents this behavior at its 2FA page and its login troubleshooting page.
5. Use a registered security key
When X asks for the key, insert or tap the registered hardware key or use its passkey approval. X allows a security key to be the sole 2FA method, so losing the only registered key can leave Support as the remaining route.
If the phone or number is unavailable
New phone, same number
Try SMS after confirming the number is active. If the authenticator was not transferred, use a backup code or an already logged-in device. Your carrier may be able to issue a replacement SIM or eSIM for a number you still control, but this is not guaranteed for a disconnected or recycled number.
New phone and new number
Use a backup code, authenticator, security key, or existing session. Once signed in, change the number and recovery email and create new backup codes. Without any remaining factor, submit the official 2FA account-access form.

Still signed in somewhere
An authenticated session is the most valuable recovery route. Use it to approve a login request or change the account’s security settings before signing out. If SMS 2FA is the only enabled method, X says removing the phone from Mobile settings automatically turns off that method. This is an owner action from an authenticated session, not a login-screen bypass.
When the SMS code is delayed or never arrives
- Wait at least two minutes before requesting another code, as X advises.
- Confirm cellular service or internet access and turn off airplane mode.
- Check whether messages from X’s short code or sender are blocked.
- If relevant to your carrier and region, unblock messages from 40404; X notes that this short-code guidance is not universal worldwide.
- Consider whether a recent carrier or number change is delaying delivery.
- Try requesting the code again from x.com, preferably in an up-to-date browser.
- Select an authenticator, backup-code, security-key, or login-request option if available.
- If the real problem is a forgotten password, use the password-reset route rather than treating a reset code as a 2FA code.
If delivery still fails, use the appropriate X Support form. See login-authentication guidance and X’s phone-number FAQs.
Changing or disabling 2FA from an active session
Do this only after you are authenticated, and first add a current email address, phone number, and backup method.
Desktop
- Open X and select More.
- Choose Settings and privacy.
- Choose Security and account access, then Security.
- Open Two-factor authentication.
- Uncheck the enabled method and confirm, or configure another method.
iOS or Android
- Open Settings and privacy.
- Select Security and account access → Security → Two-factor authentication.
- Turn off the selected method or add another one, then confirm.
Labels and layout can differ across app versions, platforms, and regions. X’s instructions are at https://help.x.com/en/managing-your-account/two-factor-authentication.

Using a third-party app or client
You may be able to use X itself but fail in another application. X says backup codes work with x.com, mobile.x.com, X’s mobile apps, and other X clients, while some third-party applications require a temporary password instead. Temporary passwords expire after one hour and are not normally needed for the official iOS app, Android app, or mobile.x.com.
- Sign in to X through the official app or desktop site.
- Go to Settings and privacy → Security and account access → Security → Two-factor authentication.
- Open Temporary password under additional methods.
- Generate it and use it promptly in the third-party client.
If you forgot the password
- Open X’s password-reset form and try the username, associated email address, or associated phone number.
- Check every relevant inbox, including spam and junk folders.
- If a phone is associated, X may send a reset code by SMS.
- After resetting, complete any remaining 2FA challenge; a password reset does not automatically remove 2FA.
X says recovery options are limited without access to the account’s email address or phone number, although knowing the username may help with login support. Use X’s password-reset guidance and general login support.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If the account is locked, restricted, or hacked
Locked or restricted
Messages such as “Your account has been locked,” a CAPTCHA, an unusual-activity warning, or a request to verify by phone, email, or call indicate a separate account-lock workflow. Follow X’s locked and limited account instructions. If you cannot access the associated contact method, Support is the documented route.
Possible compromise
Escalate rather than repeatedly requesting codes if your password stopped working, your recovery email or phone changed, you receive unrequested reset messages, unfamiliar login requests appear, or the account is posting without permission. Deny unknown requests, change the password from a trusted session, review sessions and connected apps, and use X’s login-support workflow or account-recovery guidance.

When no recovery factor remains
If you have no phone, email access, backup code, authenticator, security key, or logged-in device, there is no reliable technical shortcut. Submit the 2FA problem form, provide the username and an accessible contact address, and describe the lost method accurately. Do not send a password, one-time code, backup code, or security-key approval. X warns that its browser form may not work in an unsupported browser; try an updated browser, private browsing, another device, or the general Help Center. X may still be unable to verify ownership, as explained at its recovery page.
Do not use VPNs, cookies, cached passwords, old app versions, paid SMS numbers, or “recovery” services as bypasses. X’s security guidance recommends checking that you are on X.com and avoiding phishing pages. Never disclose credentials or codes to anyone claiming they can unlock the account.
Preventing the next lockout
- Enable at least two 2FA methods where your account and devices support it.
- Generate backup codes and store them securely, separate from the phone.
- Keep the recovery email and phone number current.
- Transfer or back up the authenticator secret before replacing a device.
- Consider a registered security key and a safely stored spare for high-value accounts.
- Review active sessions and connected apps after any recovery.
- Use a password manager for the password; storing TOTP credentials in one has convenience benefits but also concentrates risk.
For future protection, an authenticator app such as Google Authenticator, a password-management platform such as 1Password, or a hardware key from Yubico or Google Titan may help. These tools do not recover an X secret that was never backed up, and hardware keys require registration and safe storage.
Quick Recap
