How Camera Traps Help Researchers Monitor Rare and Elusive Wild Cats

Camera traps let researchers document rare cats without needing to see them in person. Repeated, dated photographs can establish where and when a species appears; when coat patterns distinguish individuals, those records can also support estimates of abundance, density, survival, recruitment, and population trends. A photograph is a detection, not automatically a count of the population: estimates depend on camera placement, survey effort, reliable identification, and an appropriate statistical model.

What camera traps reveal about elusive cats

A camera trap is a remotely triggered camera that records an animal passing its field of view. Researchers can place infrared cameras along likely travel routes or at features such as scent-marked rocks and scrapes, then review the resulting images instead of relying on direct sightings. In a snow leopard study in Hemis National Park, cameras were placed along active travel routes and at scent-marked locations within sampling grids. Jackson et al. (2006)

Even when images cannot identify individuals, they can document a species’ presence, the timing of detections, and activity at monitored sites. These observations are useful, but a camera’s image count or detection rate should not be described as the number of animals in a population.

How photographs become population estimates

Match individuals from visible markings

For cats with distinctive, repeatable coat patterns, researchers may compare photographs to determine whether records show the same animal. Each confirmed animal’s detections across cameras and survey occasions form an encounter history. This is the basis for capture–recapture analysis: the model uses how often animals are first photographed and photographed again to estimate animals that were present but not detected.

Camera-trap research has applied this approach to both tigers and snow leopards. A nine-year tiger study recorded 74 individual tigers over 5,725 trap-nights and used a robust-design capture–recapture framework to model time-specific abundance, density, survival, recruitment, temporary emigration, and transience. Those figures describe that study, not a standard result for other surveys. Karanth et al. (2002)

Use locations to estimate density

Spatial capture–recapture (SCR) models use both individual encounter histories and the locations where animals were detected. By accounting for how detection changes with distance from an animal’s activity area, SCR can estimate density rather than only the number of identified animals in a study area. Its reliability depends on a well-designed camera array and sufficient detections. A review of camera-trap and SCR methods for wild felids discusses sampling variables and design thresholds relevant to precise density estimates. Mammal Review (2023)

What published studies illustrate

Study Reported result What it means
Snow leopards, Hemis National Park, 2003–2004 66 captures and 8.91 individuals per 100 trap-nights in 2003; 49 captures and 5.63 individuals per 100 trap-nights in 2004. These are study-specific capture and rate figures, not a general expected detection rate or a direct population count. Jackson et al. (2006)
Tigers, nine-year study 74 individually identified tigers over 5,725 trap-nights. Repeated photographic records supported robust-design capture–recapture analyses of population dynamics. Karanth et al. (2002)
European wildcats, 60-day survey 105 photographs, 98 suitable for individual identification. A multiple-mark SCR model used uncertain left- and right-flank records, addressing the difficulty of matching cats photographed from only one side. Maronde et al. (2020)

Why camera placement and survey design matter

There is no universally best camera placement in the studies available. Trails may intercept animal movement efficiently, while cameras away from trails may sample other parts of the landscape. A 2026 Bhutan study directly compares trail-based and random placement for felid density estimation; the appropriate choice depends on the study objective, species, and terrain. Dorji et al. (2026)

For SCR, camera locations need to form a spatial array suited to the area and animal movement being studied. A snow leopard study in Pakistan found density estimates sensitive to camera-array configuration, while difficult terrain and limited access can constrain where cameras can be placed. • Match placement to the target cat: travel paths and scent-marking sites were used in the Hemis snow leopard study, but behavior and habitat differ among species.
  • Plan adequate spatial coverage: a camera array must support the intended analysis, especially when estimating density.
  • Allow enough time and effort: rare cats may generate too few independent detections for precise estimates. Adding cameras alone does not guarantee accuracy; spacing, duration, placement, and analysis work together.
  • Seek usable identification views: image angle and quality affect whether an individual can be matched across records.

How identification errors can distort estimates

Misidentification can push estimates in either direction. Treating one animal as several creates false individuals and can inflate abundance; mistakenly merging distinct animals can bias estimates downward. In a controlled experiment with 16 captive snow leopards and eight observers, Johansson and colleagues found that 12.5% of capture occasions were misclassified and that estimated abundance was inflated by a mean of 35% (standard deviation 21%) in that experiment. This result demonstrates a possible source of bias; it is not a universal correction factor for other species, observers, or camera surveys. Johansson et al. (2020)

One-sided photographs create another matching problem. European wildcat flank patterns may not be matchable across left- and right-side images. The multiple-mark model used in the wildcat study incorporated uncertain records, but doing so requires suitable data and analysis rather than simply counting unmatched photographs as new animals.

What a camera-trap result can—and cannot—establish

  • Presence: a verified photograph shows that the species was at the camera location at the recorded time.
  • Individual occurrence: distinctive markings may allow researchers to recognize a known animal in repeat images.
  • Abundance or density: these require adequate sampling, credible individual matching where the model depends on it, and an appropriate capture–recapture or SCR analysis.
  • Population change: repeated, comparable surveys can support trend analysis, but differences in effort, detection probability, or design can complicate comparisons.

Camera traps are therefore monitoring tools, not automatic population counters. Their strongest contribution is a repeatable record of otherwise hard-to-observe animals that can be turned into defensible estimates when the images, deployment design, and analysis support that inference.
